Purposefully Serving God — 2 Chronicles 2
7 passages in this message
Fred Scott uses the biblical account in 2 Chronicles 2 to explore the concept of purposeful service to God. He draws out examples from the lives of Daniel and Joseph, and the collaboration between Paul and Apollos, to illustrate different facets of this purpose. The message concludes with a call to pray for those involved in ministry and their work.

0:00 Introduction and personal background
I'd like to thank you for inviting me to come for the one that I displaced. It was a case I've been out to our daughters, Naomi and Keith Kaiser, out in Pennsylvania and I'm heading back to Iowa. So it was kind of like, this is kind of the only time. We like to enjoy the time to come and break bread with people here. It's about a seven hour drive from their place and so it's a nice stopping place for us on the way through if we have opportunities.
Just a little bit of background on myself. I grew up in Central Iowa. My wife was about 70 miles away. I still consider that Central Iowa too. I grew up on a farm.
Went to Iowa State University and that's where we met and during that time though that it was far as I know as I think back, I never heard the gospel of the lord Jesus Christ all the time I was growing up. I was religious. I went to church often. But I didn't hear about the Lord Jesus Christ. But when I went to college, the Lord has his ways of arranging things so that I was in the right place to be invited into a Bible study and learn of the Lord, believed on the Lord Jesus Christ at that time.
Well, we graduated, spent a couple of years on a farm, then I went to work in Eastern Iowa on a research farm for a feed company. Kent Feeds, let's see, we're in Ohio now, so they do cover some of this area. And I took care of beef cows most of that time. Since then I've retired and we've started Teamworkers Abroad. I'll talk about that in a little bit.
But as I've been on trips and I found something I'd like to bring to you from the word of God this morning. That has to do with the idea of purposing to serve God. And I was sitting at a concert down in Mexico, and it was in Spanish, and I don't speak Spanish. And so, you know, your mind tends to drift a little bit. But I pulled out, I've got one of those apps on my phone, you know, and I started looking at the Bible.
In particular, in the Darby translation, speaks of men that purpose to serve God in various ways. There's only six of them. So I'd like to go through those fairly quickly to look at those. So if you go to two Chronicles chapter two, we'll start out there. And just background as you come into Chronicles and two Chronicles is where Solomon is taking over the leadership of the nation of Israel.
And in that process, then he starts to set out what he is going to do. In chapter two and verse one, it says, Now Solomon decided or he purposed to build a house for the name of the Lord and a royal palace for himself. Now you want to think about that a little bit. You know it takes some work to do those things, to purpose to do that. In other words, you've got to come up with a plan.
You know, how are you going to design this building? You've got to come up with people that are willing to work with it. You've got to have those who will commit themselves to the work and you have to prepare for it. And so those are the things that you need to do if you want to build something. Well, it's the same way in life.
If you want to build a life, you're gonna have to do the same thing. You're gonna have to set out and plan for it. I find, as I look back, there were a lot of times when I coasted into things and the Lord was gracious in providing me a way to coast the right direction. But we need to be careful that we don't try to coast into our Christian life. We need to purpose do that.
We need to say, what is it that I need to do? What plans do I need to make so that I might be useful for the Lord? It might be going into accounting. It might be going into the medical. It might be taking piano lessons so you can be used to play the piano.
There's a lot of things we need to think about. How can I be used of the Lord and go those directions using the talents and the gifts the Lord has given you? And then you need to just say, I am willing to participate. And so those are the things that we look at this and see that you come up from the example of Solomon. Now let's go over to the book of Daniel.
4:24 Daniel's purpose to serve God
And I'm glad to see some of the young people in the crowd because near as I can pick up from the commentators, they tend to think that Daniel was probably in the neighborhood of 17 years old when he went to Babylon. And as he went there, this is a young man that has been taken out of his home country. They're trying to destroy all of his culture. They change his name. He's in a foreign language.
We hear nothing of his parents and so he's probably... They have probably been killed in the process. And so he is completely alone except for, you know, some of his own friends around there. Now when you think about that, you find that here's a young man that purposed to serve his God. The first thing he wanted to do, he wanted to be pure.
You know, if you're going to serve God, you need to have a pure life. There's a lot of times we can make dumb decisions and we can do it to the effect that it will ruin the rest of our life. So we have to be very careful, and particularly young people, you need to be careful what you're doing in life and how you're following people. We want to look at Daniel and see how he follows or he doesn't follow the people that are around him. So he purposed to serve his God.
