Chris Schroeder · Sunday, 15 June 2025 · 46 minutes · Topical message · Church Truth · Unity

Chris Schroeder preaches from Philippians chapter four, exploring themes of unity in Christ, the mind of Christ, and the importance of rejoicing in the Lord. He draws out practical applications such as being anxious for nothing, practicing thanksgiving, and taking concerns to the Lord in prayer, using personal illustrations from his long-time friendship.

Outline and transcript

0:00 Illustrations about my friend John Gorman

I just wanted to... I've given many illustrations regarding my friend, John Gorman, and maybe you remember some of those, some of those illustrations. And I hope you forget them because John's here. And my friend, we've known each other since the first day of first grade. And I'm 70...

I'll be 73 July 6. Right? And so so let's see. I don't know how many... Don, how many years is that now?

I went to MBI, not MIT. So we were six six... He was a little older, six years of age when John and I met in first grade in Willoughby, Ohio, immaculate conception. And his sister Annie, who I've... I mean, their family their family is like a second family.

Their... His mother was like my mother, and my mother was like his mother. Anyway, you couldn't win for losing in in Willoughby because you'd have all these mothers around to get you. So I've known John all those years and Annie too and Annie. So just so great to have them here today, and I just thought I'd point that out.

And plus, you're having a clean out. What's that clean out thing? What's that clean out the chapel thing? What is that? What is that?

Clutter. Clutter. Okay. Barb and I are taking the piano home. So I'm just...

Thought I'd tell you that if you see us moving this out. A number of years ago, I I... It's been a number of years. We we did a lot of open air meetings in the place called the Week Wake Park in New Jersey. Week Wake Park was a fantastic, a fantastic school system, mainly Jewish and, in terms of its population.

Then they they all left, and and other people came in and it be... It ran down and crime ridden and just just an awful awful place. And I know people who wouldn't even drive through a Week Wake Park today. And we did kids meetings there. This is this is how we would do a kids meeting.

We would take a big tarp and before we put it down, you could look at the look at the playground that we were gonna be getting the kids at, And we look at the playground, it looked like diamonds on the playground and that was all broken glass. So what we did was we had to have it in our van, we had to sweep it out. We had to sweep that because you put the tarp down, it punctures the kid, goes right through the tarp. And you don't want to have that. So that's what we that's what we did.

And the guy that worked with us, he ran... He started a church called Calvary Bible Church in Weekewake Park. Now my friend, his name is Grover Wilcox and his wife Helen, they met at, I think, Wheaton College. He was a year before Billy Graham was graduated. He was a year before Billy Graham, and he had a desire, him and Helen had a desire to go to Africa after graduation.

And so that's that's what he was planning his whole education at Wheaton College. And so... But the Lord redirected him and took him to Africa in Weeke Wake Park. And you have to understand something here. This is a little bit interesting.

My friend, Grover, much older than me, way older than my dad actually, was almost... His skin was almost translucent. He was so white. I never knew Grover without white hair. He had solid white hair, and, he went into a neighborhood that was totally black and very rundown.

And he's... Was there for forty five years. And and Grover Grover, an interesting guy, him and Helen. Grover ministered to that neighborhood for, like I said, for forty five years. Started Calvary Bible Church, and then he was...

Twice, he was beaten almost to death. They took him out of his bed, took him downstairs, and the first time, they had his son Chris tied him up right next to him and made him... Made Chris watch them almost kill his dad. And yet, Grover stayed. He recovered in the hospital and that happened to him twice.

Chris didn't have to stay and watch the second time. He didn't. I don't know where he was, but he didn't stay the second time. But, this is this is Grover's commitment. And so when Grover Grover talks, about reaching the lost and caring about people, I I really paid attention to Grover.

5:43 Philippians chapter four

And so we're gonna look at the... We're gonna go through this passage. I'm not gonna read it and then come back. I'm going to just go through as we go. Paul makes Paul, the author of this this epistle.

Really this epistle is a... Or letter is a thank you note. It's a thank you note by Paul to the church at Philippi, the saints at the church at Philippi. They had... They were very generous.

They were tremendous to him and he says so. He says, thank you so much for this. And it's very, very connected, very, very connected with with Paul. But they had problems. And the problems was a disunity.

