0:04 Appreciation for music and singing
Great singing. Never heard that song before. Well, I appreciate it. I appreciate the, you know, music has a thing called, I think, a crescendo. Right?
It kinda starts and sometimes it gets faster and it definitely gets louder. Right? And that's the intention. And so crescendo. That's good.
You can feel it when you're singing that you're in tune with the crescendo. But your voice is in the back of my ear, and I got hearing aids in because I'm deaf. There's one level when you started in some of the earlier songs, but the last song at the last, he's worthy, a lot louder. That's good. Let's pray.
I won't go farther than that. Father, we thank you for your son, the Lord Jesus Christ. We thank you that we can be gathered together unto him, who, as we have already expressed in song, is worthy. And he's certainly more worthy than we can express, and he's certainly not worthy because we think he is. You've declared him worthy.
We have found him as our savior to be totally worthy, but, Lord, that's the work of your spirit in our hearts and our minds through the power of your word to declare him as he is. And we have but a few moments now to look further into the record you've given us of your son. And as we do so, we trust our time would be well spent. Work in us, we pray, through the power of your might, Lord Jesus. Amen.
At the Lord's Supper, several points were made that brought back to my mind a memory back probably in '75, 1975, as a machinist at the General Electric in Erie. And another younger brother got saved and came in to the meeting in Erie, but he also worked at GE. And at the time, as a machinist at GE was a good blue collar job. Paid well enough. He wanted to leave his job.
He came once and was very agitated. And I said, why? He said, well, because people take the name of Jesus in vain at at work. They say his name as we were reminded this morning, the ability to use his name to curse or just disrespect his name. And so I can't work in that environment.
And I have to leave. I have to find better employment where people don't swear. I don't know where you go in America to to do that other than probably here, but then probably there'll be some days somebody will slip and say, ah. Shouldn't have said it that way. Yeah, taking God's name in vain is clearly not right.
But I I was also taught that if you take God's name, and Jesus is the one who asked, why do you call me Lord and don't do what I say? Is that not taking his name in vain? Probably is. But nevertheless, going back to this young man who my energy at that moment was towards him to help him manage this difficult issue he has in the world. People swear with Jesus' name.
4:37 The sweetness of the name of Jesus
It drives away our fear. It makes the wounded spirit whole. It calms the troubled breast. It's manna to the hungry soul. To the hearer, to the weary, it's rest.
You see, because we have the ability to use our ears the way we want. You can say his name any way you want, but I'm only going to hear it one way. That's my choice. That's my discipline. That's the energy I wanna bring to the world where, yeah, you got the name wrong and you're using it wrong.
But when I hear the name, how sweet the name of Jesus sounds in my ear. He didn't leave his job. He thought that was probably good advice. You know, discipline your mind. Of course, avoid conversations if you can, but when you do hear it in a disrespectful way, that doesn't mean you have to hear it that way.
You can hear it and know him who is behind the name, of course, the Lord Jesus Christ. So I I have Acts 17, starting at verse one as my assignment. And as brother Andy mentioned, I will be here next week as well for the whole portion of the... But my preparation has been only the first two cities in Acts 17. There are three, of course.
But I would like to... If you... If I may, because I listen to the messages before I come. Brother Ray always makes me giggle at some point in this message. Right?
He says something that literally puts a smile on my face. Right? So he was talking about conflict in the fifteenth chapter and how to resolve conflict. Conflict resolution is an important issue in our world. You know, there are kids in high school who have to go to principals and have conflict resolution every day and employees have to deal with it.
HR has to deal with conflict resolutions. And so there's conflicts in the fifteenth chapter that Ray pointed out. And one of them was Paul and Barnabas trying to resolve whether we should take John Mark back with us. Now that we're going on a second trip, John Mark, don't forget, deserted us. And Paul took it that way.
He left the work. My brother Ray is talking about people he's taken to Mexico. Right? Young people who have a heart for the Lord and are ready to go, full of vigor and vamp. And they're on their way.
