Outline and transcript

0:03 Introduction and personal story

That... They didn't ask me to, during that number, bring my bongos. You can do it now if you want. Can you imagine that? That's the weird part is I can.

I can't imagine that. It's good to be here. Last Sunday of the year and I'm going to couch what we're going to talk about today. I'm going to couch it in terms of my encounters with Mormon missionaries. If you don't mind.

Of course, you know, I I do mind. No. I'd like us to think about about this. Okay? So, I've talked to missionaries.

My wife and I were walking through a grocery store. Now, in the old days and which is a long time, my wife and I have been married. Was it Barb forty eight years, right? Forty eight years, right, right. And so that's quite a bit many years, forty eight years.

And when I first got to know Barb and then married her, she was what they called a wallflower. What that meant was Barb didn't like to interact, she was like real hesitant and maybe you might even say shy in terms of dealing with with people. And so what I'm about to tell you is very startling to me with Barb's Barb's demeanor about things in the old days. She's not that way now. I mean, it's just, I guess, maybe learning to live with me has changed her, I guess.

So we're in the grocery store and then she goes like this to me. She goes... She grabs grabs me. I'm in the cereal aisle. I love the cereal aisle, especially with the prizes in the box.

You know? But I... You know, so I I... She grabs my arm and she says to me, she says, they're over there. They're over there.

I'm going, you know, what cereal is... What's what's over there? I'm going, kind of kind of like really emphatic about these cereals being over there. She goes, no. No.

No. I said, what are you talking about? She goes, over there. Over there. And she was pointing to two guys with ties, black, you know, dark ties, white shirts with little name tags.

She goes, Mormons. Yeah. They were Mormon missionaries. She goes, go get them. And I said, I mean, this is like really weird.

So, the way we go get em is to invite them into our home because these guys are 19 to 22 years of age. They've paid their own way to be missionaries with the Mormon, the Latter Day Saints, the Church of the Latter Day Saints. They paid their own ways which is to be admired. I mean, it's just really to be admired and so, they they did this and knowing that and knowing that they're probably eating ramen noodles every night unless somebody gets em invites them to dinner. So, when you invite Mormon missionaries to dinner, my...

Our goal is to witness to them. That's our goal. I mean, that's the only goal we have is to witness to them. And so we know that they have dietary restrictions, that is no caffeine at all. So no coffee, no tea, no chocolate, no nothing like that because they have these dietary restrictions.

I've got stories about that. Really, I really do. But so we we invited these guys over and I came up to him and I said, You're you're missionaries, aren't you? And he goes, oh, they go, oh, yeah. Yeah.

Absolutely. I said, would you come and visit us? Well, that lights their fire. That's why they're there. You know, and so, they put our stuff down, address, data, and all that kind of stuff and we had them over not to dinner.

I mean, yes, to dinner, not for dinner and the preposition makes a makes a difference and so we we talk and the way you talk to Mormon missionaries is this two things and there's there's three pillars of missionaries. I think it's three or three or four but the two two great pillars of Mormons of Mormonism is the priesthoods. You have to understand that they they say, what makes you want me, what makes you want me to be a Mormon and they think that they have the authority for them to tell me that I can be a Mormon in this thus go to the third heaven and they're they're they're doctrine and I'm not going to go in into their doctrine in so far as correctly translated but in so far as that I can do that this morning but the two pillars of their and if you undercut these pillars, it's over. It's over form. As Mormon missionaries, as Mormons.

5:37 Knocking down the pillars of Mormon theology

Last time I was with you, we looked at Hebrews chapter five eleven through six twenty. We're going to look at Hebrews chapter seven and we're going to talk about in couched in the, this is not a a cult seminar on how to witness to Mormon. This is not it. Though this will help in terms of what you look at, how you look at at them, okay? So, just just some brief other brief comments regarding Mormonism.

Mormons believe that Jesus, they'll tell you that they're born again and they will tell you they believe in Jesus Christ as god. In the flesh, they'll even say that. But he is an he is an angel. He is an angel. Actually, he is actually the spirit brother of Lucifer.

So, he is an angel. That's what they call him. Where Jehovah's Witnesses believe that Jesus is Michael the archangel. Mormons believe he is the spirit brother of Lucifer and they fought between each other for the right to redeem mankind because Adam god sent them. Adam god was just like you and me.

