0:00 You are what you have been becoming
Greetings and salutations, whatever that means. Hi. Number of years ago, I heard a heard a saying, and I I pondered this saying for years. I mean, years. We're talking forty years.
And, I thought to myself, it... It's a really interesting type, saying. And, it was by a guy named doctor John Herman. And, he he said this. He said, you are what you have been becoming.
Ain't that a kicker? That's an interesting thing. It's a it's a... You know, you are what you have been becoming. And lot of thought on that one.
Lot of thought. So when you look at that, you say to yourself, okay. What... How does that affect me? What is that for me?
What is that like for me? Well, you are what you have been becoming. And, really, for us for us people, we are a work in progress. We really are. We're a work in progress.
And so I guess the subtitle of this could be, you know, how to glorify god through personal integrity and I like us to look at a a passage of scripture that really talks about this Philippians chapter two. Philippians chapter two. And when somebody talks about integrity, you have to you have the etymology of this is interesting. It got all these, you know, Latin from the middle French, you know, all this kind of stuff. Incorruptibility.
Let's see. A firm adherence to a code of especially moral or artistic values and corruptibility, an unimpaired condition, soundness, the quality or state of being complete, undivided completeness. Synonym for this would be honesty, true, true honesty. And, so this... That's that's definition of integrity.
So I wanna ask you a question. When we... Starting about this, you know, you are what you have been becoming. You know? What is what is your life?
What is your life? I mean, when when you look at your life and you say to yourself, is there integrity there? Is there soundness in there? Is that what you see is what you get with you? What what is it like?
And so Philippians chapter two, we'll talk about this. I hate this passage. It kills me. That's what it does. And you you have to you have to examine yourself.
You have to look at yourself because Paul shows us three ingredients we must have in our lives in our personal integrity. Okay. Well, what you see is what you get. Your word... My word is my bond.
Do you ever hear that one? And so you you look at this and... But what are these ingredients that we have to have to have true godly integrity? And let's look at Philippians chapter... We're gonna go through Philippians chapter two for the sake of time because I'm generally known as the late Chris Schroeder.
So we're gonna go through the passage. So please turn with me in your Bibles to... Or on your phones or on your iPad or you've memorized it, that's fine. But let let's look at it together. And Philippians chapter two, so this is this is by way of just a little bit of an introduction.
You have here Paul writing to the church at Philippi. You have Epaphroditus who was an elder of that assembly coming and bringing a gift to minister, a financial gift to minister to to Paul and he's writing this this epistle from prison. He's writing it from prison. And so he is he is, you know, it... Really you could say, the overall theme of this is the Christian experience.
But I wanna add a little bit to that overall theme of Philippians. Christian experience with joy, with tremendous joy. I had a friend of mine, and you'll probably hear this again sometime, but he said to us, I was listening to him preach and he he, you know, he had... He was a minister. He pre...
You know, he really took it on the chin. He was in the inner city in Week Wake Park and his name is Grover Wilcox. He's with the Lord now. And he's as white as you could possibly get. This guy was as white and he went to Week Wake Park, which is pretty...
It was pretty dark. Pretty black neighborhood like crazy. And twice, people broke into his home and tied him up and beat him within an inch of his life. I mean, he was hospitalized for for eons and he stayed at the church that he founded, Calvary Bible Church in Week Wake Park in Newark, New Jersey. He stayed at that church for forty five years.
He founded it and stayed there for forty five years. And it was just incredibly faithful. You know what he said? I heard him preach, and he was a good friend. We did open air together.
6:26 Rejoicers are not quitters
And so he was looking, rejoicers aren't quitters. And I thought to myself, wow. He qualified that with his own life. And then he he retired and he went to Africa, started like three or... Oh, about seven churches and like two or three colleges.
And then went to be with the Lord from Africa. He and his wife, Helen. And just just amazing. Just an... Rejoicers aren't quitters.
And, so that's the overall theme of the church, of this epistle to the church at Philippi. But right specifically in chapter two, we see three ingredients we must have in our lives to have personal integrity and to glorify God through it, through our personal integrity, through our personal soundness. Because quite frankly, I mean, quite frankly, when we stand before God, that's what he's gonna look at. You're not gonna look at how much you made. He's not gonna look at what your education was.