And they get there and suddenly they ingest something, or the temperature or mosquito bite or something, and suddenly they're on the bathroom floor, and for ten days, two weeks, they can't leave. They're totally captive because of intestinal problems. That made me smile. Because I thought, is Ray... Brother Ray trying to suggest that John Mark left the work because he needed to go home to find a bathroom?
He didn't, of course. He didn't. But that's what made me smile, that the possibility that the man had a legitimate issues to get home as soon as possible. We don't really know why. And when you don't have an answer to why's in the book of Acts, you have to realize that the spirit of God deliberately left out some details that he didn't want you to be stressed about.
8:40 Studying the book of Acts slowly
He just zoomed by. Oh, I saw something. I'll write it down. That's how the spirit of God influenced him to write. Details that, number one, he wasn't there for.
Alright? Details that, how did he even notice that? Where did that come from? He uses words that nobody else uses in the New Testament. Obvious that he's an educated doctor.
And so, it's an amazing collection that we call the Acts of the Apostles. Is it rightly named? Well, you can't argue with people who canonize things and say this is the title, but if we could argue, and I usually do argue, I would say it seems more like it's the acts of some of the apostles. Because not all the apostles are mentioned after a certain part. And that causes concern.
Why aren't they mentioned? What were they doing? Was there nothing to... As spirit of God to inspire Luke to write about them? That possibility.
Did they not do anything inspiring? Some of them. Others did. And that's convicting to me. How many Christians have anything in their life that's inspiring to other Christians?
That's just... I'm not looking for an answer. I'm just saying that is there anything in your Christian life thus far that other Christian look at and say, well, that's inspiring. I don't remember that. That's a good testimony.
We give testimonies about how we were saved. Do you have a testimony of what you've done in the past two weeks? That's what counts. That's the book of Acts. You see, it's unfolding.
It's unfolding. And if you know God well enough, you know he's keeping track of everything you're doing. He's writing a book of acts about your life. He doesn't need a book. Maybe he's using an Apple phone.
I don't know. But he's got it all on record, and you're gonna see it someday. It's called the judgment seat of Christ. As a believer, you're gonna stand before me and he's gonna go, oh, let's watch. No, we're not speeding it up.
Just... No, we're not skipping. We're gonna watch every day. Let's look at every day of your life since you've been a Christian. So I call the book of Acts the acts of the Holy Spirit.
Probably wrong. You know, I duly noted. Right? But when I think of the book of Acts, I don't think about men. I think about the Lord Jesus Christ using his spirit to build his church.
And that's the hard concept for us. And Christ knew it was hard for them. I'm leaving. You're gonna have to do this without me. I'm not gonna be physically here.
That's a hard sell for them. You're not gonna be physically here. You're not gonna physically be around so we can find you and say, what do we need to do here? What... How should we show me, tell me, lead me?
No. I'm not physically gonna be here, Jesus said. I'm gonna be gone. But I'm gonna give you my spirit. He's gonna live in you.
And he's gonna empower you. And so you're really not gonna be able to do anything without him. Alright? So just wait till you get power. Alright?
Now you say that, immediately you think, well, this is why we're not Pentecostal. No. Listen. Listen. Don't make that the issue.
Clear and simple. Right? If you're not empowered by the Holy Spirit to walk on this planet, you're a defeated Christian. You will succumb to the lust of your flesh, the lust of your eyes, and the pride of life. You will find yourself a believer and yet not close to being anywhere behind or following the Lord Jesus as he tries to lead you.
Alright? And and that's a that's a tough space to be. And and when Christians are in that position, they suddenly need a lot. They're very needy. And what do they need?
Do they need the spirit of God? Absolutely. But they don't think they need the spirit of God because somebody told them he's already in you. You received him when you received Christ. He was baptized into you.
You belong to him. He's the seal of God. He's the agent of God that lives in you. He will never come out. He's there.
13:44 Sensing the Spirit's presence and power
When you go through the book of Acts, you see the disciples being filled with the spirit on the day of Pentecost. Why would they need to be filled with the spirit in Acts four? Why did the spirit of God... Because they were walking in the planet and they realized I need replenished. I need the spirit of God empowering me.