Came down and had carnal knowledge with Mary and just like a man just like you and I. So, this is Mormon theology. I don't care what they tell you. That's exactly what they believe And we can... I mean, you say, Chris, where'd you get that information?

Man, it's easy to produce. And I've talked to so many Mormon missionaries. It's unbelievable. So to think that Mormons or Mormonism or the Church of Latter Day Saints or the reorganized church which is now called the community of Christ, they changed their name. The reorganized church of the Latter Day Saints changed their name to the community of Christ.

They all believe that that the very very same thing. So, when a Mormon missionary comes knocking at my door or I see him in a grocery store, etcetera and we invite him to come in and to talk with us, this is where we go. I go to Hebrews seven. I go nowhere else. I don't talk about Joe Smith too much.

I don't talk about anything except, you know... So also one of a few other points that you need to understand about Mormons. They believe in four revelations. Four main revelations. Not the book of Revelations.

That's that's actually incorrect. It's the book of revelation. So, but they believe in four major revelations and that's the pearl of great price, doctrine, and covenants, one book and the book of Mormon and the Bible with the Bible being the oldest in so far as correctly translated. We believe in the King James version of the Bible in so far as correctly translated and so that's you know, that's what they hold to. And that's an escape clause.

That's their get out of jail free type of thing because it's not correctly translated. And the way I try to help those individuals understand, I ask them this question. I say, are you a, are these questions? I said, are you a Greek scholar? And they'll look, they're 19, you know?

I guess they could be but I said, are you a Greek scholar? And they go, no. I said, me neither. I said, are you a Hebrew scholar? And they go, no.

And I said, me neither. I said, are you an Aramaic scholar? Because you got some of the Old Testament in Aramaic and Jesus speaks Aramaic, you know, a little bit. Are you an Aramaic scholar? And they go, no.

I said, me neither. I said, how do you know it's correctly translated? So, it's an escape clause. So, they believe in the King James version of the Bible and I I I know there's a plethora of translations out there but if I'm going to witness to Mormons and or Jehovah's witnesses, I need to know the King James version and use it because they will not accept it, especially Mormons will not accept it, but they will, they say, it is the oldest of the four revelation. Pearl and great price, doctrine and covenants, book of Mormon, and the Bible being the oldest.

The Bible King James version of the Bible and so far as correctly translated. Now, what I I ask him these questions. I ask him this and we're going to go through this because this is I'm going to title this the pillar of our faith and I'm going to use ours our the illustration of Mormonism to convey what the truth of Hebrews seven is talking about. Understand what the book of Hebrews was designed for. The book of Hebrews and I personally believe Paul wrote it.

I think there's good reason for that. I'm not going to die for that. That's for sure. If you put a nine millimeter to my head and say recant on the authorship of Hebrews, I'll say, okay, we don't know for sure. Save my life, right?

11:41 Paul's magnificent book and the law

Come back to the law and Paul is going to say, there's no use for you to come back to the law. It's not effective. It doesn't do anything for you except it does it does one thing for you. The law does one thing and the law tells us how wicked we are. That's what the law does and that's true today.

Yeah, it's true today. Paul talks about it in the book of Romans. I didn't know sin unless I knew that sin was wrong. You know, that I had I broke the law and the law tells me how wicked I am. There's not one person on this planet ever that fulfilled the law except Jesus Christ.

Except him. There's not one person. Babies are not born innocent. They're not. They're born sinful.

I saw this with my son when he was one years of age, you know, and he saw this other this other child in a diaper and he pushes him, you know? I had and the kid fell down and and had started crying and I had to go discipline my son and I, you know, told him it was wrong. I never told my son. I said, you know, I I always had to constantly tell him that this is wrong. Because we're innately evil.

I'm sorry about that. I know they're cute and you know, all that kind of stuff and they move and all that, right? But they're evil. And so are you. Because all have sinned and come short of the glory of god.

So, there's only one person and the law tells me how far I fall short. You cannot gain righteousness before god which is the only requirement to get into heaven and that is righteousness. You need to be right with god. You need to have that righteousness given to you and charged to your account. That's called imputation.