He's gonna have a pure life, and then he he decided that he would be... I had a nice word for that and it's written down here. A purposeful diet. That's what it was. A purposeful diet.
He knew how God wanted him to serve him. In other words, as a Jew, he needed to have a particular diet and he says, alright, I need to do this. And I think most of us are aware that in Babylon, they would offer the meat to the idols first and then offer to them as food and he did not want to participate in that. And so he he did that. And then what I would say that he did not want to pander to the world.
You notice, he didn't want to do what everybody else was doing. I'm sure that a lot of the young people as they were around him, they were more than him that had been taken into captivity, that they would say, oh, let's let's kinda go along with the crowd. Let's follow what they're doing. Let's try to to fit in here even as Jeremiah told us to fit into the country. Daniel says, no.
I want to serve my god. And I think that's the challenge. Do we want to serve God with our whole heart? Do we want a purpose to set our our our lifestyle that it is different and people are gonna notice and they're gonna say, don't you really want to do it this way? They're gonna ask us to do those things.
And so here's a young man. They have purposes to serve him his God. He purposes not to defile himself. Well then I'd like to go over to chapter three. One more time talking about these young men.
Here with chapter three, of course, is the one where you've got the three young men that choose to stand up, and we know that they're gonna get tossed into the fiery furnace. That's the whole object. But what I find interesting about this particular incident is that the ungodly people know what they're purposing to do in their life. We'll get down to verse 14. Just to kind of break into the middle of it, you know, they have they've now stood up out there on the plane and they're drugging before the king and the king's trying to be nice to them.
Nebuchadnezzar responded and said to them, is it true or do you purpose Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego that you do not serve my gods or worship the golden image that I have set up? See, the first thing we'd say about this is that the ungodly people know your plan. They know what you intend to do and in fact, I find it interesting that there are times and places and circumstances that the ungodly people know better what you ought to be doing than what the Christians know how to do. They know your plan. They know what you're proposing to do.
These guys were proposing to stand up and serve their god and not worship and bow down to the idols. And I find it interesting. The question that needs to come to us, are we standing in such a way that the ungodly people around us know where we stand? In other words, we are out here in this world. We have neighbors.
We have, work people. We may have schoolmates. Do they know what you purpose to do in life? Do they know that you are purposing to serve God? To me, it's always a good question.
Do they know that you're going to be here this morning? I live in a nice small town in Eastern Iowa, I did, And it was kind of like I didn't feel it necessary to lock the house, but I would lock it on Sunday morning because I hoped every neighbor in that area knew I would be gone. You wanna steal something? Come Sunday morning at 11:00. I'll be gone.
Because I purpose to be with god's people at that time of the day. Now, any other time, I might pop in there. You can't depend upon me for not being in my house. But do the ungodly people in your life know that you choose to serve God? That's what these young men were doing.
And then again, they would resist the pressure. We know that story, how they would stand up and say, we don't know whether God will deliver us, but we're not gonna serve your gods. And they would not bow to that pressure, and we need to be able to do that. Now what kind of pressure did they have? Well, you see the question here was, will you serve the golden image that I've set up?
We say that's fine. That's not my problem. Do we have golden images today? You see, I think we do. It's not something that sat out here in some parking lot that we can come to and worship and bow down to but I think we have golden images in our society.
Several of them that I would think of is that perhaps it's having a a beautiful house and a wonderful landscaping or the best car on the block or maybe I have the best education or I I'm climbing the corporate ladder And it doesn't matter what they might be but it amounts to, are you willing to serve that idol rather than serve God? That's the question. That's the challenge. Am I willing to say no, I will not take this promotion because it will take me away from serving god and his people. So, we need to be very careful that we don't go into our own ways.
11:49 Joseph's purpose to be a righteous man
And it says, Joseph, her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her plan or repurposed to send her away secretly. One of those things that says about this and it's it's a wonderful testimony and they said, Joseph is a righteous man. Now, I don't think that he coasted into that. I think he's taken some of these principles we've already talked about with with David and or Daniel and and Daniel's friends. And Solomon with the idea of planning and he has purposed to be a righteous man.
You know it takes it takes planning, it takes thinking to purpose to be a righteous man. How do we do that? Well, you've got to sit down and say, what does it take to be a righteous person? You know what it takes to be a righteous person? You know, we've got to read the word of God.