He's not gonna look at any of that. He's gonna look at your character. He's gonna look at... And that's the thing that counts. Not how you look and not how physically fit you are, it is your character that really counts.
Integrity. And so we look at this and what are these ingredients? Well, we see in verses one through 11, the ingredient of humility in our lives. The ingredient of humility to truly glorify god in our integrity. And then we see in verses 12 through 16, the integrity, ingredient of holiness.
Holiness in our lives to truly glorify God in our integrity. And then in verses 16 through 30, we see the ingredient of a single heartedness. Single heartedness. So I hope we get through some of this because this is so rich, so fantastic. It's incredible.
Absolutely. Look at verse verse one because we see an exhortation to humility. An exhortation to humility. Now humility is really is really a weird thing, you know. Yeah.
You you read my book. You've ever heard this. You know, you've heard this before. You read them. You read my book, nine ways how I attain achieved humility and wrote about it.
I mean, you know, if you start talking about how humble you are, it's not probably... You probably need some humility, you know, type of thing. And humility is is just amazing. But we have an ex... Exhortation to humility.
Look at verses one through four. By the way, as we look at this passage one through four, this is what you want as a Christian. Especially when we're together. This is exactly what we want. This is exactly what people are looking for in terms of their own lives.
They're looking for this like crazy. Now, notice what we're looking for. If there be therefore any consolation in Christ and by the way, you know, if it it looks like maybe there is, maybe there isn't, nah, not not in the original language, it isn't. It is like this, if there be therefore any consolation in Christ and there is. And every one of these, if it raises a question, then it that it's answered in the original language with there is.
And that's what I love about being a Christian. Okay? If there be any consolation in Christ, and there is. If there be any comfort of love, and there is. If any fellowship of the spirit, and there is.
If any tender mercies and compassion, and there are. Notice I changed the verb tense. And there are. I mean, this is fantastic. This is exactly, I want this in my life.
I don't have it outside of being a Christian. I don't have it. It might come across, it might come across you might work for a company or you you go to a school that's really cool and you've got good good camaraderie. I was thinking about when I I was coming here and I played at Lakeland Community College and we we played Lorain Community College and it's big brawl, know, big brawl. But when I was in high school, I played for Willoughby South High School, and we were pretty good.
We were eighteen and five, and we did all right. We went to the district finals and lost by a point. And that never bothered me still. And so we had so much fun as, you know, I mean, did. We we went to movies together.
We we... I mean, all this kind of stuff. We called ourselves the fearsome fivesome. And I don't know, we're so fear fearful about us. But I mean, you know, we we really enjoyed that, you know.
That's nothing compared to the camaraderie I have with fellow believers because they're family. They're family. If there be any consolation in Christ... I mean, we look at this and we say to ourselves, any consolation to console somebody, to have somebody come around you and to say, you know, you, we care about you to console you. It's...
It is very, very... We go through life. Isn't that right? We go through life and there's a lot of heartache. We don't even tell anybody about that we're having in our own life.
People when they come up to you, especially brothers and sisters in Christ, fellow believers, and say, you know, I just want to let you know I'm praying for you. I love you. I care for you. Wow. That is that is it.
That's the whole, that's it. That's fantastic. That's family. That's what I desire more than anything else. That's what people want.
AI is not gonna give it to you. I don't care how, you know, if you got Grok three or if you've got, perplexity or if you've got, impetigo. That's a disease. But, you know, even anything like that, I mean, they're not gonna... That AI is not gonna give you the fellowship that only Christ can and another believer can.
If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, and there is. Any fellowship of the spirit, and there is. And I mean, I look at this, if if any any, excuse me, any comfort of love. Man, this is not, I'm gonna find my wife or find a girlfriend or find a boyfriend type of thing. That's not it.
It's the love, the love in spite of. You know what's really cool about being a Christian? God knows the worst about me and still loves me. Can you imagine that? God knows the worst about me and still loves me.
And so that that is... That translates to when we go to... We go and hang out with with Christians and we find out that they genuinely, not only just accept me but genuinely love me in Christ. We love each other. Why?
