0:01 Introduction and the word 'therefore'
We give you again Christ's name. Amen. He just started to refer... Recording. You can flip it over if you like.
Throw drill. Get a bible up or a phone. You can cheat with phone if you want. Oh, Nancy's saying no. I want somebody to read a verse, not quote a verse.
Read a verse of their device or their bill that has the word therefore in it. Are you set? Charge. Who could hear? What'd she say?
You're child of God. What verse? Second five. Second Corinthians five? Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is the new creation.
That one? No? 21. 21. He made him therefore him who knew no sin to be sinned for.
That's a good one. Thirty two zero. Can't hear. I even got it in. I can't hear.
And it's coming out now because I have no back. That's the weakness of the flesh. Why the word therefore? I had the privilege when I was first saved to sit under the Bible teaching of an older gentleman. Name was John Duffield Ulrich.
His father was George Levi Ulrich. His father helped put together a reference system for the Schofield Bible. He was a great evangelist. He was a minister in a church, once convicted by scripture of the... A New Testament simplicity of gathering to the Lord, he left the church and lived the rest of his life by faith and raised his son that way.
George did. His name was John Depp. You'll meet him someday. He's been with the Lord since 1975. When I was a young preacher, We were studying the book of Romans.
I don't know why we're in Romans today. I may not... I don't know what Ray spoke about last week because it's not on your website, but I have listened to the message on your website. I understand you're going through a process. You know, praise the Lord for the work that he's doing.
But this man, John Duffield Aldrich, taught me whenever you come across the word therefore in scripture, you stop what you're doing, and you figure out why it's therefore. What's there in that passage that requires a therefore? What has God said there culminate culminate with the idea that therefore? Because this is all true. Therefore.
K. There are some great ones, as you know. Romans has the most, therefore, in the New Testament. 21 times, the book of Romans says there. Some of them are great that you should know by heart.
Five one. Therefore, being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. You ever gonna memorize the air force? That's a good one. How about chapter eight?
I would think chapter eight probably has a therefore that's more often quoted by Christians in this generation than any other. Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Hallelujah. We can sin and get away with it. No?
Yeah. I agree. Why do people love that? Why do people love that? There's no condemnation.
Because they know that there should be condemnation because they're constantly reminded that their walk with the Lord is less than it should be. Let's just leave it at that. Don't wanna be negative. You know me? I don't like being negative.
Unless the occasion calls for it, and this occasion certainly doesn't looking out and seeing all your smiling faces thus far. Alright? Always start with a smile. It's good for us. K?
5:15 Transition from God's wonder to practical living
Well, when you go from eight one to twelve one, you have this huge declaration of the wonder of God and all that he's done in all of history. And his judgments aren't searchable, and his ways are past finding out. He's absolutely an amazing god who's right on schedule even with COVID, delivered to this planet right on schedule for purposes only known to him. Absolutely. You think he's lost control of the planet?
He's the planet spinner. Don't slow down. He keeps the whole mass spinning at the right speed so none of those fall off. He's amazing, God. His judgments are fast finding out.
They're unsearchable. They're unsearchable. And he goes through those chapters, deals with some hard issues for the Christians at Rome. Remember how the Christians became Christians at Rome? Anybody tell you, or you already know?
We don't know. Paul wrote this letter before he was there. Course he met at Cullen and Priscilla, Acts 18, because the emperor Claudius kicked all... Asked all the Jews due to the commotion they were causing to leave Rome, the emperor Claudius, as recorded in the book of Acts. But he had not been here himself.
In fact, his desire as he writes, and you get to the end of the book is to go to Rome on his way to Spain. But this we know about the Christians of Rome. Historically, there were Roman Jews and Gentiles at the day of Pentecost. That's Acts chapter two, isn't it? Jews and Jewish converts from Rome were at the day of Pentecost, were in Jerusalem when the Holy Spirit came into the world to gather up all those believers who are gonna be saved and put them in the body of Christ and indwell them.