We've got to gather together with other believers to be encouraged. You know, there's a lot of things that are given to us that we need to do, but it helps us to become a righteous person. It's one of those things. But to do that, you've got to study the word of God. You've got to spend time in prayer if you're gonna be a man that is a righteous person.
And the challenge I would throw out you... To you is something that I learned in college, early on as I was early in my Christian life, is that I would needed a time with the Lord. I called it a quiet time back then. Well, how do you do that in college? If you're familiar with college life at all, you know you you stay up late and you, you know, you spend all your time studying or socializing.
You know what I found out you had to do? You had to set that alarm earlier than you wanted to get up to make it to class. And that's how you purpose to become a righteous person. You say, alright, I want to set aside some time to do something in my life. And how am I going to do it?
We have to figure it out. One of those things that I always ask when I go visit people, you know, typically I will come early and I'll stay over Saturday night to Sunday morning like I did this time. One of the questions that I always come up with, when do we have to leave to get to the meeting on time? That's the question. When do you leave to get to the meeting on time?
Because I want to know what it takes to get there. I purpose to be to the meeting on time. You know, it isn't a case that you get up on Sunday morning and say, well, let's see. I wonder if I want to go to meeting this morning. We need to think about this.
We purposed to get here. We had the purpose to, you know, back the car out of the driveway. One of those things that I share occasionally, and Annie is one of the fellows I knew because he lived across the street from me. He had three cute little girls. One of the girls comes over there and she was, I don't know, six or eight.
One Wednesday afternoon, said, you going to Purim Meeting tonight? She says, I don't know. What kind of testimony is that by the parents? Their children don't know if they're going to be in meeting. Do your children know that you're going to be in meeting?
Or do they think, well, maybe this time and maybe not this time? Purpose to be a righteous man. Okay. Let us go on back. Not only do the...
Into the book of Acts. Not only does this apply individually, this also applies to churches. The idea of purposing. In other words, you can purpose as an individual to do things, but as you work together in purposing as individuals, it also affects the church as a whole. Acts chapter 11, of course, is a background.
The word of God has gone out into new areas outside of Jerusalem. It kinda went into the Mediterranean Sea and then it went north and it came to Antioch. And at first they were just preaching to Jews. Well, gets to Antioch and they start preaching to Gentiles. And aren't we glad that they preached to Gentiles up there?
But as they preached to Gentiles, they were getting saved and the word came back to Jerusalem and so they looked at it and they said, what can we do to help and encourage these people? And so they look around their meeting. And I could tell just by the way things were going this morning, you know, you're losing somebody that is talented. That's what they did. They looked around and they said, hey, Barnabas is a great encouragement for us.
Let's send us to them. Take our best and send it to them. And so they sent him up there and down in verse 23. Eleven twenty three in Acts says that when he arrived, that's Barnabas, and at Antioch, he witnessed the grace of god. He rejoice and began to encourage them all with a purpose of heart, a resolute heart to remain true to the lord.
See, here's the church and they are, first of all, they're positioned together. They, when you said the church, you knew what you're talking about. They knew exactly who they were. They were positioned together and they wanted to do something together. They said, we're going to prevail together.
We want to work on the word of god. We want to hold these precepts together. Now the idea of working together is good. Americans are generally very independent people. Because we don't want to wait on anybody else who have all these resources available.
My guess is that if I were to go out here in the parking lot and count cars that are out there, I would probably have one car for every family. That's the way we do it. Do we pick up somebody? In fact, I did it this morning. Was kind of like, okay, I think I will drive my pickup instead of riding with my host to this place.
We're independent. Always trying to do that. We need to be very careful of that though. We find out as we go overseas that, you know, they're they're much more community minded. The reason I say that is that we need to think about how we can do things together.
If you're going to have a VBS, do it together. If you're going out evangelizing, do it together. Now that doesn't mean that everybody has to go out evangelizing. You may say, you know, brother, you have a heart for your neighborhood. You go out, we will pray for you.
That's working together. You wanna have a bible study? Can I bring some food? You can lead the bible study. You can host it.
19:00 Paul and Apollos working together
Paul has left. Apollos has come in. Very interesting study there. Encourage you to look at his life a little bit more in these few verses, we want to drop into verse 27 and it said he purposed to go, he wanted to go to Achaia. The brethren encouraged him, they wrote to the disciples to welcome him, and when he arrived, greatly helped those who had believed through grace.