They impute to your account that righteousness. Actually, it's his righteousness. He takes our sinfulness, we get his righteousness. This is what the Bible clearly tells us, right? And this is what Paul is writing to the Hebrews about and in chapter seven, he's continuing the argument from chapter six and then he says in which...

It says, which hope... Verse 19 of chapter six, which hope we have as an anchor of the soul both sure and steadfast which entered into that which into that within the veil and and so the Jew is understanding. He's understanding that when Jesus died on that cross, when the lord Jesus, you remember the historicity of this, the historical events of this, when the, when the, when Jesus died on the cross, and when he actually died, that veil was rent in two. Isn't that right? Was...

And that veil was not like a little wispy veil, you know, the blows in the wind. No. It was about this thick and it went from top to bottom, miraculously. Now, they sewed it up. They sewed it back up to continue the sacrifice, the sacrificial system, but it's not going to do anything, didn't do anything.

When Jesus Christ died on that cross, that veil was rent in two. Ain't that something? What does that tell? What's the significance of that? We have direct access now before the throne of God.

I can come boldly before the throne of grace directly because of what Jesus Christ has done. That's fantastic and this is what he is telling him. He is telling him this in chapter six and we see this and then he says, that within the veil, wherefore the forerunner is that is for us entered even Jesus made a high priest for or... Forever after the order of Melchizedek. Now, I had a friend of mine that called him Melchizedek and that's a cheesy way of calling them.

17:23 Melchizedek's priesthood versus Levitical priesthood

But the first 11 verses, first 10 verses of this he's talking about how Abraham paid tithes to this guy, this fellow named Melchizedek, king of Salem. And this is way way way way before. Okay. So who is in... Let me ask you this question.

Who is in the loins of Melchizedek? Who is in the loins of Melchizedek? You know what I mean by the in the loins of? Who is who is in the loins? Yes.

Abraham. Abraham. Who is in Abraham? Who is in the loins of Abraham? Say again?

Many many people, right? But primarily, in this particular thing, you have Levi. Levi, where we get the Levitical law, where we get the law. Moses and we get the law from, you know, from Levi and you have the Levitical priesthood. In which they, the whole thing, they have the Levitical priesthood.

And Levitical priesthood tells us... I mean, if you want to know about the Levitical priesthood, read Leviticus. Read Leviticus. And and it's it's really hard to read sometimes. You know, you and you got this and you got this and you got that and you got this.

Two turtle love wave. Wave and you got this and you get on and on and on and you're going, man, who can follow this? And the that's the point. Amen. Nobody can.

Nobody can get right before god by following the law. Nobody can. Nobody can do this except Jesus did. Jesus did. He's the only one who followed it to the letter.

He was the fulfillment of the law. And that is just absolutely amazing. And so you look at you look at this and now he says, now verse... Look at verse four. It says, now consider how great this man was unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth part of spoil.

And verily they that are of the sons of Levi and receive the office of the priesthood have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law. Now, you know, we get... You can get lost in this. Quite frankly, you can get lost in this. What it is really saying though is that these Levites paid tithes through Abraham before they were even born, Through Abraham to Melchizedek.

Why? Because Melchizedek's priesthood was greater. Was greater Interesting. Interesting. So, some people say, well, the Melchizedek was like a type of Christ.

No father, no mother, no generation, no beginning, no end, this kind of thing. Some people say Melchizedek was Jesus in the Old Testament. Some commentaries will say, no, no, it's not. He was an actual guy, etcetera. That's not our discussion this morning.

Our discussion this morning is to understand that the Levitical priesthood, the priest paid tithes through Abraham to Melchizedek showing that he had the greater priesthood. Y'all y'all get that? That's really important. That is really important. I don't I don't want to put you in a coma but this this can this can do this.

This this could do that if it's not properly saying. And then notice this in verse seven, it says, without all contradiction, the less is blessed of the better. In other words, he got a blessing from Melchizedek, but they paid tithes to him saying that was better, that he was better. So you look at this and then the first 10 verses you look at the origins. Origin of the lineage and then the influence of this.

And so you have here this priesthood being being touted as better, the Melchizedek priesthood. Remember the keyword of Hebrews is better. Intrinsically better. That means it is by nature better. It's not it's not I I would just, you know, it's a nice, I like the color.