Indwell them. That started the whole church. That was the birthday of the church. It's been growing ever since. So we have to, I suggest you believe that one of the gifts given to the apostles was the gift of Latin because the testimony of those gathered is we all heard in our own tongue the wonderful works of God.
Now Latin's a pretty tough language. Hard now because nobody speaks. You can still read it, learn certain phrases. You probably know some. At that time, Roman historians say there are roughly 13 synagogues in an area of Rome called Tetraviri.
And those converts on the day of Pentecost came back to Rome and started evangelizing. People got saved. Confusion. Commotion. Claudius wasn't upset at Christians.
Claudius was upset that every synagogue once a week had a commotion, a civil disturbance because the Jews were resisting the gospel. And, therefore, he didn't like any civil unrest, and so get all the Jews out. Of course, they didn't all leave. We know that. Priscilla Priscilla, And then Paul went back.
Well, Paul eventually went there. We don't really know a lot, so this is Paul by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit writing his book to people he's never met. When I come here and speak, I know most of you or some of you. Most might be a bit of a stretch. Some of you.
And so I have experience, and I know, you know, based on experience, there's some things that are probably more acceptable to say to this group in Westlake than others. Gotta be honest. Years ago, it was easier to speak here because I knew everybody better. Now it's a little more complicated because I have to look through the audience to figure out, I don't know that person. Can I say that or not?
And I'll just remind you, brother, it says that it's not important that you hear what I say. It's important that Jesus Christ speaks to you. As your heart is open to the spirit of God speaking to you, not the... Not man, not man's voice, not man's eloquence, not man's words. But if you will benefit from being here this morning, it will be because Jesus Christ speaks to you.
As Todd reminded us from John 10 at the Lord's Supper, I sheep hear my voice. Do you? Is that your experience regularly, or is that just the experience you had the day you were saved? I heard his voice one day. Now I'm saved.
Sadly, that might be true for a lot of believers. I heard him one day really convicting me inside. He was speaking to me, and I knew he wanted to save me. So I opened up, and he saved me. I prayed and talked to him, and he saved me.
And I'm gloriously saved. I haven't heard him since. That's not the shepherd we're talking about. Sadly, that's the shepherd that a lot of people prefer. The safety that Todd described, they're in my hands.
My hands are in my father's den. Nobody can get them out. Wonderful place to be as compared to Hebrews 10. It's a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Verse 31.
Falling into the hands of God or being picked up, same location, different experience. You don't wanna fall into the hands of the living God in a condition of rebellion, rejection, refusal. My sheep hear my voice. They follow me. I know them.
I know them. That's the experience you want to make sure you know and enjoy the wonder of the security of being in his hands. Now I'll tell you quite honestly, brother and sisters, those hands sometimes of the Lord Jesus Christ have me by the throat because I'm a rebellious delinquent by nature. I refuse at times to give in. Jacob wrestled and had his hip touched.
His hands are always choking me, like, ready to choke the life out of me if I don't give in. I like that. I like that he has me tight. I like the sense that even at the point of the resistance, he has a good grip on me. I don't wanna feel like I'm not in touch even if he's doing all the touching.
Right? And amazing before that verse, you remember these words the Lord Jesus Christ said to the crowd of people who were listening to him while they walked in Solomon's colonnade on that day, which was probably Hanukkah, the feast of dedication. You don't believe me because you're not my sheep. Can you imagine Christ saying that to a group of people? You're not my sheep.
That's why you don't believe. There might be an unbeliever in here right now sitting here listening to me. I'm telling you, you don't believe because you're not his sheep. The key is... Please, the key to this issue is if you know you don't believe and you know, therefore, you're not his sheep, then ask him how to become one.
Put your hand up and say, what do I gotta do to be one? And listen to the wonder of the Lord Jesus Christ graciously say to you, whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. Whoever includes wherever, includes in whatever condition, whatever language, whatever is about them, whatever circumstance they're in, whoever has so many connected issues that make the promise so wonderful, whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. And we don't know much more about Rome other than but Paul You can go there and visit. You could see things that will tell you about history, but I'm not gonna take you there.