Not because we root for the Cleveland Browns or the Cleveland Indians. I'm not calling them guardians. But, you know, not because of that. We we we love each other and our fellowship and that comfort of love. You felt that when when Carl left.
You felt that comfort of love and you still do. That's the that's the beautiful... How about your husband when he passed? You felt that love, the comfort of love, and that's... You're crying your eyes out, you're you're missing your spouse, you're missing a loved one, and you're just...
You're broken inside, but you know where they are and you have that love that not only god gives but other people give because god gives it. I just want to know who can beat this. Who can beat that? Any other religious system beat that? Anybody?
I mean, I was in Wall Street one time, and I... You know, it's it's difficult when you're preaching in the open air and then ask a question. You should never do that when you're preaching, especially in Wall Street because you'll get people talking back at you. And so I was talking about forgiveness of sins. I was talking about how Jesus Christ, who is God in the flesh, died on the cross, rose again physically from the dead, and now we can have forgiveness of sins, our sins washed away.
Right? And I said, I I made a mistake. I said, all right. You got anything better than this? A home in heaven, forgiveness of sins?
You guys got anything better than this? And to my surprise, big time to my surprise, crickets with a little bit of engine cover, you know, in den of New York City. Nobody said a word. You know why? And they would've too if they had something better.
Nothing's better. Nothing's better because you get all this money, you get all this junk that you possess, it does nothing for you. There's no comfort of love. There's no consolation. But there is in Jesus.
There is in him. That's for sure. And so we look at this. If there be therefore any count... Consolation in Christ, any comfort of love.
If any fellowship of the spirit, if any tender mercies and compassions. Wow. Mercies, not getting what we do deserve. Wow. Mercy.
I love this. Any tender mercies and compassions. Somebody... You're hurting. I mean, you're hurting inside.
Yeah. I mean, you're going crazy inside. Right? And then somebody comes up to you and just puts their arm around you and said, just wanna let you know I love you. I'm praying for you.
Is there anything I can do for you? That's the Christian life. That's the Christian life. What an attraction. Gronk is not gonna do that to you.
Whoever, whatever AI guys are... You're you're following, you know, not gonna... Copilot's not gonna let let that happen for you. Jesus will. Jesus will.
And because I'm a Christian, now I have fellowship with other believers. Nothing better than this. Nothing better than this. Absolutely. And if you're like going, Chris, you're like a moron.
You'd be right. I am a moron, but I'm a saved, loved moron. I know whom I believed. And I know that he answers every need of my human life because he filled the void in my life. There's a god shaped vacuum in every human being.
And only Jesus Christ can fill that vacuum. He's the only one who can do that and that vacuum is created because of sin. Sin separates me from god and when I trust in Jesus Christ to take away my sin and then give me meaning and purpose in life. There is nothing, nothing better than that. Nothing.
And there's a lot of people here that could testify to that. Say, yeah, that's true. That is true. I found that to be absolutely a fact. Let nothing.
20:52 Fulfill my joy: be like-minded
It's like a well oiled basketball team that I mean, you know, we, what I really loved about it, we've been, we had been playing since junior high, like seventh grade. So when we got to be seniors, I just knew the Gorman was coming down the, right down the middle, right from the top of the key straight to the basket, and I'd be on the wing and I'd... The ball. I didn't even have to look. I just threw it.
He got it, scored. I mean, was so cool looking. It really was cool, the meshing together. And I tell you what, when you run back to go on defense, you're going, that feels pretty cool. That feels pretty good.
Well, it's not as good as when you minister to one another and bless each other. That has eternal consequences, and that feels way better than making a great pass or getting an assist or even scoring. Way better. And so you look at this, fulfilling my joy that you'd be like minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. You know, we had this guy who was a real hot dog on our team.
He was a real hot dog. I mean, he really was. I mean, he was kind of selfish. But when we played together, when he was on... Played with us, he was a junior, we were seniors.
When he played with us, if he was open, he got the ball. If you were open, you got the ball. It didn't matter who you were. It didn't matter if you were a jerk face or a hotdog or whatever. You got the ball to score because what was the goal?