They weren't unified. And we're gonna see that in this text. We're gonna see that that they needed to get together. They needed to have the same mind. They needed this.

This have to happen. And so you have you have here Paul saying, you know, he he gives us three or four exhortations that we need to have that will motivate us. And God wants us to have have these four exhortations in our life as individual believers and as a church. And what are these exhortations? Well, Paul exhorts us in verses one through three.

Paul exhorts us to have the same mind in the lord. The same mind in the lord. And then four through seven, he exhorts us to seek the same master and in verses eight through nine, he, Paul exhorts us to have the same musing, not music, musing, thinking about it and then in verses 10 through 23, Paul exhorts us to seek the same maturity, the same maturity in the lord and so, we're going to look at look at verses one through three and we can see here that they needed to have the same mind and we need when we need to have this too, same mind in our stand together for the lord and notice what he says. He says, therefore, my beloved, dearly beloved, and long for my joy and crown. So, stand fast in the lord, my dearly beloved.

Now, this is interesting and look at verse two, I beseech Yodia and Syntyche that they be of the same mind in the lord. By the way, it's an interesting thing. When you look at the word stand fast, the Greek language is interesting. You got one word and it gives you so much in one word. It gives you a lot about it, you know.

This is in the imperative. That is to say, you must stand fast. Stand fast in what? You stand fast in terms of your belief system, your commitment, you know, firmly committed to our belief system. This is really what he is.

Stand fast in that. Don't, you know, we are in a flaky world. We really are. We got a lot of people just flaking out. You know, though, yeah, you believe this, you don't believe that, you believe this, and I'm speaking about Christians.

I'm speaking about Christians. You know, you you like this belief and we feel like we're in smorgasbord doctrinally. You know, I like this. I don't like that. I like this.

I don't like that. I'll take this. What does the word of god teach? And this is what he is saying. He's saying, stand fast in that and that is quite frankly, that is the only thing that is going to unite us.

10:11 My bond with other believers

He never changes. I am the lord thy god. I change not. The old testament says and so, we look at this and and then he's exhorting two individuals, Eodia and Syntyche that they be of the same mind in the lord. So, there must have been a squabble somewhere in some reason why they were they weren't at the same mind and so he he points those two out.

He's saying, hey, listen. You need to do this. You need to be together on these things And when when you play when you play... John and I played for Willoughby South High School, then John went to the University of Louisville, and I went to Lakeland Community College and played basketball. When we played in South High School, when we played basketball in South, it was it was like poetry in motion.

Went to my twentieth re... Reunion, and one of the girls said to us, one of the girls that graduated with us, she said, you know something, Chris? It was so fun to watch you guys play. It was so fun. Why?

Some of us didn't like some other guy, you know, guys on the team, but when you stepped on the court, we were we were one. We were one. When I went to Lakeland, that was not true. And it wasn't fun. We wanna have a good experience of being Christians together with other other Christians and have that good experience.

What you have to do is you have to be one. Be of the same mind. And that, you know what that takes? It takes knowing what the word of god has to say about certain things. So we have to study to show ourselves approved unto god, workman that needs not to be ashamed.

When we played basketball at Woolabee South, we had certain plays. And some of those plays, you know, if if our teammates didn't know the play, the play would be broken up and we'd pay for it. Lose the ball, off the rim, not not a good shot, etcetera, etcetera. But when we did the play right, it really worked well, And we usually scored. And some of the things that, you know, these are these are things that we need to do.

And our playbook, our only playbook is this book right here. What is what is this teach? It only teaches one thing. There's one application. I mean, excuse me, one interpretation, many applications, but only one interpretation.

What does the Bible teach? And that's that's the goal of every interpreter of reading the word of god. What does it say? What does it mean? What does it mean to me?

And so that is so that's application. What does it say? And and then you have an... That's... What is...

Observation. And then interpretation. What does it mean? Interpretation. What does it mean to me?

And I always do like a cheer with that. What does it say? What does it mean? What does it mean to me? Hey.

You know, and that's that's the way we have to interpret the word of God. The word of God is not gonna give you different opinions. I had a guy one time tell me, he said, you know, Chris, the Bible teaches you can lose your salvation and the Bible teaches you can be secure forever in your salvation. I said, I don't think so, Harry. That was his name.