No. By nature, it's better. It's way better. In fact, we're going to find out how much better it is. How much better it is because notice notice verse 11.

22:56 The change of the priesthood and the law

There's another one coming. What would there need to be if Levitical priesthood could give you perfection? That is to say, wash away your sins and give you eternal life. What need would there be for another priest to come after the order of Melchizedek and not after the order of Levi. The law, the first five books, the Torah, the law couldn't do it.

What need would there be? Well, there wouldn't be a need if it could do it, and it can't. So, he's telling these Jewish believers that the law is finished with them. Okay. So, notice what he says in verse 12.

For the priesthood being changed. There was a made... There was made in the necessity of a change also of the law. Now, what's the big deal about this? Okay.

So, if you looked at the if you looked at the Greek on this one, and you looked at the Greek, some... One guy translated it this way. The law... If perfection, right? He says this, if therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood for under it, the people received the law, What further need was there for another priest should arise after the order of Melchizedek and not be called after the order of Aaron.

For the priesthood being, and one guy translated it this way, stopped. It really it really supplants one over the other. That's really what it literally means. One over the other. So, one guy translates it this way, the priesthood being stopped.

The Levitical priesthood being stopped. I've asked Mormon missionaries. Okay. So you have to understand. Their authority comes to these two missionaries sitting in front of me.

Their authority comes purely they have the the Levitical priesthood. They hold the Levitical priesthood and they they say it's the lesser priesthood and they also have the Melchizedek priesthood. And that gives them their authority to talk to me and have me become a Mormon, be baptized in the Mormon church. That's their authority. Right?

So, I go to right here to verse 11, 10, and 11, and 12 and I say to myself, I say, I asked him, when did the Levitical priesthood stop? When did it stop? And I've had I've had Mormon missionaries tell me when it stopped. They said it stopped at the cross. I said, right.

Absolutely 100% right. When Jesus Christ died on that cross and when he said, you know, father forgive them, he yielded up the spirit. Miraculous into the holiest of holies. It was no longer just for the guy without with blood, the high priest with blood, etcetera. No longer you could have direct access.

Why? Because Jesus Christ, his death, burial, and physical resurrection guarantee me a direct access before god. Isn't that amazing? Because of what he did, when did that take place? The cross.

Historically, accurately, it took place and he says in later in chapter 10, once for all. It doesn't continually happen. It did the mass is not if you know what I'm talking about, the sacrifice of the mass according to Roman Catholic theology is it's a continual sacrifice. No. It is not a continual sacrifice.

It is once for all. It is over. And it happened at the cross. So, the Levitical priesthood that condemns me and tells me that I cannot get to heaven without without fulfilling the law, it's done. I cannot do it this way.

Why? Because Jesus Christ fulfilled it. Totally. Isn't that fantastic? And my belief in him gives me everlasting life.

28:42 Eternal security and unbelievable news

And so we talked about this last month in the sense of, you know, that we have eternal security. You... The moment you believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, the moment you have eternal life never to be forfeited, Ever. And when he died on the cross and shed his blood and died on that cross, that veil was torn, direct indicating direct access to the throne of god, the holiest of holies. Right?

This is fantastic. This is unbelievable news and for the Jew to hear this again, the Jew to hear this again, understanding that their Messiah fulfilled that law that they could never fulfill. They couldn't do it by, not by works of righteousness which we have done but according to his mercy, he saved us and that mercy was found in the person of Jesus Christ on the cross. Okay. So, I had these Mormon missionaries.

So, I've just I've just just undercutted talking to these missionaries. I've just undercutted the first pillar and that first pillar for them is that they possess the Levitical priesthood. And if I show them that the priesthood stopped, they they actually told me that. That it stopped at the cross, they don't possess it. Because there's nothing to possess.

It's not there. Levitical priesthood is no longer in existence before God. In terms of making a man or a woman, boy or girl righteous before God, cannot do it, will not do it. So then, you go on. You go on.

Notice what it says. For this verse 12 again, for the priesthood being changed or stopped, there is made a necessity a change also of the law. Paul talks about the change... That change of the law. We live by the law of the spirit of god now, not by the law of sin and death.