But we can't talk like that for fear of being recognized as a denomination that we disagree with. And so what do we have? We have our doctrine. We hold to it fast. When we're right, right's not power.
Being right is not power. When Peter stood up, and get this, I know, I'm way off Luke seven, or Acts 17. I'm not in a hurry, trust me. Jesus Christ says, don't leave the city. You wait for power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you.
As John baptized, baptized with water, so you shall be baptized with fire. What's Peter do next? Soon as Christ is off the planet. I mean, they come back from the mount. Christ leaves the planet, and they say, why don't stand here, go, get back to work.
They go back into the city, and what? Let's replace Judas. That's a good idea, I guess. Oh, I got all this scripture that says we should replace them. Okay.
You're right. So we have two names. In the Lord, you know which one, but we're going to toss lots to figure out your will here. Does that sound spiritual? Does that sound spiritual?
You got dice? You wanna throw dice to know God's will? Now you think I'm saying what Peter did was wrong? I didn't say that. Was he filled with the spirit when he did it?
Is the question. Was he spirit led? Did the spirit tell him to do that? That's the book of acts. That is the book of acts.
The one Peter was confronting Ananias and Sapphira because they were coming in lying about the money that they were gonna give, but keeping some back in the fifth chapter, which you've already done. He didn't need any dice to figure out if they're telling the truth. Lord, I'm gonna throw some dice. Tell me if if they're accurate or not. He knew.
How did he know? He's filled with the holy spirit. You see, we think I got enough verses to support what I'm doing. And Peter did. You see him quoted.
He quotes them. But was he filled with the holy spirit? Was he being led by the spirit? And that's a huge difference. And it's a huge difference, I'm sorry to say this, in the assemblies.
Because assemblies boast about being right, but a lot of them are spiritually void. Spiritually void. Because they think rightness is enough. They think rightness is power. They think rightness is the place to be.
Filled with the spirit is the only place to be. He'll discern the word of God to keep you on the right path. But we can't talk like that anymore. We're not allowed to. Right?
And I get that. When I was first saved, went off and joined the street church, people being slammed by the spirit, speaking in tongues. I heard all the gibberish and all that, and all these holy spirit gifts and all that. And I walked away and thought that that doesn't seem right to me. And started searching the scriptures harder to figure out what this is.
You know? So, yeah. Yeah, I get it. But that doesn't mean being right is being filled. And it's not as well, I was filled once, or I believe I'm filled.
I believe I'm filled. We have to start looking for evidence of the fruit of the spirit. That's one evidence. And that's just things that other people can look at and say, wow, they're loving, they're grace, they're this, they're that. But how about the demonstration of the power of the spirit, so that when you walk in this building, the spirit of God has been given you for the benefit of others.
He's been given to you for the benefit of others. So that when you build people up. Oh, I leave that to the elders. There you go. That's the system we're in.
We replace Jesus Christ with the elders. And when the elders don't do something right, now we got a lot, we got big issues, we got to argue, we got to fight, we got to divide. You see, because lacking the spirit of God to take the word into your own heart and burn it in there and say, this is how we move forward. The absence of the spirit of God in the assemblies will be the death of the assemblies. And all the time that they're dying, they'll be right in doctrine, but dead in spirit.
I'm sorry to say that. I'm sorry to say that. And I'm not predicting that here. I'm just saying that when I travel, when I see assemblies getting smaller and smaller, and what's the issue? Well, issue is that there's no life.
No spirit filled life in too many of the believers. That's not attractive. I'm sorry to say that's not attractive. Doctor and sound. Brother John.
19:49 The slave girl and Paul and Silas
This is not a pop quiz, but I probably should give a pop quiz. Because a lot of you are looking at me with big eyes like I never heard this before. How could I hear it? I'm a 100 miles away and you never heard it and you were here. It happens.
Because it's the spirit of God, it gives you ears to hear. If any man has ears to hear, let him hear what the spirit says. Right? Anyway, that's a wonderful point. You know why it's wonderful?