The goal is to win. Here, this is this is way better than that. The answer is just same. Love. Being of one accord.
To have that love and to have that being of one accord, of one mind, to have that affinity is just amazing. Just absolutely amazing. One mind working together. That is fantastic. It is an incredible thing to see and behold.
And many of you have seen that. If a husband and wife do not have that one accord, they're in trouble in their marriage. If an assembly does not have that one accord, they're in trouble. If they don't have that one mind, that one accord. And then he says, look at look at verse three because now he's going into...
He's going from preaching to meddling. Notice what he says. Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory. Vainglory, it's empty doxa, that empty glory, vainglory, which is really not glory at all. So people were doing...
And and Paul talks about in chapter one, talks about how guys were preaching the gospel. Guys were preaching the gospel because he was in in bonds. Right? And he says, I praise God that they were preaching the gospel. They stood in my...
The place that I should have been at because I'm incarcerated now because of the gospel. They're taking my place. Praise god for that. Right? But there were also guys who were preaching the gospel to add to his bonds, to make him miserable.
He says, listen, I praise god that they're preaching the gospel. Their motives were all wrong. Their motives was that stick it to Paul. Didn't matter. Why?
Because the gospel is the key. The gospel is the key. And he's saying, let nothing be done through strife. So if your motivation for doing a religious service is because... And it's a secret motivation, but not before God.
But if you're doing it to add to somebody and to hurt somebody or to show off somebody, that kind of thing, then you're in you're in trouble. But don't let this be done through strife or vainglory, empty glory. It's not glory at all. People might come up and say, well, that was fantastic. You did a great job.
Blah blah blah. Right? And this is fantastic. That was really great. But if your motive is wrong, if your motive is wrong, if your integrity is wrong, and there's no soundness in your thinking process, who cares?
It's really add... It it it diminishes the ministry among yourselves. It hurts it. It really does. Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory.
26:21 Esteem others better than yourselves
And they actually said this. They said, you're going to climb the corporate ladder, you must step on people and step and climb on on them. Step on them to get ahead. You must do that. I remember reading it in The US News and World Report, I'm thinking to myself, that's that's a terrible terrible thing.
But they said, well, you're gonna if you're gonna do it. That's... They're not following Ephesians two. They're not... They didn't look at this.
Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory, but in loneliness of mind, let each esteem others better than themselves. You're to esteem, you're to look, and I am to look at each other, somebody else, another Christian, as way better than me. And that's not... By the way, that's just not I'm just gonna do this because that's what I'm supposed to do. It is a reality check-in the sense that you know that if it wasn't for Jesus Christ as your own personal savior, you would spend eternity in the lake of fire.
You can't get lower than this. You can't... I mean, it doesn't matter how great you are in terms of academics and all that kind of stuff. That doesn't matter. No Jesus, no heaven.
And this is really, this is the most important thing. By the way, if you don't have Jesus as your personal savior, you're not gonna be able to live right. You're not gonna have the integrity. You won't have the right motivation. You just won't.
You just plain won't. Sorry, you can screw it up in your mind and think I'm really gonna do this. It's not gonna work. This is not a business principle. This is a real life understanding that without Jesus Christ, it's over.
And then in that light, how could we possibly say that I'm better than you? We can't. We can't say that. Well, look look on somebody else. Look at somebody else.
I mean, this is this is amazing. Better than themselves. Look not every man. Verse four, on his own things. But every man on the things of others.
This is called selflessness. Not selfishness, selflessness is to look at somebody and say, I, you know, I'm I'm trying to figure out how how you're doing and do you need anything? I went to a church when I was growing up and I I recognized this principle. I wasn't saved. No, I went to a church that had or ornate.
Everything was ornate. They had gold literally gold script in the in the ceiling, marble. They redid the whole church and they put marble walls, gold script and everything. And I went to the parochial school there, and I knew guys who couldn't afford shoes. They had cardboard in their shoes because they had holes in their shoes and their pants were like flood pants because we had to wear uniforms and their pants were way up high.