Here's a young man that had a lot of purposing in his life. First, he proposed to spread the gospel. Basically, it was overseas for him. It was across the Aegean Sea. He wanted to go across to another people.
And then I would say that the church prodded him. You see where it says it encouraged him. We need to think about that. How do we do this as a church? Here's an individual that has worked at probably doing these other things we've talked about, having a pure life and one that's purposing to do something to be righteous.
He's going out with the gospel, so they say, great idea. Let's encourage you. You go to the work. And we need to think about that. What can we do to encourage people to take the gospel out?
That's part of the purpose of gathering as a church is to encourage one another. We need to do that. And then it says that they they promoted him. In other words, they sent letters out to others to say, here is a good brother. We need to do that.
We need to see that those people that are encouraged to go out are then told so other people are told about them, so that they know that these are good people. You know, not everybody in this world is good, those who would go out claiming to be Christians. So we need to be very careful how we do that, but we want to do it in a way that we let others know what is good and what is going on. It was interesting the last time I was here, and I find it a very good practice, is that our brother asked me for a letter because see he didn't know me. Roger knew me but Roger wasn't here.
He didn't know me so he asked me for a letter. And so I was very happy to give him a letter that says, yes, this is a person that you can trust. And that is good to do that. And so they sent him out. And then we see the result is there was profit to these.
And so now, as we look at that, we've covered six of these. Purposing to do in your life. Now I wanna go into team workers abroad. I wanna talk about that. I want to talk about it in such a way that you kind of see how other people purpose to go out and perhaps you can purpose to do that also.
Here we go. We knew we would get there. All right. These are the topics I covered. These are the areas.
Solomon, Daniel, his three friends, Joseph, Barnabas, and Apollos. Alright. Teamworkers abroad. Hit it too fast. Let's go to that, and now it went back.
Okay. First question is, what is Teamworkers abroad? Well, it's basically an organization or a ministry. I should say it's a ministry that organizes teams to go out and help missionaries. One of the reasons we ran into this is that a missionary goes out and a missionary will spend time learning the language.
He'll spend time learning the culture, figuring out how to get the gospel out. And these guys are great evangelists or great church planners or great disciplers, but they may not know how to build anything. Now look at The United States. We have all of these people that have these skills. They can build.
They can do things, but they don't know the language. They don't know the culture. So we want to get those two together so that we can accomplish more for the Lord. Building for assembly missionary. Where did it come from?
2007. John Rowley was thinking about this. He is a contractor out of Dubuque, Iowa. And he went down into Florida and talked to other godly men on the board of Assembly Care. And they said that is a good idea.
We need to be helping missionaries. And so they agreed. They said get ahold of Teamworkers of Canada. And so we met with them. And they said use our name, use our literature, use our experience, take anything you can.
They've been working about fifteen, twenty, fifteen years at that time. And so they had experience. And so we did some of that. And I encourage you, if you want to go on a trip and our trip doesn't match and we don't have much this year, look on their website and go with them. They're a great bunch of guys to work with.
These are the guys on the working board. Tim DeYoung is a contractor. He's actually been on the mission field all of his life since nine months old. And he still is he's a commended worker out of Augusta, Georgia. Scott Nordstrom is an architect out of Omaha, Nebraska.
John Rally, I mentioned, is a contractor from Dubuque. Ichase Cows in Eastern Iowa, and Steve Wilson is a printer. He's also from Eastern Iowa. Okay. Here's a list of where we've been.
We're going go down through these fairly quick and show you some actual pictures of them. We're going to have to shorten that list one of these days. First one was with the Canadians. We went down to Ensenada, right south of San Diego a little bit. There was a missionary there that needed a house because he was a great disciple and he needed a place to do it.
So we went down. Here was this lab. It would have been poured about a day or two, which is a little fast if you're a cement layer, you would know that. But you see the potential out there. That's all government housing out there on the Far Hill.
We went in there with about 10 men and in about a week, we had we had the interior walls going up. And after two weeks, this is what we had, and it's where we intended to be. Some of the windows were in. The doors were sitting there ready to go in. The electrical was in.
The plumbing was in. And this was enough roof that it would shed the water until we could get another team down later to finish it off and put on a second story. Locals could do some of the inside so that they could move in in a few weeks. I wrote last... I think it was last fall now and asked them, where is the picture of your place?