We live not by the 10 commandments and you know, 10 commandments was just representative of the 613 commandments that god showed us. That's all the 10 commandments were just, you live by the 10 commandments. No, you're going to die by the 10 commandments and you're going to die by the 613 commandments because they don't ever justify a man. Never. Jesus Christ does though.

But our faith in him, our trust in that he did this for us, and that we have everlasting life. And then notice what he says, For it is evident... Oh, actually, okay, so verse 13, For he of whom these things are spoken pertains to another tribe. First tribe was what? Levi, right?

He's talking now about another tribe of which no man gave attendance at the altar. They were not Levitical priests. What tribe are we talking about? For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Judah of which tribe Moses spoke nothing concerning the priesthood. Why does he bring that up?

Because Jesus Christ was not a priest after the order of Levi. He was of the tribe of Judah. But he is a priest after the order of Melchizedek And that's exactly where he's going with this. He is a priest after the order of Melchizedek. Notice this, and yet it's far more evident after the likeness or similitude of Melchizedek, there arise another priest who is made not after the law of carnal commandment but after the power of endless life, the eternal son of god.

For he testifies, you are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek, Psalm one ten verse four. For this is verily an annulling of the commandment. In other words, it stopped and went over before the weakness and unprofitableness of it. For the law was made not made nothing perfect or mature. Couldn't make anybody righteous.

The law could never do this but the bringing in of a better hope did by which we draw near unto god in so much as as not without an oath, he was made priest. For those priests were talking about the Levitical priest and for those priests were made without an oath. But this an oath by him that said unto him, the Lord swore and will not repent. Thou art a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. And and so much was Jesus made a surety a better testament.

In other words, Jesus was made a priest after the order of Melchizedek. Now, this is huge and they truly were many priests because they were not allowed to continue by reason of death. They couldn't continue. They died. They had to get new ones.

Simple. Org chart. You know, Moshi's gone. Get this guy. Gotta get him.

He just died. We gotta get another priest. We gotta get new guys. We gotta get reason of death. They just keep dying on us.

But this man, verse 24, and here's the verse. Mark this in your Bibles. This man, talking about the Lord Jesus Christ, because he continues forever, and that's the Lord Jesus. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Has an unchangeable, King James, priesthood.

Anybody have anything different? Has an unchangeable priesthood. Now this is this is a killer because the Mormons say, well, we've... The Mormon missionaries will say, we got the Levitical priesthood, and we've got the Melchizedek priesthood. Verse 11 kills the Levitical Priesthood, and verse 24 is about to wipe out their version of the Melchizedek Priesthood.

He has an unchangeable Priesthood. And this is where the Greek really comes in through. It cannot literally means this, it cannot be transferred over. It cannot be transferred... Or unchangeable means cannot be given to anybody else.

Jesus is the only one who holds it and that is forever. So what have I just done or actually what is the word of God just done to Mormon theology? Wiped it out. They have no authority. Zero authority.

They can't come to me and baptize me because they don't have. They do not hold the Levitical priesthood and stopped at the cross. And they do not have the Melchizedek priesthood because it can't be given over to anybody else. Only Jesus holds it. He's not the spirit brother of Lucifer.

36:45 Jesus as prophet, priest, and king

Like, they're not getting a a thing on how to witness to Mormons because Mormonism wasn't in the... In vogue at the time. What they were getting was the law is finished. Turn your eyes on Jesus. He's the only one who holds the Melchizedek priesthood and it's forever.

So, when we say about Jesus Christ, he's the prophet, priest, and king. This is what this is exactly talking about. Prophet, priest, and king. Now, we are a kingdom of priests, the Bible teaches. No questions about it.

But not the same in that as the lord Jesus. Like what you said today, the breaking bread, we're different. We're not at all the same as Jesus Christ. He's the god man. We're not god men.

We do not have. We, the Bible says, we partake of the divine nature in first or in second Peter, I believe it is. We partake of the divine nature but that's only in the communicable attributes that god can give. Love, joy, peace, long suffering, all those attributes that can he can communicate but there are attributes only god holds. The three omnis, omniscience, omnipresence, omnipower, omnipotence, omni holiness.