I was one of them, but I was growing. And, you know, you look at this holes in the knees, all this kind of stuff. And it was mandatory you wear a uniform. And I thought to myself, I actually thought to myself in this in sixth grade, thinking to myself, Eddie Dubinsky can't afford this. His family can't afford this.
But you're charging us to do this and you are putting it into a edifice when these guys are poor. How can that be right? Marble walls, who cares? You know, when when the kids are suffering like that, duh. I knew it then and I wasn't even born again and didn't even know this.
Look not on the things of but on your own things, but look on the things of others. That is really loving. That is an only... Let's get something straight here. It's not that I do that in order to get to heaven.
I do that because I'm going to heaven. And God gives me the power to live that kind of life. I don't do it to get get to heaven. No. I do it because I'm going to heaven.
And I know that he redeemed me from the slave market of sin, Washed me clean. Gave me new meaning and purpose in life. So, when I look at a brother or sister in need, I want to do that because I was in need. This is the Christian life. It has nothing to do with the edifice.
We're the church. This is a building. They could make dentist offices out of this if they needed to. If you sold it and they, you know, they could do that. This is not the church.
It's the people. People who are born again, who have trusted Christ as their personal savior. This is the key. And by the way, this is what you were looking for, your whole life. I got...
I trusted Christ at the age of 18. This is what I was looking for. I found it in Jesus Christ. And then I've also found it in in terms of the camaraderie of being a Christian with other Christians. Fantastic.
33:16 The incredible example of Christ
This passage, this next passage is is a part of of the greatest statement regarding Messiah ever in the New Testament. Right here. Talks about his nature. Notice verse five. Let this mind be in you who is also...
Which was also in Christ Jesus. So have the same mind. Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who being in the form of God. Now that that's in the King James. I I've memorized in the King James, but who being in the form of God.
That word being means this, remaining or never ceasing to be. He always has been the eternal son of God. He's always been God. God. And then when he became flesh, God in the flesh.
That's exactly what this is saying. Who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God. Why? Because he's God. He's not the father and he's not the holy spirit.
He's the second person of the trinity. He is God the son. God the father, God the son, God the holy spirit. You have here that he is, didn't think it robbery to be equal. Why?
Because he is. He is. He doesn't have to strive for it. He didn't strive for it at all. Who being in the form of God thought it not robbery to be equal with God, but made himself of no reputation.
Think about this just for a moment. He spoke in Colossians chapter chapter one, tells us that he spoke the worlds into existence. He is the author of the universe, not just this planet, but the universe. He authored this. And he didn't think it robbery to be equal with God, no.
But what did he do? He humbled himself. Notice this, made himself of no reputation and took upon him the form of a servant and was made in the likeness of men. I mean, think about this for just a moment. God became man.
Talk about humility? Coming in and being a man, not sinful, and that's what it's gonna tell us. He wasn't sinful man, he had no sin nature. But he became man. Talk about humility.
The God who spoke the worlds into, spoke them into existence, became one of us. Wow. Wow. And by the way, one other thing about his humility, when he became man, he never relinquished that. When he died on the cross, he died physically.
When he rose again from the dead, he rose again physically. And then when he ascended into heaven, after like forty or fifty days, he ascended up into heaven, right? Physically. And where is he right now? He is at the right hand of the father physically.
Flesh and bone. He is at the right hand of the father physically. He'll never get rid of the human nature. Never. He is physical right this very moment.
This very moment. Stephen saw him when he was being stoned to death and he said, you know, just like what is... What Jesus said, father forgive them. Same thing. Same type of thing.
But he is at the right hand, he saw him. And so when when Carl went to be with the Lord, you know what he saw? Jesus. Physical. The bible teaches us in first John that we will be like him for we shall see him as he is.
Question, how is he? Luke 24, he tells us flesh and bone has not... A spirit hath not flesh and bone as you see me have. He rose again physically from the dead, and he ascended into heaven. He's at the right hand of the father.
That humiliation of becoming a man will stay with him forever. And he did. He did it. He loved us so much that he became he became flesh. And notice what else it's saying here.
No reputation took upon him the form of a servant, was made in the likeness of men and being found in fashion as a man. And here it is. He humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death of the cross. He died for you. He died for me.