15:23 Assigned passage: Romans 12:9-21
That's why I raised it up there. Yes. I don't know. Maybe he did Romans twelve one two eight last week, did he? No.
No? So I have this assignment. I'm happy to do it. I like the passage. It will be hard for me to complete the passage.
Just saying. But, nevertheless, let me read it. You follow along. Romans chapter nine starting at... Or chapter 12.
Sorry. Starting at verse nine. Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil. Cling to what is good.
Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord's people who are in need.
Practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you. Bless and do not curse. Rejoice for those who rejoice. Mourn for those who mourn.
Live with harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone.
If it be possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with every Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God's wrath for it is written. It is mine to avenge. I will repay, saith the Lord. On the contrary, if your enemy is hungry, feed him. If he is Thursi, give him something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. You either get stuck on the one you're good at. I already do that. Giving you then some liberty to ignore the others because you got one down or get stuck on the worst jet you're at and start to unplug from the message because I don't wanna hear anymore because I already am acknowledging I'm not good at these things.
Either way. Shall we just put our hands up that we're really not good at all of this? We're just not good at it. All these rapid fires, I mean, there's just too many to think about. There's just...
Wow. I only deal with one. One verse. Three clauses. Verse 11.
Never be lacking in zeal. Keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Alright? Rephrase this. Very clear.
And it seems to me that this is the most possibly ambiguous one that you just couldn't put your finger on. You can see people losing their patience. You can see people's hypocritical insistence that they love you when you know they're gritting their teeth when they're saying it. Yeah. You can sense they don't love you, but they have to because God told them.
It's obligatory. So those things are sensible. You can sense them. You can sense people who aren't joyful. You know who shows up to pray and who doesn't.
You know who's not faithful in prayer. You know that there's a lot of people here, probably maybe not as many as I'm thinking, but maybe less, considerably less, who just aren't hospitable. Look around. Have you been to everybody's home for a meal? Everybody.
Not one person. You've been to everybody. And hospitality certainly is not the issue. I'm just saying that these quick fire injunctions, these rapid fire, do this do this from a man inspired by the Holy Spirit to write to a group of Christians in Rome who are struggling because they know the commotion that they've caused. And because they're more and more commotion about the synagogue, guess what?
These Christians are gonna start meeting on another day privately in a home. And after that, they're gonna go underground. I mean, it it... It's a whole series of progression. But here's the spirit of God directing some very simple thoughts to Christians who need established in practice, not just responsibility to God.
I beseech you, therefore, present your bodies as a living sacrifice to him. Yeah. That's what you owe God, therefore. Based on all that he's done for you, you therefore owe him to present yourself. But now present yourselves to each other.
Present yourselves in a practical pattern of behavior towards each other and here are the point after point after point after point instructions the areas of your life that need touch by this practical instruction. Alright? 11 is the hardest one, in my opinion. That's IMO, if you know the text language. In my opinion.
Your opinion might be different. Hallelujah if you have one. This is mine. Never be lacking in zeal. Keep your spiritual fervor serving the Lord.
22:25 The meaning of 'lazy' and 'zeal'
Busy with what I gave you. Busy busy with what I gave you. You're not busy with what I gave you. You're lazy. That's what was.
Not used very often. Lazy. Oh, pretty sharp. Never be lazy in your zeal for the Lord. I wanna remind you of what the Lord Jesus Christ...
How the Lord Jesus Christ responded to people who accused him of healing a man at the Pool Of Bethesda on the Sabbath day. My father works unceasingly, so do I. That is my absolute, and you can write it down if you ever would be interested. The absolute favorite verse of mine. To know that God works unceasingly, rested on the seventh day, we know.
Hasn't rested since, has he? Hasn't rested since. And Jesus Christ, right along, I'm porter. I don't take days off. I don't take days off.
