Outline and transcript

0:00 Introduction and the Rapture

Well, good morning, everyone. I was talking to a guy, when I ran this salt company in Willoughby, Ohio, and we were having the small little place painted. And he was painting away and so I was talking to him and, I really appreciated what he had, you know, what he was doing. And we started talking about, what was going to take place in the future and it turns out that he believed that we are going to go through the tribulation, the Christians. That's classically called post tribulationalism.

And can you imagine that? I mean, that's what some guys actually believe. They believe in post tribulational. That the rapture is gonna take place after the seven years of tribulation. And I was a relatively new believer, maybe three or four years of married and and in full time Christian work, but I didn't know how to answer.

I knew he was wrong, but I didn't know quite how to answer him. I didn't know what to say about the timing of this thing called the rapture of the church. It's an interesting thing. So I don't know. Don put this up?

You did? Perhaps today. And you'll get to know you'll get to know by the end of this little time where I think the Bible stands with regard to this. Can we know, can we honestly know when the rapture is going to take place? Now, I'm not talking about a date.

I'm not talking about, you know, 07/06/1950, you know, '19 or 2024. No. No. I'm not talking about that at all. That's called heresy, and we're not into that.

And am I? So something is happening here. And this, okay. Now I got to put the glasses back on because I'm old. I'm really, really old.

And I can't see anything without this. Okay, slideshow. Okay, so play from the start. Bingo. Okay, you all see that?

2:30 Preparation and Recommended Books

I've done some homework and actually did preparation for this. And I think you'll find you'll find it interesting. I want to, right off the bat, want you to secure for yourself some books. The Bible is the final authority. No questions about it.

But I want you to secure for yourself some books that I think will... If you're wearing socks, they'll get blessed right off. They'll bless your socks right off. And the first one I'd like to recommend, years ago, a man who went to Dallas Theological Seminary and did his THD. In those days, they call it a THD.

Now they call it a PhD. But they... His name was J. Dwight Pentecost, he wrote his doctoral dissertation, a doctoral dissertation on things to come. That's what he titled it.

And it's a it's a landmark book that's been around since 1957 approximately. And it's a great book. I wanna introduce you to, however, to the update of that. Not by J. Dwight Pentecost because he passed away in 2017, but by a guy named Mark Hickok Hitchcock.

Mark Hitchcock, teaches at Dallas, he is also a pastor at a church. And he teaches at Dallas, got his PhD. He got a PhD now from Dallas Seminary. So this supplants the book Things to Come because it's really updated. It's really updated.

He deals with... It's called the end, a complete overview of biblical proph... Or bible prophecy and the end of days. Outstanding book. Outstanding book.

My recommendation, if you were to only get one book out of the ones I recommend, this would be it. This would be the book. This would be excellent. Another book that I recommend, there's a, I've got a few books. Next one is a book by Charles Ryrie, who's with the Lord now, taught at Dallas again, called Dispensationalism.

And this is the last and updated book that he did, and Moody Press publishes it. It's outstanding. He goes after progressive dispensationalists in this book, and he shows why that is not accurate. And we can we can talk about that later. Another book published by a name you can trust, Moody Press, is called Evidences Evidence for the Rapture.

And, this is an anthology or this is a few few guys wrote on this. And one of my professors wrote on this, Glenn Crider. And outstanding outstanding book. This is tremendous. And then a book I had him as a professor at Moody.

His name is Reynold Showers and he says, he's with the lord. There is... There really is a difference. And this is talking about a comparison between covenant theology and dispensational theology. And this is outstanding.

This is a great book. We require this at Tepsy for our students that come to Tepsy. They have to read this book. And then there's some other books that they're gonna have to read. This book is very simple, very thin, but yet super profound.

And it's really going to be talking about what we're going to talk about today. And it's called The Falling Away. The falling away, spiritual departure or physical rapture. A second look at second Thessalonians chapter two verse three. That's all he deals with.

He deals with this and his name, he teaches at Dallas again and, actually he doesn't. He teaches at Chafer Theological Seminary. And, he graduated from Dallas and his name is doctor Andy Wood. Outstanding. And doctor Wood is in this book as well.