This is what they now have to work with. This is their house that they can disciple people in. Let me talk about a team just a little bit. To me, this is an ideal team. Guy in a plaid shirt was over 70.
He was an industrial contractor. He's used to building buildings. The two bald headed guys are middle aged. They are contractors also, framers, I think. The two young guys are actually sitting next to their dad.
That's that youth and enthusiasm that comes along with this. And we like to have those along. The fellow in the black shirt is an older fellow. He was, I think, 75 at the time. He could weld as well as have a good rapport with young people.
This is Tim DeYoung. He was along. I skipped the picture because I was taking it and there was actually another team leader. Another place you want to go down to, and this is where I was in Mexico, and this is Pepe Berrios. His wife has passed away over a year ago now and they have labored there for about forty years in this area, mostly amongst the Aztec Indians that are up in the mountains.
The Indians are very suspicious people because they were chased up there by the Spaniards. They fled for their lives and so they didn't just accept everybody and Pepe would go up there and they wouldn't listen to him to hear him preach the gospel. But over time, he won their confidence enough that they would come And now after forty years, there's people, people, people getting saved all of the time. Americans show up and and preach to them and, you know, I've heard of stories of 40 people in a village will get saved as a result, but that's 40 of work on this. He does it by discipling.
He sends disciples out and they're... You talk about purposing to serve God. These are young people set aside a a year of their life and they spend that time where they will get up ready to say the word of God at 08:00 and they'll study until about ten and then they jump in probably a pickup and they go out and they drop them off in the village one or two at a time. They'll go out and evangelize and and encourage the saints. Then they'll pick them up and I've sat in Pippi's house at 09:00 at night.
They're just getting back. They want some supper so they can get to the chapel, sleep on a mattress on a cement floor, and do it the next day, and the next day, five days a week. That's purposing to serve God. The six days, Sunday. So then they go back to the villages and gather around with the Lord's people to break bread.
Here's the people that are purposing to serve God. Here I am out in the middle of nowhere, so I'm lost as to where three hours away is. We jumped in and we met these people out at the local seven eleven gas station. They had driven for probably an hour. We drove for two more hours to get to an assembly.
They're having their third year anniversary And these are people that purposed to go there because what they did is they emptied the assembly. Think about it. Would you all be willing to go out here, get onto a school bus, and ride for three hours. I don't know what nice town is three hours away from here. But go there to spend the afternoon, morning and afternoon, to encourage the assembly and then come back home.
That's what they did. That's purposing to serve God. Well, is what we want to do for them. They did have a flat place. They needed a building.
They've got all these people being saved. They need a place to meet. They also want to encourage the saints around them. Here's some of the disciples. They took off from going out to the villages.
So we needed holes for foundation here, so they started digging holes. The backhoe was coming the next day. They had about three or four holes done. These are holes that are five by five by five. They pray over it.
They dedicate the building to the Lord, pour cement after a week. Sometimes it rains there. Pray for these trips as you go because it does rain, the weather can affect everything because you get water in your holes when you do that. But you dig it out. And when we left after a couple weeks, we had gotten it back up to ground level and that was good because now the locals can say, we can put the walls on top of this.
And so they did. This is the type of people we're serving. There's half a dozen disciples on this side, a couple Americans, ones... The rest of them is the assembly. That's the size of the assembly.
Now pay attention to that because I wanna show you something. Here's the building. About a year later, it needed roofing. So we went back with some help to get the roofing trusses in. A month later, they have a conference.
They don't even have doors and windows in. They have a conference. 320 people come to this conference. Probably a bunch of them walked in. A few of them jumped in a pickup and rode down because they would supply that.
And they preach the gospel there and six more people get saved. Think about your conferences and people getting saved. These are people that purpose to serve God. Okay. We're going down to Peru.
Chikleo Tom Clark, some of you are familiar with him. And so this is a crowd. This is actually a year over a year ago. This is some of the guys that the Lord brought together for that. They were working on a building, needed a classroom building.
And the locals were putting up a lot of the work they wanted us to work on, getting a roof on, temporary roof, getting doors and windows in. And so we kind of looked at it. Some things were a little bit behind. We started building you just take a flat one by 12 and you start sawing it into pieces to make windows. And this is where we ended up at the end.
We did get the roof on. And windows were made, doors were ready to go in, a few guys were staying longer. We'll come back and show you some more of that. Columbia, last fall. This is a camp with Dave Easter.