And why is that so important to me that I can consider the potential that I can be lazy spiritually? Lazy spiritually. I have to consider this potential, else I wouldn't be told to avoid it. Never be lazy spiritually. Think with me about the Lord's Prayer for a sec.
The minute you get past the acclamation and the acknowledgment of God as father and hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, The very first request in the Lord's prayer outline is give me bread. Give us our daily bread. Unfortunately, way back in the garden, he said to man, you're gonna get your bread by the sweat of your brow. How gracious of the Lord Jesus Christ to come in and say, you should look to the father for your breath. So do we work for it or don't?
Do we get it or not? We live in a society that I'm sure many of you realize that there are Christians quoting scripture about if a man doesn't work, neither should he eat. Can rile us up, that whole concept that there's a lot of free handouts in America. Meanwhile, everybody who is working has less and less of what they should get from work because they've taken more and more to give to the people who won't or can't work. Whatever.
And I'm not even trying to fix that. I'm just saying that God then authorized Paul to say something directly to a younger brother and say, if a brother doesn't work, he shouldn't eat. Or you tell him to say, give us for daily bread. Now you say I have to work to get it. And there's a...
26:16 Spiritual application: If you don't work, you shouldn't eat
If you don't work spiritually, maybe you shouldn't eat spiritually. Maybe. I'm just suggesting that's a principle. If you're lazy spiritually, and we'll get to what that might look like practically, why should you eat? It's one thing to have bread and have a lot of it.
The question will always be, do we benefit from it? Do you benefit from the bread? Is your life improved? Have you taken the bread of life? Does it show?
Does it show? Now two weeks ago, Todd was in Luke 12. Everybody remember? Yeah? Luke 12?
No? Wasn't it two weeks ago? May 26? One of the verses he read was verse 42. Who then is the faith and wise manager whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time?
Give who? The servants. The servants. So here's a picture of Jesus Christ explaining that I want people involved with feeding who? The servants.
The servants. The people who are working. People who are occupied, people who are doing something. It's long, too long that we're sedentary, beloved, that we sit back and expect a meal. Just feed us.
No. No. In contrary to that principle, if you don't work, you shouldn't eat. And I'm not suggesting that would be deliberate that somebody would come in here just waiting for something good from scripture to really benefit them, and God's saying, holy. You've been lazy all week.
You show up for forty minutes. You want somebody to feed you a meal when you do nothing spiritually? You're lazy spiritually. You're gonna hear the same words that that starving person, that servant is gonna hear, but it's gonna benefit them. You're not getting anything out of it.
That's God's doing, that you get nothing out of his word. It's not your doing. Oh, you can blame Satan for stealing a seed if that's where you wanna go. But I'm convinced, brothers and sisters, we live in a situation amongst Christians where people are starving. Why?
Well, as the proverb said, the full soul loaths honeycomb... Honeycombs, but to the hungry soul, every bitter thing is sweet. And when you come here, really, how hungry are you? And then I'm gonna ask you, why are you hungry? Why are you hungry?
Not just desirous of a feast. I wanna hear good things that'll benefit me. Is your soul hungry for the bread of life? Right? And you have to recognize as with your body, your hunger is different.
You wake up hunger. How many people wake up hungry? Can't wait to eat. Some people wake up. They're not hungry.
Don't wanna eat for two hours. Therefore, we have brunch. They can't eat immediately. Other people are different. But how about if you took a 10 mile hike?
Would you want something when you're done? Probably. Why? Because you've depleted your body. Because you were, what, moving.
You're exercising. You're doing something. And it would be those people, those movers, who would find the meal most beneficial because they have a realization that I have to replenish because I've depleted my spiritual strength. I need to be around other Christians who can build me up. That's the perp that the church should be self, what, edifying, building us up, replenishing the spiritual energy that we as we go out and live in the world that we know and so crooked, perverse.