That's why I called him that. I don't think that. I don't think so. And we have to be of the same mind. And we want the mind of Christ.

14:23 Mind of Christ

Notice what it says, and I entreat you also true yoke fellow. Now nobody knows who that is. Nobody knows who he's really talking about. Some commentators will say, well, it's about this guy, it's about that. I don't know how they get there.

Because that's not what the Greek is saying at all. It's just saying, yoke fellow but so, as some help those women who labor with me in the gospel with Clement also and with the other fellow workers whose names are in the book of life. Now, that's a whole another subject, the whole book of life thing. You know, you've got the book book of life but you know, these guys were they were focused on reaching people. Work with them.

Work with them, he says. Help those people. And he names Clement also and the fellow workers. Work with those individuals. You know, my my buddy John, and I'm so glad he's here because he said to me one time when he he told...

He's the first guy that told me about Christ. Now because we were both Roman Catholic, I thought I was okay and I didn't have a clue what he was really talking about. I mean, he said, you can know for sure. And it took a Protestant, another guy that we played basketball with because I thought this guy's crazy. You know, he's a Protestant.

He's going to hell, man. That's what I thought. Us Catholics got a corner on god and and so when John John tried to lead me to Christ and then Dave Wyble later later did about two weeks later, I came to Christ in 03/22/1971. But John later and we've been friends since first grade, but, you know, this is an interesting thing because John said, what could be more important? He told me this.

What could be more important in a person's life than for them to come to know Jesus as their savior? What could be more important than that? Cure for cancer? I mean, name it. Nothing.

Because we're talking about forever. That's what we're talking about and I thought to myself, you know, that is absolutely true. That is absolutely true. What could be more important for you if you don't know Jesus as your savior for you to come to know him and to recognize that he's God in the flesh, that he did die on that cross, and shed his blood to wash away your sins, and then three days later, rise again from the dead physically. What could be more important?

You need to trust in him. He's the only one who died for you. He's the only one who rose again from the dead for you. That your sins can be forgiven. That my sins can be forgiven.

That anybody who places their faith in him and what he did on that cross can have everlasting life. See, I don't know. I I met a lady one time and I made a huge mistake. I met this lady, she had a a four prong walker, you know, just a cane. You know what I'm talking about?

One of those. And I found out what her name was. I I said I said, what... What's your name? I I asked her.

Yeah. And she said, Elsa. I said Elsa, how... Sorry to ask you this, but how old are you? I'm thinking 78, 79 tops.

I mean, she was mobile, she was lucid, she was she goes, you know what she told me? She goes a 103. Are you serious? A 103? She looked so good and she was a poster child for oil of Olay.

I mean, it was unbelievable. She was great. And then she she passed at 106. She was born on April 1900. So in 1941, she heard...

She... I mean, the Japanese bomb parole, she was 41. I mean, just go just go in historically through the whole last century. And that was... That's her age, you know, and it just amazing to me.

19:34 We strive not to die

We gotta have youth and we... And all that kind of stuff. And somebody said, well, we look at you. You're you're looking pretty old. You're bald.

Yeah. That's true. I shave that gray right off of my head. That's what I do. I mean, it'd be gray all over the place.

Right? We strive. In fact, the funeral funeral business, they lay the person out and they... Doesn't he look like himself? Don't they...

Doesn't he look good? He's gone. No. He doesn't look good because he's not there. She's not there.

I mean, this is the thing that's really really weird. We don't want anybody to die, but the thing about it is this, we will. It is appointed unto men once to die. I wanna ask you a question. If you've received Jesus as your savior, praise God, you've got eternal life.

But what are you doing with your life? And this is exactly what Paul is addressing here. He's telling the Philippian saints, he's to... And he's about to he's about to tell him, you know, what is the what is the great thing that needs to happen is to work as an assembly. I like it.

I like... Oh, what's that guy that founded Navigators? Who's that guy? Dawson Trotman. Thank you.

And, Dawson Trotman founded the Navigators and he wrote this big wheel. It was a big wheel and he drew this wheel with a a a four spokes and that the hub is Christ. The two spokes up and down, prayer and bible study. That's getting from god and giving to god, right? And then, giving to the world is evangelism and fellowship.