And one of the problems you have to always be careful of, pray as you talk about teams going, is that all the transportation hooks up. This is a picture of a bus seat in the countryside of Bogota. My wife and I were flying out of Des Moines. We flew to Denver, wanted to connect with the team in Houston and then fly into Bogota. Well, there was a four hour layover between Denver and Houston.
You think four hours is plenty of time. It's not. There was mechanical failures, the plane didn't get into Denver. We're sitting there watching, looking out the window. We finally get on the plane, we fly in and as we land, if you're familiar with airplanes, say, okay, now you can turn on your cell phone.
So I immediately turn mine on, call the team, say, are you at? We're backing away from the gate. We haven't got to the gate yet. Bye. So they get in, they land, they get to get to camp.
They've got to get to work. I'm a day late. So now it pulls out a missionary to take me through the Spanish speaking bus lines to get out of the camp. That's why you pray for these teams. Pray for connections.
Pray for things as we go. Here's the team they brought together. Dave Easter and his family, his kids are sitting there on the ground and the guys that were down there with a couple extras. The object was to put ceramic tile in showers in the ladies bathroom. This lady, she's a techie person.
She went thinking she might do cooking, but with my coming late missionary wife came with me. So now she had something else to do. So she is willing. What you want on the team is somebody willing to work. She never laid tile in her life.
She says, what can I do? Here, I'll show you how to play tile. And she laid down and she put tile on. Her husband's an electrician so he's putting electricity in. This is way they do it.
You put up a wall and then you chip it back out and lay the conduit. I don't know why. I've seen it more in one country. Had a corner of a wall that was cracked so we fixed that. We had water problems, leakage, so we got that one fixed.
This little line here is the supply line from the city. It's about the size of my finger. But it's supplied a camp for 250 kids. Not bad. We went to a chapel, talk about fellowship.
They don't speak much English, I don't speak Spanish, but you can feel the fellowship. They offer you the cookies and the donuts and the coffee. It's a great time together. So we back and get the things completed. Here's finishing off the tiling.
Electrical was placed in. The corner was repaired. Even threw in a sidewalk to keep the kids' feet out of the mud. Let's go back to Peru. And again, we go back, ring the door, get let in.
Here's the building that we worked on the year before. You know, those things are set. Actually, over here on this side, a couple administrative offices and two classrooms which they're using. The intent was to build a second story, but the Lord didn't supply the money. So the directors looked around and said, back here in this back corner, we're going to put in a sports slab, something that the kids can play on and it'll keep them clean as well as a nice place to play some soccer.
Because these are poor kids that I work with and if they can keep their uniform clean all week, it gets washed. Once a week it is good. So that's what you come to. Here it is. We discovered because of this line over here on this side that that's the gravel that needed to be laid.
We needed about three or four inches of gravel out in this quarter of it and then we needed sand on top of that. So, you get a wheelbarrow and a couple shovels and you start to it and that's your work. Next day was Sunday, break bread with believers. There was about 50 believers there. Probably 10 of them were missionaries and part of our team.
The rest of them were locals because that's what he's doing. He's building up the local assembly using his school as a process. When you go on these trips, often you're asked to help out. Wednesday nights, Sundays, you get to speak or you give your testimony or you teach the young people or do something. This was Sunday morning, they asked me to speak and you do it by translation.
Monday, we kind of try to grease up the wheelbarrows, the bearings are all gone in, but we tried to grease them. My wife went off to make curtains for this school. They needed curtains. So she went to the market. You go down the market and you go through and there's this whole long row of places that you can buy cloth.
One of the guys is an electrician. He didn't feel like he could handle all of the cement work, so he's working on the switches. It's the delivery of the cement and bringing... That's actually a motorcycle, three wheeled motorcycle. That's where they bring a lot of things in.
Brought in about a ton. Those are 100 pound bags. They throw them off. We're gonna use them. So we mix it up.
You throw gravel in and this where you... The the guy in the yellow back there with the hat on. He's the young ambitious person. He's about 25. And he was the one that did most of the work because you would pick up five buckets of gravel and about four buckets of sand, is off the picture, a couple buckets of water and that bag of cement and you throw it in the mixer.
You get three wheelbarrows full. And you take 12 batches of those to make this portion of the slab we're working on. I figured we were handling 10,000 pounds in every slab like that. We did it. Pray for our guys.