Talking about the day of the lord, etcetera. So there's so much to talk about. There's so much to talk about. I wanna confine our conversation to possibly three areas of scripture. Three actual areas and those areas will probably be first Corinthians 15 and then first Thessalonians four and then second Thessalonians chapter chapter two verse three.

Okey doke. That's where we're gonna... That's where we're headed. This is more, lecturer ish type type stuff. I got a PowerPoint for this.

7:51 The Importance of Hermeneutics

I've already shown this to you, but you maybe just went into a coma. I don't know. But, I'm gonna just show you some differences, some differences that are there and my, this is titled what will happen and what's the Bible say about our future, etcetera but you have to have hermeneutical considerations. Hermeneutics is simply the art and science of biblical interpretation. How do you approach the Bible?

And so there's really and when we discuss this and this is why this book there is a really a difference. It's so good because progressive dispensationalist and this book, Dispensational is how you come to, how you come to a lot. Okay. So, if you believe in law and grace, if you believe in law and grace, you're a dispensationalist. You say, well, what does that mean?

And the Bible uses the word dispensational, dispensation. It means that how a period of time in which god dealt with dealt with the group of people at a certain time and had certain qualifications within it. But if you say that god dealt with the Jews during the Old Testament time differently now than he deals with the church, the Christians, you're a dispensationalist. I had a professor. The guy was brilliant.

The guy was brilliant and his name was Doctor Robert Goddard. He was in hermeneutics and we're, I was taking hermeneutics from him. He said, he was from Oklahoma. He goes, my brothers, I just gotta tell you, if you believe in law and grace, you believe in there's a difference between law and grace, you're a dispensationalist and so, I I I believe that there are seven dispensations and I'm not going to go into dispensational theology but there are considerations that we need to do and to look at. When you look at the literal historical grammatical hermeneutic, That's the only legitimate hermeneutic, and we're gonna define that.

It's the only one that's legitimate. And what I mean by that versus the allegorical hermeneutic, and I'll show you why. When we talk about literal, you're giving the language its normal natural usage. You you... It's...

It says what it says. You give it, you define it, unless you find out that it is a metaphor, then you treat it like a metaphor or a simile. If you see like or as in there, you treat it like a simile. Okay. So you look at this, the literal, you treat it normal natural usage.

In fact, when we talk about this, we say the normal normal hermeneutic is this, the literal literal hermeneutic and then the historical, meaning you give the understanding of the history, the history of the book and its passage. That is so important. Who's he writing to? Why is he writing to him? Etcetera.

And then you have here the next one is the grammatical understanding word meetings and their relationship. Now, that's really important. Write this down if you're taking notes. Context is king. Put king big.

Context is king because you can have a word throughout the Bible but only the context is going to give you how it's used. How that word is used? It doesn't mean always the same thing. It's always, it's going to be different And so context is king. So understanding the word meanings and their relation to each other in context and grammatical significance of the text studied.

And then with the literal historic... That's the only legitimate one by the way. I'm sorry. You go, oh, I tell you right now, mine is better. Well, there's only really two...

There's a whole bunch of different ways of doing this. Right? But the only legitimate way is a literal historical grammatical hermeneutic, or what they call the normal normal hermeneutic. Okey doke. There are rules with the literal historical grammatical hermeneutic.

There are rules in proper interpretation. I just can't say, well, look at this. Wow. Jesus rose from the dead. It's a yellow dump truck.

You go, how did you get that? And then, oh, I got books. I got books at home that people say, something is ludicrous as that. As crazy as that. How did you get there?

And so, hermeneutics is the art and science, art and science of biblical interpretation. You have rules on this. A guy in China, well, we always use China but a guy somewhere else, Irian Jaya, who with the Bible can come to the same conclusions if he employs or she employs the literal historical grammatical hermeneutic. The Bible only knows one interpretation. There are many applications but there's only one interpretation.

Well, that's up to you. That's what you say. No, it's not what I say. It's what the language says. It's what the context says.

It's what the rules of grammar say. This is the... This is very important for us. So with the literal, historical, grammatical, there are rules. With the allegorical method, there are no rules.

You make this stuff up. You look at some of these guys and you say, man, how did you get there? And they can't tell you. You know why? Because they made it up.