When I look at this and I want you to think about this. When I look at what the god of the universe, the one who spoke the worlds into existence, who holds all things together by the word of his power, became man, and then he went on to went on, became obedient unto death, even death of the cross, one of the most humiliating ways to die and painful ways to die. And he did that for me. And I'm gonna look at somebody else and say, I'm better than you? You need a spiritual checkup from the neck up if that's the case.
You do. Because when we look at the one who paid the penalty for us, who rose again from the dead for us. Becoming a man was hard enough, unbelievably humble enough, but then became obedient unto death, even death on the cross for us. How in the world can I have anything? Some people say, well, that's worm theology.
40:24 Humble yourselves under God's hand
You know, a lot of church growth, know, and people will, you know, you could... You can get some kind of consultant guy come in and say, oh, you need to do this and you need to have that, you know. I tell you what we need. We need humility. We need to humble ourselves.
Peter writes, humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God that he may exalt you in due time. That's what we need to do. Humility and this is this is the thing that is so so important for us. So important for us and so important for this assembly. And then notice the exaltation due to this godly humility.
Wherefore, verse nine, god also hath highly exalted him and given him a name which is above every name. That at the name of Jesus, every knee should bow and every... In... Of things in heaven and things of the earth and under the earth and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, is God to the glory of God the Father. I've had people say to me, I've had people say to me when I've talked to them about Christ, I've had people say to me, you know, I could care less.
Oh, really? Or I've had people swear at god. Right in the open air. I mean, using all the vile language that a man can produce against Jesus Christ and I've gone up to him and say, you have no idea what you're talking about. You have no idea what he has done for you.
What he has done for you. Man thinks that he's really... I'm gonna shake my puny fist at him. Wrong. You can shake your puny little fist and indeed is puny.
When you compare him to to God, he intensely loves you. I had a guy one time at Rutgers University. He must have been a a professor or something. And I came up to him and I said, I just wanna let you know that Jesus loves you. And he looked at me and said, I hate God.
I said, he loves you. So much so that he sent his son Jesus to die for you. Knowing the worst about you, he still died for you. Wow. The humility.
Now, it's always the case. I'm always overtime. And I'm sorry. We'll have to get this, but I I want one one other thing, if you can indulge me maybe another minute. Because he goes on and and talks about working out your own salvation with fear and trembling, not working for it, working it out.
But then he says in verse 20... 19, but I trust the Lord Jesus to send Timotheus or Timothy shortly unto you that I may know of your good comfort and know your your state. For I have no man like minded who will naturally care for your state. For all seek their own, verse 21. Park your peepers on this verse.
For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ. J. B. Phillips, wrote a translation, it's called the New Testament in a Modern Translation. He wrote this JB Phillips.
You know how he translated this? He said, translating the Bible from the Greek into English is like wiring a house with the power on. You're not doing that, are you bro? Try not to. We call them Sparky for short.
You know how know how JB Phillips translated this? Boy, it convicts me like you can't believe. All the others seem to be wrapped up in their own affairs and do not really care for the business of Jesus Christ. All the others seem to be wrapped up in their own affairs and do not really care for the business of Jesus Christ. I hate to say this, but...
Or ask this. Could that be said of you? Could that be said of me? When you have a group of people like here at Westlake, loving each other with his love, Caring for each other with his care and his focus on others. How can you beat that?
Would you grow as a as a family Yes. Yes. That's the key. It's him. And that's the key of me yielding to him and really caring about the business of Jesus Christ.
That's the thing that's going to be remembered more than anything else. You really cared. You really loved. You really ministered to each other. That should be the testimony of every assembly on this planet.
46:54 Making application of the sermon
Has to make the application and the application is this, are we living this? Are we doing it? Do we have the integrity for this? You are what you have been becoming. If you've trusted Christ as your personal savior, god is working in your life to fulfill what he just told us in Philippians chapter two.
He's working on that. I don't want to work against him. How about you? Father, we just thank you so much for your great love and grace that is beyond all our sins. We thank you for your graciousness to us and we ask you that you would work powerfully in our lives.
Please, we pray. In Jesus' name, amen.