Because we live in a world with a lot of people behind us, screaming in the streets, verses and truths, trying to solve the sickness of the American culture. And so what? Half the church has moved into a political arena. We'll use this verse to solve all the politics. That's the...
That to me is like behind you there's this woman who... And what did she cry out? John said. John pointed out very clearly. What she was saying was accurate.
But she was shouting it, and it was annoying, and it was not necessary. And the source matters. The source of the noise matters. Please believe me. Just because somebody's behind the scenes shouting out a verse, printing a verse, posting a verse, podcasting a verse, and you like the verse, and it's a good verse, and it's good stuff, the source matters.
The source, brothers and sisters, matters who's saying it and what that person's testimony is. And if you're going to do that, you matter. You as a source matters. So Denzel, I'm speeding up now, Denzel, this was just last week. Right?
He's in the end of Acts 16, and he's talking about the prison guard, the Roman soldier who's now in charge of the prison, and Paul and Silas are locked deep and hits his charge to make sure they don't get out. And they're in Philippi, and they went across, you know, from Asia into Europe and it's the first European church that's built... That sees people saved and it starts with a woman who's probably not Jewish. She was a proselyte but she's got a place to pray and she meets there. Her whole household gets saved and then, yeah, then there's this prison.
The slave woman causes commotion and then that's dealt with and then they're in prison. And while they're in prison, they're singing hymns and and then what happens? Who knows what happens next? Come on now, that's part of the pop quiz. What happens next?
Earthquake. Pardon? Earthquake. Earthquake. The foundation of the building was shaken.
That's a great experience. Right? They knew that from acts four. When they prayed, the place where they were praying was shaken. Right?
But in this situation, what the what the prison official think about doing? Kill himself. Now, take this very serious. I worked with delinquents for a number of years. I literally have taken glass out of somebody's hand who's slicing her wrist to keep her from dying.
People self harm all the time. When something is shaken in their life and it doesn't feel good, and they don't know where it came from, How did it get so unstable? And who's the author of it? And what am I going to do next? And how bad did it shake?
They get into this situation where I might as well hurt myself. Please believe me. I'm gonna go out on a limb here. You don't know all those self harming habits. You know the big ones.
Self destructive behavior, especially in young people, is deadly in the church. I'm not even talking about the world. I'm talking among Christian young people. Self destructive behavior. Right?
And they're on a path because something's not right in their life. Something's been shaken. They feel the core, the foundation has moved. And a lot of times it has. It has.
They've looked deep and they have a memory verse and they thought, well, I thought I could not, and yet, this is how... This is what happened. And I didn't expect God to ever, ever, ever let that happen or bring that into my life, and yet he has, and therefore he must not care about me. He must not love me the way he says. He must not hold me tight.
Why did he let this happen? Why do I feel so miserable in your presence? And they get self destructive. They find a way to deal with their pain their own way. They just do.
I'm sorry. And I don't mean to limit it to young people, adults do. Self destructive behavior. That's what the guy had. I love that Andy brought that or Denzel brought that out.
25:56 Paul and Silas going to Lydia's house
So I'm gonna suggest to you the word encouraged is one of the misused, misunderstood, and wrongly used word among Christians. So if you came here, when you left, would you say, I was encouraged today to be there. Do you use that language? I found out... I don't expect anybody to say that message was very encouraging.
That's... I don't preach that way. I didn't come to encourage you that way. Because in most people's mind, encourage means, I want you to put your arm around me and make me feel comfort. I want I want to feel wanted, I want to feel loved, and I want to feel needed.
And when people don't feel loved, needed, and wanted, you don't see them for a long time. They need all three. Loved, wanted, and needed. And they might just want that. Right?
And and so there is there is a word, unfortunately, and I read out of the NIV, for encouragement that's different from this word. Only thing is NIV translate them all the same. That's the problem with translations. You rely on one translation, that's your preference, so be it. The Lord bless you in your searching of the scriptures, but you better get a good Greek dictionary.
Because not all words are the same. Even though they're translated different, so you look up a definition in a Greek dictionary, and it says, well, it's used here, here, used here, used here, used here. When you look at all those verses, it's not translated the same. It's contextual translation, I'm sorry to say. And most translations insist it's not, but most are.