14:33 Distinguishing the Church from Israel

The church is not Israel. If you apply, this is where you really have to do your homework. Study to show yourself approved unto god. Workmen that need not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. This is critical for us in understanding the word of god.

It really is. It's critical. Why? Reasons why the church is not Israel. First of all, evidence that the church did not exist in the Old Testament but started in the day of Pentecost.

Okay, Acts chapter two. The Old Testament does not know of the church age. Does not know it. Okey doke does not know it. Why is that?

Because the church was not formed apart from the baptism of the holy spirit and this as the spirit baptism did not take place until Pentecost and that the body of Christ equals the church and those are the verses there for you. Colossians one eighteen and verse 24 and we are baptized right here twelve three thirteen baptized or placed into the body of Christ. It's a new work and then we're going to see him even further. So, I hope jot those verses down and look those babies up. Okey doke.

We don't have the time to go through each and everyone. Peter's declaration that there is a beginning to a new work of god and this is where he was, you know, god really worked with him. He's on the roof at Simon the Tanners. He comes down, guy knocks on the door, he goes and talks, and the holy spirit fell on him as in the beginning. We see this in chapter 11 because the Jews were saying, what happened?

What happened here? This is, well, at the beginning and that word is not the beginning of creation. This is the beginning of the church. When did that take place? Acts chapter two and then you have you have here Paul's teaching calling the church a mystery and we're going to get into that a little bit.

The word mystery and this is a precursor to my comments on first Corinthians fifteen fifty one and following but a mystery is used 22 times 22 times and the word mysteries is used five times. So, total 27 times and it has the exact same meaning and what does it mean? The word mystery means literally our literal uses it to mean the secret thoughts and plans and dispensations of god which were hidden from the human reason as well as from all other divine, all other comprehension below the divine level. Hence, must be revealed to those to whom or for whom they were intended. In other words, they didn't know.

And they couldn't find out. God had not revealed it yet. When you look at first or when you look at Ephesians chapter two verse 11 through thirteen fifteen, I think it is, three fifteen. You in Ephesians chapter two eleven, I think it's three fifteen. When you look at that section, you find this word mystery used, I think, three or four times out of the 27.

It's a mystery. And we're going to find this out more when we get to first Cor 15. He's going to use the word, behold I show you a mystery. We shall not all sleep. Why?

Because it revealed it's from something that was hidden but Ephesians chapter two, it says, it actually Ephesians chapter three verse two talks about how it was not revealed in ages past but now is revealed to us. And what was that mystery? The church. The church is the mystery. Okay.

So, didn't start until the old testament. It did not exist in the old testament. Started the day of Pentecost. Church could not start until the death of Christ. The feeding this is this is that passage.

He had to have died. The Messiah would have to die before the church would ever come into existence. I will or shall build my church. I shall. Notice the verb tense on that.

I shall build. Okay. So, and then also, again, in Ephesians two, the church could not start without the foundation of the apostles and prophets. The prophets are not Old Testament prophets. These prophets are New Testament prophets.

And then the church could not start without Jesus's promise to build it. In the future, not previously built. The old in the Old Testament is asserted by covenant theology. Covenant theology says, well, it started with Abraham. The church, god's done with the Jews.

God's going to god's finished with the Jews. He's going to do it. It's called replacement theology and so what happens is they they god is going to start working with the church in in the Old Testament. Nah. Ephesians blowing that out the door.

Blowing that out the door. That's for sure. Jesus said, I will build my church. The verb tenses on this is just staggering. It hasn't happened yet at at that time.

When Jesus said it, the church could not start until the ascension of Christ and then there are other reasons why Israel and the church are not the same entity. Let me just say this, jot this down if you like. It's not hard to take notes on this stuff. I got a PowerPoint. I mean, can you believe this?

This is like miraculous. Notice this, if you make one distinction between Israel and the church, they are not the same entity. Period. If you make a distinction between the church and Israel, just one. They're not the same entity.

They're not the same group. Okay, let's talk about that. If I can... Okay. Four fifths of the Bible talks about Israel.

One fifth talks about the church. There's a distinction for you. Israel is physical. The church is spiritual You know, it's so so amazing to me. The nation of Israel Tell them they're the church.

I don't think so. And then you have here a slow clicker. Israel is one. The church is from many nations. It's interesting, isn't it?