He says, if you're missing one of those spokes in your life, if you're missing one of those spokes in your life, you do not have the balanced Christian life. In fact, that was the title of his wheel. It's called the navigator wheel. Look it up. It's really really helpful.

The balanced Christian life and a lot of times we really focus on bible study. We really focus on fellowship. We really focus on on our prayer and we really, you know, all that, right? But we do not focus on evangelism and that's just as important a component as bible study. We gotta take it in and then give it out.

We gotta exercise that and that's exactly what he is saying. He's saying, look at this. This is what it is. This is what we need to do. I entreat you, young fellow and help those women in the gospel with Clement also.

With the other fellow workers whose names are in the book of life. And then not only does do we should have the same mind and have the same service but we should have we should have the same master. Notice this, seek the same master. Look at verses four and five. It's seeking the master in terms of our attitude.

And attitude is everything. Attitude is everything. You can have a person be and I've seen it. I've seen it on the court. I've seen it in ministry.

A person that might have all the giftedness of their ministry. I mean, they can speak. They can all that kind of stuff and have a bad attitude. And notice what he says. Notice what he says, rejoice in the lord always and again, I say rejoice.

There's nobody more boring and it... After a while, it gets really boring than a disgruntled person. Del Carnegie once said, act enthusiastic, you'll be enthusiastic. You look at this, rejoice in the Lord always. And again, I say rejoice.

24:14 Why should we rejoice in the Lord?

As we yield to him, he guides, he protects, he empowers, he does everything for us. We cannot do it ourself. He does it for us and through us. I like when somebody once prayed and I... When I first got saved, I heard it.

The old river of God flow through me that you might set others free. And I think that that is a great little saying, you know, it's a great little sentence. Oh, river of God, flow through me that you might set others free. Why? Because God can do that.

And by the way, let me just say this about about you. If you know Jesus as your personal savior, god intensely loves you and intensely wants to use you. Oh, not me, man. I haven't been trained. I haven't gone to buy.

God wants to use you. Intensely want. He just wants you to yield to him. That's what he wants. Yield to him.

He'll guide you. He'll show you what he wants in your life. And our attitude is, oh no, sometimes our attitude, why didn't you do this? Why didn't you do that? Hey, lord.

I give it to you. Rejoice in the lord always and again, I say rejoice. Now, when you study the Bible, if you you look at words, you look at some words and you say to yourself, wow, that word here is a word, right? What does that word mean? It's actually a command and it is in the imperative again.

It's in the you must rejoice. It's not optional. It's in the imperative. You've got to rejoice. Why?

How can we not rejoice in the god who cares for us, send his son to die for us, gives us strength and power, and when we trust in him, does everything for us, we can't rejoice in that. Oh, my word. Yes, you can. And he's commanding us. He's telling us it's an imperative for you to rejoice in the lord.

If you see that word and you go, you know, you just found out that it's in the imperative, right? Cool. But if he repeats it in the in the book, you go, wow, I need to sit up and pay attention to this. I need to do this but if he says it in the same verse, in which he does, you need to really pay attention and you need to obey it. It is imperative.

So you know that old song, I I always think of this lady with this big broad hat, know. Count your blessings, count them one by one. I hear that song, that's what I think, you know. But it's true. Count your blessings.

What has God done for you today? What has God done for you this week? Rejoice. Rejoice in the lord always and notice not just when you count your blessing, always rejoice in the lord always and again, I say rejoice and then he tells us not only about our attitude. Look at verse five.

Let your moderation, let your let your forbearance or gentleness be known unto all men. The lord is at hand. He is right here. That's what I like about it. That's what I like about being a Christian.

You know, we say, god, can you, you know, we say, okay, this is this is kind of interesting theology here. We we say, spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me. And I I like that hymn. It's a great hymn. I I...

But I think it's wrong theologically because well, the moment you trust in Jesus Christ as your personal savior is the moment you have the lord Jesus indwelling you and here's what Jesus said, I and my father will make our abode with you And then here's what Paul said, Christ or not, he said Christ in you, the hope of glory, but he also said, if you have not the holy spirit in you, you're none of his. So think about that just for a moment. The trinity indwells the believer and if you know Jesus as your personal savior, the trinity indwells you. So, I don't have to say, hey, fall afresh on me. I just yield my life to him and I'm going to experience his incredible power in my life and so that's what he that's what he really does.