They're translating based on what they think it means in that context, in that manner, in that period, in that conversation. Alright? This word here is not encouraged. It's urge. I want to urge you.
And see, that's what I prefer to do. I don't want to comfort anybody to be less than filled with the spirit, less than walking in the spirit, less than coming for the right reason. Maybe if you're onto the self destructive behavior, and you're going out from this room, and you're going to find a way to continue, then I'm I'm going to try to find a way to, number one, to encourage you not to, and number two, to find out the pain that's in your life. What burdens you? What what burdens are you carrying that's making your life so painful that you would self destruct?
That you adopt behavior that's not healthy for you. You know it's not healthy for you. Even explain why you do it, doesn't matter. It's not healthy for you. And yet you do it.
Yeah. I'm gonna find a way to... Let me let me introduce you to a man who said, come on to me all you who are labored and heavy burdened. That's Jesus Christ. People have burdens.
I look at some of your faces this morning and I just wanna say what what burden are you carrying? Let me show you where to lay it down. Let me show you how to put it down without fear. That's Jesus Christ. That's his wonderful invitation.
Come unto me, all ye who are burdened and heavy laden. Acts 17 verse one. Yeah. Don't get don't get gummed up with the word encourage. It's easy to do.
I can help you sort it out if you're interested, but you should be able to do it on your own. If you have a dictionary in your own language. When Paul and his companions, pastor Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica. Anybody wear Nike shoes? Who's got Nike shoes on?
30:11 Thessalonica and its history
Right? After the victory of Thessaly, which is the next province down. Thessalonica. Wasn't always Thessalonica. It used to be Therma.
You could get a Greek map out before Alexander the Great and it's Therma. Now it's Thessalonica. Because the kings changed and he changed the name for his wife's sake. Alright? There was a Jewish synagogue there.
As was his custom, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days, he reasoned with them from the scriptures, explaining and proving that the Messiah had to suffer and to rise from the dead. This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Messiah, he said. Some of the Jews were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, as did a large number of God fearing Greeks and quite a few prominent women. But other Jews were jealous, so they rounded up some bad characters from the marketplace, formed the mob, and started a riot in the city. They rushed to Jason's house in search of Paul and Silas in order to bring them out to the crowd.
When they did not find them, they dragged Jason out and some other believers before the city officials shouting, these men who have caused trouble all over the world have come here now. And Jason has welcomed them into his house. They are all defying Caesar's decree saying that there is another king, one called Jesus. And when they heard this, a crowd and the city officials were thrown into turmoil. And they made Jason and the others postponed and then let them go.
Now as soon as it was night, the believers sent Paul and Silas away to Berea. On arriving there, they went to the Jewish synagogue. Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the scriptures every day to see if Paul... What Paul was saying was true. As a result, many of them believed as did also a number of prominent Greek women and many Greek men.
But when the Jews in Thessalonica learned that Paul was preaching the word of God at Berea, some of them went there too, agitating the crowds and stirring them up. The believers immediately sent Paul to the coast. Silas and Timothy stayed in Berea. And those who escorted Paul brought him to Athens and then left with instruction for Silas and Timothy to join them as soon as possible. That's my portion.
Geography majors, any geography majors? No. History majors? Greek? Roman?
What? American? You're all American history majors? That's alright. It's only 250 years old.
Anyway, you got in your mind a picture of the map, at least? You know where the Black Sea is? Right? Istanbul called at the time what? Byzantium.
After that, Constantinople. Now it's Istanbul. Right? It's a city. It's in the heart of Turkey.
Alright? There was a road from the Adriatic Coast all the way to Istanbul. The Romans built it. Alright? The Romans built it.
18 feet wide, cobblestone. Every mile had a marker called the Via Ignatia. It went from the Adriatic Sea all the way to Istanbul so the Romans could move supplies and trade real quick. Alright? Philippi was on it, and the next city going where?
West. From Philippi they went west. But they passed through two cities. Apollonia and Phibylos. We're not sure why.