German Jew, American Jew, Italian Jew, whatever country they're from, Jew, right? I met a a believer yesterday or two days ago who is is grandparents were Jewish, his parents were Jewish, he's Jewish, right? Now, he's a believer and that's that's fantastic. Two became the two became one. Ephesians chapter two tells us this, they became one new man.

He's now my brother in Christ. Many nations from all over the world, all over the place. This is why we have, this is why we go into all the world and preach the gospel. Anybody can come into it. Anybody can be a Christian who comes to Christ.

Israel, their form of worship, it was inward. They went to the temple in Jerusalem. What is the church? Outward, going to all the world and preach the gospel. And that's what we're we're we're we're to do and then he said, the priesthood, they had one.

Israel had a priesthood. No longer in existence. Actually, no longer in existence. The believers, the Christians, we are a priesthood. Our brother got up this morning and talked about that very thing.

We are a priesthood. So, we don't become one. You don't have to be a guy, the tribe of Levi. Now, you can go directly but to the throne of god because now you are a believer priest. A believer priest.

That's huge. That is ginormous. And then you have here their god is Jehovah god. Our god is the father. Our god is the father.

They were looking for Messiah. We have him. Savior, bridegroom, the head of the body. This is a this is huge. The Holy Spirit was with them.

But get this, the Holy Spirit is in them. In the church, in you. Can you imagine that? The Holy Spirit is not with you. The Holy Spirit is in you.

In in that case, he's with you But he is in you, totally in you. And then they had the mosaic law. The mosaic law were the governing principles, if you please, of Israel. What is for the church? You look at Romans, it's grace.

The governing principle for us is the grace of god and then also, they were called Israel is called the unfaithful wife yet to be restored and will be restored. Will be restored. The bride of the lord Jesus Christ. That is the church. Different.

Big time different. You make one distinction. You've got it. You make one distinction. You got it.

25:29 The Seventieth Week of Daniel

This is a a nice chart. I like it. I think it's pretty accurate, and I want you to notice something here. I've got two of these because I made a big blunder in my... See what I mean?

I did it twice. Okay. So this is the seventieth week of Daniel, and that is a great prophecy, and that's for another time. We're going to be looking at at this issue, the rapture. We're gonna be looking at the rapture.

And I'd like us to look at these passages that I aforementioned. That sounds pretty lawyerly, doesn't it? If all mentioned, yes, we're going to look at them. A forementioned and the first one I'd like us to look at is first Thessalonians. First Thessalonians chapter four.

26:32 First Thessalonians and the Rapture

People were lying to them signing Paul's name to it, writing letters, saying you're going through the tribulation. He says, no way. Here's what's going to take place. Here's what's going to happen. He says in verse 17, then they, we who are alive and remain unto remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds.

Those who are died in Christ will be boomed, taken up, caught up together. This is Harpazo in the Greek. Harpazo. It means to be snatched away with violence. The Latin vulgate, I don't know if you caught this last time but the Latin vulgate translates this rap repeal or something like that where we get the word rapture.

And that was I think in the Jerome era fourth century type of thing. I think that's what the timing of that and so caught up, rapture, boom, taken away and and we look at that and we say, that is really something because notice, I want you to notice this word rapture. Okay, I gotta go through this. This is the tribulation period which I really I don't... We're not gonna be here for that.

That's for sure, and I'll tell you why in a minute. But I wanna show you something that is there are six historical biblical raptures. Can you admit that have already happened? I don't know if you realize that there are six historical biblical raptures. And this is from Mark Hick...

Hickok's book, the complete over... Complete overview of the Bible, regarding historical regarding prophecy in the end of days. Six historical and then one more to come is the rapture of the church. So can you can you just... Can you give me what the six historical raptures were?

What do you think? Enoch. Okay. So, yes. Enoch, the rapture of Enoch.

What else? What is it? Elijah. Right. This word hapazo means to be taken up.

Actually, it's a it's a physical, it's a physical thing. It's a physical, they leave physically. It's not it's not a, you know, it's geographical. Physical geographics. It's not like, oh, I was...

I just had this vision. No. No. No. No.

No. And so... And then the rapture of Isaiah, he was high and lifted up. Isaiah six. Right?