I mean, there's a, you know, there's he's unique. There's an there are attributes that he cannot give over We do not we do not partake in that in those. So we don't become gods per se. Mormon theology teaches, however, that you do. You can.

You can become a god. Mormon males can become a god, can go to another planet, inhabit that planet just like Adam God did for the for the world, and then come down and pop a promulgate from that one big soul. These little souls, Mormon souls coming out. That's why they traditionally have big families. Get those Mormon souls into the world.

If we were to examine and we don't have the time for sure, you would be... Well, my hair curled and left. It did. It went went... It was gone.

But this is forever. Wherefore he is able, notice this, because he is the only one who holds this Melchizedek priesthood. Guess, look at the next verse. That's verse 24. Look at the next verse and you can get excited about this.

You can get excited about, wherefore he is able also to save to the uttermost that come unto God by him seeing he ever lives and makes intercession for them. So you're... You gave your testimony this morning and that, you know, praise God for that. We all have testimonies if we know Jesus as our personal savior. And the testimony is not how wicked I was.

The testimony is how great he is. To save a sinner like me. And so maybe you did drugs, maybe you were an individual that was really a big, how's this word for you? Scallywag type of person and all that kind of stuff. The testimony is not how bad you were.

The testimony is how great he can save. And the self righteous individual, the person that thinks that they're better than somebody else, is far worse than the guy who's doing drugs or playing around, that kind of thing. Far worse. Self righteousness is as filthy rags in the sight of God, and Jesus Christ is the one who washes us clean. Save to the uttermost.

I talked... I was hitchhiking one day and I got picked up by this guy, and I put my bible between us. It was a a bench, you know, it wasn't bucket seat car, And I didn't have a car at that time, and I put it there and he goes, oh, you're one of those. And I'm going, oh, oh, okay. Rut row.

This is when I first got saved. Well, turns out this guy picking me up because he's a homosexual and he wanted to, know, he wanted wanted me. So, I got close to the door as far as possible and started really witnessing to this guy and he tells me this stuff. I'm too bad. I am so bad.

There's no way that god could ever forgive me. There's no way that I could ever have my sin. There's no way. I am so wicked. It's unbelievable.

I said, he can save. Doesn't matter what your sin is. To the utter most. He can wash you clean, wash me clean. This is what Paul is telling the saints at this very carnal church of Jewish Christians who are being wooed back to the law.

What Paul is saying, the law will never do it for you, only Jesus Christ. He saves to the uttermost. He's the one that fulfilled the law. He's the one that gives us direct direct access to the father. He later tells us this.

42:57 Drawing near to the throne of grace

You are a needy person. Well, that's built off of a self sufficiency, that thinking. You know, if you're thinking, well, yeah, you're really you're really needy, Chris. Well, guess what? Sorry about this one.

You are too. And if you don't think so, you're in deep trouble. You are. You're in deep trouble because you have a self righteousness that you are trying to... We're we're terrible.

We're far worse than we can ever imagine. We dress it up and rationalize it right out the door, don't we? I'm not as bad as this guy. I'm not as bad as that guy. Wherein the truth is, we're the same.

Same as Jeffrey Dahmer. Same as Adolf Hitler. We look at those guys and we say they're they're disgusting. Look in the mirror. Before god, before god, you're disgusting, filthy rags but god so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son.

In that disgusted, sinfulness of my heart, loved me and sent his son to pay for my sin. Wow. Wow. Father, thank you. Thank you for this and thank you for your love that is shown in the person of Jesus Christ who paid the penalty we richly deserve to pay and he paid it in full.

He fulfilled the law. The law could not do and what the law could not do, God sent forth his son, made of a woman, made under the law, to redeem them that were under the law. And we were and are. But it's Jesus Christ who gives us relief. Thank you.

Ask you, Lord, to help us to live by this grace, not only to get saved by it, but to live in it because we can come boldly before your throne and ask for anything. Ask for anything in your will and we ask these things lord. Bless today. Bless Carl Reeder as he is in the hospital. Minister to him right now.

Bless the situation in that and help him and help his dear wife and lord lord god, there are other needs that we have here that are represented by us. And we ask you that you would hear us. We ask these things in Jesus name. Amen. Thanks for having me folks.