31:29 The meaning of 'servant' and 'therapeutic'
They say he wasn't a Christian. Whether he was or not, it's not the issue. Most people say he discredits Christ because he met other supposedly Christians and didn't testify. But I don't find that to be a valid issue with Philo. Philo talks about a group of people who live very separate lives who are called the therapeutic.
These are people who are occupied with the health of other people. Right? It's where our word therapeutic comes from, by the way. That's the word used in scripture for the servants in Luke 12. Those servants are...
And it's only used three times in both gospels where this is stolen one other time, where there was a healing. Are people whose energy is spent on the welfare and well-being of other people. Alright? And I would ask you as a believer, isn't that what we all are? We're really concerned about the well-being, the sole condition of everybody around and that's irregardless if they're saved or unsaved.
We're building up the souls around us that are saved because we know we should, and we're looking to see the others who aren't saved to be saved so their soul can be made alive and come into life with Christ through the power of his spirit. And that's where the word therapy comes from. And talked about it. A whole group of people that that were called the therapeutic, the therapeutic one. And I suggest to you that's who Christ is talking about.
Those servants are those people who are engaged in the condition of other people, not in a judgmental way, not in I wanna tell you what you're doing wrong way, and if you do this, it should be better way. I'm ministering to people, finding a way to minister to people. And the Lord Jesus said in Luke 12, those people eat first. Those people eat first. And when those people come into a meeting where they've spent the whole six days doing that, they have one day off now where they can come and be around other little Christians who are on fire for the Lord.
What a meal is theirs. What a meal. No harshness. Not hard to be loving then, is it? To sense everybody loving on you.
And we're all in this together, beloved. And if not, then I invite you to. Don't be a lazy Christian. That's Romans twelve eleven. Don't be lazy.
The other half of that is another Greek word that's very interesting. How many people have so far during COVID had to go into a place that you had to have your temperature checked? Yeah. I mean... Yeah.
It's... You're, like, scary. Right? That's a scary moment because they're invading my hip hop. Why...
It's hip hop. You can't allow them to know if I got a temperature. Am I right or wrong? So here's somebody telling me I gotta take a public temperature everybody in line behind me, and they're gonna tell if it says green or red. You can't...
I'm sorry. You can't... And so you stand there like you're just like, where's the rapture when you want? Yeah. How would you like that at the door here?
That invasion into your spiritual life. What's your temperature today? Because the second half of this verse means keep your spiritual life boiling. That's 210 degrees. Don't keep 98.6.
This word there for zeal is boil, used in other Greek writings by doctors to describe how to make certain medicines. You boil it. That's this word. Only used once or twice in all of scripture. How does that work?
Boil it. Who came in this morning boiling? This is it. Thanks for your honesty. Oh, one hand went up.
Who wants a temperature check on the way in? Nobody. Of course not. Would Jesus Christ not allow your entrance if you were below two ten? We know him better than that, don't we?
Look at our experience. We're here anyway. We just said, we're not two ten, and we're still here. Come on to me, all you who are burdened and heavy laden. I will give you rest.
I'll keep you, boy. What did John say? He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. Fire. Oh, you think, well, that's Acts two, tongues of fire?
I don't think that's what that is. I think that's some passion. That's some passion. It was Jesus Christ who walked into the upper room that night in which you betrayed and said, I have a great desire to eat this Passover with you. That's passionate.
It was Jesus Christ as written of in John 13. I've loved you to the end. I didn't lose any passion over you. Jesus Christ who approached Jerusalem and wept in Luke's gospel. Yeah.
He had a lot of passion. No doubt about it. It was Peter who, when he was cold, stood outside around the what? Fire. Why?
It's cold. Man made fire. Unfortunately, I'm sorry that oftentimes I find myself like Peter I'm doing now. I'm just trying to stand around some fire that was built by, in fact, Christ's enemy, but I'm just out there trying to stay warm. I'm just trying to stay warm.
Poor man. Of course, Jesus Christ said in Matthew 24, and I know I'm picking up the face. I'm sorry, poor. But I do wanna complete this one verse. Because iniquity abounds, because there's an increase in sin, the love of many will grow cold.