I like the song. It's a cool song And... But understand that the holy spirit is not like some something outside of us and then just come... And he is outside of us. He's in you.

He's he's omnipresent. But the thing is that he's in me and I just ask him to work. God will work. He'll work in your life. He wants to.

Think about that for a moment. God wants to and he will. And then he's going to make another command. I love the King James on this. Look at verse six.

29:58 Be anxious for nothing

This is what's gonna happen. Oh, my word, you know, like this. It's almost like, will the Cleveland Browns win the NFL championship? I mean, the Super Bowl, you know, all this kind of... I'm anxious about that.

Hope you don't got any money on that. Nobody's anxious. Nobody's anxious on that. Nobody's anxious. You know, so but you you look at this and you say, man, you got Ernest Biner on the one yard line and is he going to fumble?

You know, I'm anxious about that, you know. Oh, and he did. Anyway, you look at this and you say, we're anxious and so, Paul understands us and he tells us, be anxious. So you can be anxious, but notice the prepositional phrase, for what? Nothing.

Be anxious for nothing. I love the way the King James puts it. Be anxious for nothing or don't be anxious. It just doesn't have the the tone to it. Be anxious for nothing.

In other words, whatever is in your mind and in your heart that is making you anxious, stop. Know that the lord is at hand. Know that your god can take care of any problem that you have. Know that. That's what he is telling us.

Rejoice. Lord, thanks for this particular situation. I rejoice in you. Because you can handle it. You can work it.

You will do it. And then then he tells us, notice what else he says about this. Let your moderation be known unto all men. Let your... The lord is at hand.

Be anxious for nothing but in everything. Did you hear that? Actually, I I looked that up in the Greek, you know, the Greek the Greek the Greek says on that, it says everything. It doesn't mean the stuff that you can't handle. It doesn't mean that.

It means in everything. So whatever the whatever that is, you know, lord, I give it to you. Give me, give me strength. No matter what the situation, no matter what, no matter how you, you know, no matter what your education is, no matter, not in everything by prayer and supplication. Now, some people say and the and the Greek really reflects this that it's like a synonym.

Prayer and supplication are like the same thing but I thought to myself, why did they translate prayer and then supplication? Because prayer is really a pouring out of your heart to God. And then supplication is the... I actually kind of the way you do it. You're really doing it with intensity.

I'm supplicating. I'm, Lord, you've got to work. You've got to do this. You will... And that's really what he is telling us.

That's why the difference, the the two are there. I'm praying. I'm asking God, and it's not just, you know, I'm but my heart is yearning for it, for god to work. See, understand something here. We have a relationship with God.

Just think about that for a moment. I'm a I'm a name dropper. You know, I met some famous people. I... Hulk Hogan.

I I told you all about those guys. You know, all these name droppers and all this kind of stuff. How about this one? I know god. And the cool part is, he knows me.

Psalm one thirty nine tells me how much he knows me. He he knows me and god actually loves me. He knows the worst about me and still loves me and so, we look at this and we, you know, we we pour out to him in everything by prayer and supplication. And then notice this, do you see that word there? That prepositional phrase starts with what?

34:33 Thanksgiving

How shall he not with him also freely give us all things? Wow. If he died on the cross to save you from your sins, why don't you think... Why do you think that he can't work in your life now at this problem? Because our focus is off of him and on us.

It's off of his it's off of his abilities and onto our inabilities. And so he tells us, he he says, with thanksgiving, let your request be made known unto god. I had a guy one time, he said to me, and this is, I've I felt like I needed a theological pie, you know, in my hand, Boston cream, you know. Just go... Right?

He goes, oh, you know... I don't know why I say it in the British accent, but, oh, you know, I never ask God. I never pray for myself. What did that make me? I pray for myself all the time.

He's telling us to pray for yourself all the time. Why? Because we're leaky, needy people all the time. We yield ourselves to him. Lord, you've gotta work.

Would you work in this life? Work in my life. Work in this situation. Lord, help me with the answer. I'm taking a test.