The guy doing electricity made a misstep on the roof, went right through it. Did crack a rotor cuff in his pelvis. And also, these girls are in here. One of them stayed as a teacher, but we were getting sick, diarrhea. And it was it was bad.
And one guy was just flat out in bed. The others were wishing they were there. We So asked the girls to come down and help. They were a big help. We need help.
My wife's getting things sewn. This is again, why you take young people along? They can do this. And so this is a team. And often on a trip, we try to take one time just to kind of see the scenery.
This was a rice factory, how they polish it. We learned how they polish it and grade it and all sorts of things they did with it. Okay. Purposing. We want prayer.
37:55 Pray for the teams and their work
You know, we know Satan is at work in this world. He opposes what we're doing. We want to be acceptable to those we're going to. We don't want to come in with just American ideas. We want to be going with joy.
We want to encourage them because you understand, a lot of those people may not travel more than 20 miles. They're like our Lord. They just don't get outside of where they're at. Suddenly they discover here's somebody in another part of the world that's interested in them. And then you we come away changed, refreshed.
I mentioned to Roger last night, just ask me, I've got stories all over the place of these type of people. There's not enough you can crowd in a whole hour in the morning. What can you do? You can participate. Go as a team worker.
If you're a leader, you can be that. We need construction leaders right now. That's our big request is that you'd pray that we'd have people that could lead the construction projects. And in this day and age, we may need somebody to help others cover the cost, work together as an assembly, say, okay, you go brother, we want to send someone out or you go sister. Well, will we get behind you?
We'll pray for you. We'll help you cover the cost. I know some guys that don't have a job and have the skills and the time, but they need some money from someone else. And then other skills are available. There's a lot of little things, background things that need to work with an organization too.
What are the costs if you're interested? Well, the flight varies quite a bit depending on where we're going and what time and how how things work out. I've been on both ends of this as far as transportation. The rest of it are things you try not to have an impact on the missionary. Thing you want to do is have him get all done and say, boy, those guys ate a lot of food and they use a lot of electricity and they look all that water and wishing that maybe we didn't have come.
So, we want to not have an impact so we put these in there. And then pass on to word. We've got a website. We've got a Facebook page. Back there, I encourage you to sign the sheet because otherwise you'll walk out and forget it.
There's a business card, there's a sheet there that you can sign out. Name, address, email if you have it. If not, put down your postal address, and then your interest. You know, prayer or I'll pick on you again. Accountant.
Got an accountant sitting up here. Sign up what you're interested in. You know, I'm electrician. Put it down And then tell other missionaries. You know, Eidenhauer's as they go out.
Tell them about it. I don't know if we go to The Philippines because of they may not need us. But tell the missionaries about it because this is a young organization not only do you not know about it, they don't know about it. So pass the word on to them. These are some of the areas you're planning on going.
There's a sheet back there on that. Pick one up. Feel free to take it. Different areas we're going next year basically. And then this one is, thank you for the visit.
Any quick questions you'd like to have covered before I pray? Yes. That was you're talking at Peru. Basically security. I don't know why or how they chose.
Those are tall walls. I know before we got there last year that they said they had guinea pigs for a while and their people liked them in the area. And so somebody crawled over the wall and stole the guinea pigs. I mean they crawled over a big tall wall, but they did it. So there's a guard that walks around to see if people stay outside the wall.
Know, us Americans don't think of that, but that's just natural for other cultures. Any other pertinent questions? Well, are the places we have been. And it has been, so far it's kind of by our own context, in other words, we've known some of these, we need to get the word spread. We would basically go anywhere.
It's gotta be feasible. Some places we will not go, like I mentioned Philippines, we probably won't go to from the standpoint that you can hire the locals to do it and do well. Other places, they don't have the expertise. I heard one story, somebody was asking me about going to, I've forgotten, it's one of those islands off of Africa. Because he says they went down there and they said, we want you to build us an orphanage, make it a big building.
And they came back and it was 16 foot long I think it was. It was huge compared to their houses. They needed some expertise in saying, okay, this is how you build a big building because they want a house 20 kids, you know. So I don't know, does that answer your question? We'd kind of go anywhere.
I've had some contact with people in India, don't know what will happen there. There is the cost effect that you, you know, is this worth the trip? There's a lot of reasons why it's worth it. Any other quick questions? Well, let's close with a word of prayer.
43:40 Closing prayer
Father, that these people would be saved and we would be able to spend eternity with them also. We'd pray in Jesus name. Amen.