And that's just... Need to admit that that we are so occupied with our sinfulness sometimes and the fun of our sin, you know, as God recorded through Jeremiah. Listen. My people are in a deplorable condition. This is the eighth chapter, loose translation.
And all the people who are taking care of them, they dress their wounds by saying peace. Be at peace. Be at peace. Be at peace. There is no peace.
My people are so deplorable when I tell them how bad they are, they don't even blush. There's no flushed cheeks in my presence when I tell them how bad they are. You know where the flushness comes from, don't you? The sudden change of blood pressure. The heat that suddenly generated to the head because there was a conviction in the heart that something's not right.
So flush. That's a bad condition for Christians to be in. We can be in God's presence and never blush. You can't make us blush. We're not gonna feel guilty because there is no condemnation therefore.
Brothers and sisters, we have to know when we're not boiling. We have to do something about it. We just... We can't be accepting that. Okay.
40:20 Four thoughts on being filled with the Spirit
Number one, what I said, be filled with the spirit. Being filled with the spirit is something that you have to not just imagine. You have to actually, in your quiet time to start the day before the feet hit the ground. Lord, here I am. Here's my body.
It says to be filled with your spirit. I want to be filled. I don't mean to jump out of bed and speak in tongues. I mean to have the power to live for you and to follow you. My sheep know my voice.
They follow me. If you don't follow, there's only one reason. It's self willed. Takes the spirit of God to defeat that. Number two, the constant motion.
Constant motion. How many hours have you been awake this week? I don't want the answer. How many of those hours have any amount of minutes in it when you were spiritually engaged in the well-being of another believer. What?
You're not gifted? That's not your gift. That's what you wanna say. Move. Motion.
We know that body generates its own heat when it moves. When it moves, do something. However you think it's insignificant, find one Christian you can read a chapter with, pray as one sentence prayer with, call them, text them, FaceTime them, Zoom them. Do something spiritually on the behalf of somebody else. Not for yourself.
It'll generate heat. Start the incinerator. Start the incinerator in your life. What do I mean by that? You drive by the road.
People having a garage sale. People having this. People having that redecorating, refurbishing, re everything. They got a dumpster in their driveway. Everybody's throwing stuff in their dumpster.
You seen that? Every Christian should have one. If not, you have an incinerator. What's that mean? That means that the wood hand stubble that Paul talks about in first Corinthians three, the things that you have in your life right now that you know are not worthy of the Lord, they're not eternal.
They're not leaving with you. And I'm not talking about possessions. I'm talking about things in your life. They're gonna burn in fire as described. Start the incinerator now.
Start getting rid of the things in your life that you know are not worthy of. Put them right in the dumpster. Put them in the incinerate. Get the fire going to get rid of things. Let the fire purge your life.
And the last, of course, is insulation. Bob used to do a welcome to 5AM on Instagram. Dead winter. Always stressed out warm. Insulated.
If you're not boiling, beloved, you're gonna lose more heat till you insulate. Keep that which remains. Hang on to what you got. Hang on to what you got. Let's get back to the phrase we used back in the seventies when we talked about other Christians.
That person's on fire for the Lord. That person is on fire for the Lord. That's an old fashioned phrase. I know that. I'm dating myself into the seventies.
That's what we need, beloved. That's one verse. Never be lazy in zeal and keep your spiritual life boiling, serving the Lord. Not dissembling. Don't serve the assembly.
Serve the Lord. Let's close in prayer. Sorry, Roger. I couldn't do them all. I told them I wasn't gonna do them all.
Father, we thank you for your goodness to us, for your patience, Lord, that you display towards us every day, the mercy that you show us by not consuming us. It would be... It failed so often, and yet here we are left on this planet for a purpose the midst of a pandemic where people are afraid to die, Lord, looking to man for security. Give us strength to be bold in the gospel. Give us strength to be ministers to those about us.
We ask that you do so and dismiss us in the power of your might in the name of our great savior, Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