You know, if I studied and even if I didn't study, lord, give me, give me grace, help me, have mercy on me. Praying always and that's exactly what he tells the Thessalonians. Pray always without ceasing. In everything by prayer, with thanksgiving, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving. Make your request name known unto god and the peace of god that passes all understanding shall garrison around your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

There's a settled peace. It's a... Here's how I here's how I did it. When I first trusted Christ as my savior, I gotta tell you, the moment I trusted Christ as my savior, I prayed a prayer with my friend Dave, and I asked Jesus to be my savior. And here's how it was.

Here's how I felt. I was just like this. The peace of god. I want that all the time. Not that I walk around like a zombie.

No way. But you walk around with the assurance of God's working in your life and that brings peace. He says, peace I give unto you. Not as the world gives it, give I unto you. Peace I give unto you.

And that's exactly what I want and desire in the Christian life. And that's the answer. And I I know our time is evaporated, but I want you to look at this. He says, finally, brethren, look at verse because it's our what we think about. As a man thinketh in his heart, so he is.

Look at verse eight and nine. Finally, my brother and whatsoever things are true, whatever things are just, are honest, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there be any virtue, if there be any praise, think on these things. Those things which you have both learned and received and heard and seen in me do. You know that word do? D o?

It's in the imperative again. It's not... Do it. You know, I think I I think that maybe Nike borrowed this. Just do it.

You know? I think they might... Maybe they were studying Philippians in their bible study at Nike. I don't know. But I have no idea.

But this is really what he's saying. Just do it. It's imperative that you do it. What are you learning from this today? Do it.

Do it. Rejoice. And then also, what are we thinking about? What do you think about? As a man thinks in his heart, so he is.

My mom used to tell me, she said, Chris, I never watch the nightly news because I got to go to bed early and all it does is disturb me. I get rid of the news apps. I got rid of Facebook for a while. I got rid... Why?

Because some of it... Except I got them back on and all I get is the puppies. I watch the puppies, you know, and the cute little puppies, especially Goldens. Golden Retriever, juju boo boo. I love them.

I love them. Barb doesn't want one. She said, You can get one when I'm dead. I'm going, Thanks a lot, Barb. Man.

Oh, man. Well, then he talks about exhorts us to seek the same maturity. He tells us, and I'm gonna just look at two two verses. Look at verse 13. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

And then verse 19, but my god shall supply all your need according to his riches and glory by Christ Jesus. By the way, I just wanna let you know, god actually means that. He will supply. You know, we do not know. We worry a lot, don't we?

Where am I gonna get the next check? Where am I gonna get the next buck? When am I gonna get this? And I've, you know, how's this gonna happen? What's gonna happen with this?

How can I? And that's called worry. Leave it to him. He can do for you. My god shall supply all your need in Christ Jesus.

Mister Boss, we're gonna sing that song. Okay? He's gonna lead it. You don't want me to lead this. And where where's this piano player?

She left? I don't either. But we're gonna we're gonna we're gonna do that. And you got that up... Oh, she's up there.

41:54 Take it to the Lord in prayer

A lot of times, we do not know and never see that verse happen in our lives. You know why? Because we don't trust him. And we take matters in our own hands and we start to, you know, work it instead of looking at God and letting God work it. My friend, Grover Wilcox, retired from that Calvary Bible Church after forty five years, turned it over, and then retired.

Where do you think, Don? Where do you... Don, where do you think Grover went and Helen went? Yeah. Africa.

Started three universities and like six churches and died in Africa. You know what he said one time? He said, Rejoicers are not quitters. And when I heard Grover say that, it was it was 09/11/1983 when I heard him say that. Rejoicers are not quitters.

I knew that was coming from a guy who paid and knew it cold. Rejoicers are not quitters. Let's take it to the Lord in prayer. Maybe we could stand on this one. I hate people that do that, but to the lord in prayer his arms he'll take and shield will find a soul that's there Let's pray.

Father, we just ask you that you would help us to oh look at these words and it's it's important for us to obey your word. Help us our focus to be on your son. Help us, oh god, to yield everything to you and let that peace just dwell in our hearts. We ask you lord to just protect us as we go and just really help us to live this chapter. We ask this in Jesus' name.

Amen.