And then you have the rapture of Jesus in Revelation 12. Twelve five, the meaning harpazo, meaning to be snatched away is used to describe the ascension of Jesus to the earth, to heaven from the earth. Ain't that amazing? And then you have the rapture of Philip, but I call that a horizontal rapture. He went and ministered to Philip, then he was gone.

And the Greek word there, he was caught away. It says caught away, harpazo. And it was the same word as we see here in first first Thessalonians chapter four. And then the rapture of Paul. And that's why my my brother, I was telling...

Gonna tell my brother, where where is he sitting? Sitting? That that the the... He was caught away. He was literally taken into the presence of heaven.

Literally taken in the presence of heaven. Okay? So this is the rapture of Paul. And then we have here, we'll go back to our our little thing here, rapture right here, that's to come. That is going to come and I like us to look at the passage that will really tell us this in first Corinthians 15.

30:51 A Mystery Revealed

In a moment, in a moment, this is the imminent return. See, when Jesus Christ comes at the end of the tribulation, every eye will see him. Every eye will see him but when you talk in this verse, that's not talking about this. It's talking about the rapture of the church. In a moment, in a twinkling of a as a twinkling of an eye.

In other words, what that means is this, it's so fast. You take a moment. The Greek word for that is atomos, atomos, atomos, yeah, atomos. And it means you cannot divide the time. It's uncut.

It's faster than a nanosecond. And then and he uses an illustration of the twinkling of an eye, the the ray of a sun just reflecting off the eye, the twinkle. It's boom. That fast. It's going to happen.

Boom. That's it. It's called the imminent return of Jesus Christ. You don't have the imminent return of Jesus Christ here at the end. You don't have this and guys get all choked up about about the last Trump aspect.

That's why the post trippers saved all the tribute, the rapture is at the end but they got major league problems. They got major league problems. If the rapture of the church comes at the end of the tribulation, post tribulation. They have a problem because what happens is you go into the kingdom. You've got the kingdom.

You have a seventy five day gap. Daniel chapter 12 at the end. A seventy five day gap in which they they have a three judgments, three to four judgments that take place and then Jesus is going to be on the throne of David. Okay, literally on the throne of David and so what happens is if if he if they're raptured here, they meet the lord midway and come back down in glorified bodies. The big the big issue is, who's gonna populate the millennial kingdom?

Because the Bible tells us in Isaiah 65 that the millennial kingdom will be populated. They will have children. People will go in and they will have children But guess what? If it come... If they're all going through the tribulation and then they get raptured at the end and they come back not as regular like you you know, humans.

I mean, they come back as human beings, of course. But the able to procreate, no. Nobody can populate the the millennial kingdom. How do they populate? If they can't, if they're just, you know, like angels.

They can't. And so they got a major league problem. It's just in that. There's other problems they got. No questions about it.

Like me, I got a lot of problems. But you look at that and so and he tells us a mystery, behold, I show you mystery, we shall not all sleep but we shall all be changed in a moment the twinkling of an eye at the last trump and the trump shall sound and the dead shall be raised incorruptible and shall be we shall we shall be changed. Okay, this is this is what we're going to do. This is what's going to take place. Now, this is this is I've I've left the best for last, okay?

34:45 Second Thessalonians and the Falling Away

They thought, we're in the tribulation. Paul goes, wait a second, no way. You in this world experience tribulation and Jesus said that but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world. That's not what we're talking about. We're talking about that seven year period.

Right? From here, when he signs the when the antichrist signs the covenant, and you have a seven year period. 21 judgments or 19 actually because they telescope right in one to another. Okay? And so what you have here is in second Thessalonians, he says, now I beseech you.

Notice how many times he talks about the rapture in this chapter alone. Now, we beseech you brethren by the coming of our lord Jesus Christ. Ping. And by our gathering together unto him. First time, right?

That you'd be soon not shaken by my in mind or be troubled neither by spirit nor by word nor by letter as from us as the day of the lord is present. Let no man, in other words, when is the day of the lord? When is that tribulation period going to take place? The day of the lord. When is that going to be?

He said, don't be troubled. Guys are writing to you and signing my name to it. I'm going to tell you right from me what the story is. Those guys are false. Here's the real story.

Notice what it says. Let no man deceive you by verse three here. Let no man deceive you by any means for the day of the lord shall not come except there come a falling away first and that man of sin be revealed. Unfortunate translation. Unfortunate translation from it's it's an interesting historical aspect.

From Jerome with way back from Jerome all the way until 1576 with the Reams Bible. They had this word falling away. It's apostasy in the Greek. Every translation translated it departing. But the reams because of the because of the reformation, they wanted to make sure that, well, these guys are departing from Catholicism.

So, we're going to translate it. They fell away. King James came back at it in 1611 and said, yeah, falling away from Protestantism. So, it was a political translation and it stuck. It stuck but that's not what what it is.

That's not what it says. It is a departing and so let's look at this just real briefly at this. It is a a a departing apostasia. The verb is used 17 times and out of the 17 times, 15 times is used departing. This is the noun.

It's used twice and it's used as departure. Departing. Context is king. This is important because he's talking about what has to take place first before the tribulation hits. What takes place first?

The church is gone. The church is raptured. This is bringing incredible comfort to these guys who were lied to. That's for sure and then he says, notice, the departure and that man of sin reveals sin be revealed the son of perdition who opposes and then goes into who this antichrist guy is and what's taking place for seven years and what is going to happen. So, this is this is and this book here by Andy Woods, outstanding book that talks about, he gives, I'm going to give you 10 reasons why this is that the way you should translate it this way.

10 reasons why you should translate it that way. And gives gives other guys too. I mean, there's a whole boatload of J Dwight Pentecost. I believe that very thing. It's just just an amazing, amazing, amazing thing.

So, we look at this, the rapture of the church, in fact, Bill McDonald in his commentary said it was falling away but then he put a footnote in. Look at this little footnote. I think it's number seven. He says, J Dwight Pentecost, he's... I'm almost quoting him.

J Dwight Pentecost translates this a departure of the church. He said this and and McDonald said, if that is true, it is an airtight, airtight, argument for the pre tribulational rapture of the church. All arguments are over. You can't say it's mid trib. You can't say it's partial.

You can't say it's three quarter. You can't say it's post. You can't say anything else but before the tribulation. Airtight. And I believe personally, I believe the more I study it, the more I look at this, that that's exactly what Paul had in mind.

The context is king, that's what he is telling him. He's saying, okay, here's what's taking place. You're thinking you're going through the tribulation. My dear brothers and sisters, you're not in the tribulation. Because the rapture has not taken place yet.

And Paul thought to himself as the the imminent return of Jesus Christ could happen at any moment. Doesn't mean at any moment doesn't mean it's going to happen now. It could happen now. But when it says imminent, it could happen at any time. That he chooses and that's up to it's up to him and so this is this is the thing.

We are going to be raptured and people say to my say, I've heard people say, well, you know that politician. He's the antichrist. This guy is the antichrist. When I ran the salt company long time ago after we had it painted, I saw a I saw a book and it had... Who's that?

Henry Kissinger on the cover of it with six six six across his across his forehead, you know, in the weird, you know, weirdness, you know. He's the antichrist and this guy and people are saying, Obama's the antichrist or... And Donald Trump's the antichrist for fair disclosure. Alright, this guy's in. We're not gonna know.

We will never know who the antichrist. Well, I maybe never. We're gonna be gone. We're gonna be up and what takes place up in heaven while this is going on, the judgment seat of Christ and the marriage supper of the lamb. That's what takes place during that time.

Both tribbers have a hard time when when you have the marriage supper of the lamb, when you have the judgment seat of Christ. With the pre trib tribulation or rapture, you can fit that in right here. And then they come with them. Boom. They come in with the saints.

43:01 The Return with Christ

I even took riding lessons when I was little. I could canter, but that was it. We're coming back. We are coming back with him and he is going to crush the rebellion. When he comes, we go.

Ain't this something? I tell you what, I like that. Perhaps today, this could happen. By the way, we could be in ten years, in less than ten years, we could be in this thing called the millennial kingdom or the thousand year reign, literal reign of Christ. A literal thousand years.

In less than ten years. And I just gotta tell you, you'll all be vegans. Sorry. I couldn't help it. You know, I just couldn't help it.

So we pray as John the Apostle prayed, even so come Lord Jesus. In Jesus name, amen.