34:32 Thessalonica as a crossroads
You can go... Well, not 270. You can go north or south, or you can go east and west. You can go east and west or north and South. So they get to Thessalonica and they go in the synagogue and they open the scriptures.
And they're there and they're working hard. And the Thessalonians are... People are being saved and there's a church starting. And if you wanna know how powerful the church is, then you read first and second Thessalonians. They had a great testimony.
They suffered greatly for the causes of Christ. Right? But the agitation from who? From the people in the market. And Thessal Onica was a city known for the bread dough.
One of the things the Romans did to help cities was you can't work, you can't find a job, there's no food, we're going to bring bread, we're going to give you free bread. Called bread and circus. That's what they call it in politics. You just don't do any... Will you watch watch the watch the gladiators and eat the bread for free.
Yeah? They were standbys, jobless. It kinda reminds me of some of the malls we have in in America. Bunch of kids, they ain't got no work. They got no jobs.
They're just troublemakers. Well, these troublemakers caused trouble for Paul and Silas. Right? And then eventually, Jason, the church was actually probably housed because they were there long enough to see people saved. And the accusation is, you're trying to teach us to violate the laws that we only bow down to Caesar.
Yeah. Well, that's always gonna cause trouble when you tell people that they shouldn't bow down to who they're bowing down to. Do you know who you bow down to? Would you admit who you bowed down to? So this city, Thessalonica, they left it, went to Berea.
Same thing happened. Only Bereans at least searched the scriptures more. So now we have three cities in Europe that have been spiritually seed sown, spiritually people saved, spiritually people gathering. Right? And then we come across the real hard issue.
And I'll leave this with you. And not because it's a point in scripture that has to be contended with. It's a point in your life that has to be contended. Once they left Berea, they left Macedonia. And why is that important?
When they were directed to go north, it was come to Macedonia. That's that's like coming to Ohio. Let's call it that. Come to Ohio. But when they left Berea, they went to West Virginia.
They weren't supposed to go to West Virginia by the instruction. They had to what? They had to question... Paul had a legitimate right while he's in Athens to question, what am I doing down here in this colony? This is not Macedonia.
In fact, they went through the colony of Thessaly to get there. They went by a lot of cities. They went by two cities here in the beginning of the chapter, Apollonia and Amphibilis. They didn't stop. We don't know why.
How did they make their decisions? Where is the evidence that the spirit of God was in control of what they were doing? And I ask you that. And why do I say it's for you to think about for yourself? Right now, in your life, the other number of hours that you're awake, how did you get there?
What decisions did you make that the spirit of God led you to be doing what in fact you are doing now? The spirit of God lead you to do it? Can you testify to that? Can you say, I'm in Macedonia because the spirit of God said, go to Macedonia through the vision? We don't want you in Bithynia.
We don't want you in Asia. The spirit of Jesus stopped them. He prevented them from going in that direction, but they went to Macedonia. Now they left Macedonia without guidance. Why?
And I challenge young people all the time. Who's making decisions in your life? Where you're gonna work? Where you're gonna go to college? What you're gonna choose for your career?
Who who's deciding that? A college and career course? Some guidance counselor in high school who doesn't know Christ? Where is Jesus Christ in all these decisions everybody's making? Where is his spirit filling you saying, I want you to go in this direction?
Where is the heart sensitive enough to know the spirit of God is saying, I don't want you to do that. I don't... That's good and you're good at it, but I don't want you doing that. I want you here instead. Does the spirit of God have that kind of control over you?
If not, who you bound down to? Dollars and cents? Do your thing. Get successful. Then when you have some spare time, commit it to Christ.
See if you can go on a short term mission. Spend ten days with Ray. That's it? That's it? Ten days?
Is the spirit of God filling you and leading you or not? If you're a Christian, he's supposed to. It's... When you're 40, will. When you have your own family, once the yard is planted and the two cars are in the garage, then I'll finally decide to surrender to the spirit of God filling me for the purpose of leading me.
That's your plan? That's not good enough. I'm sorry. That's not... That is just not good enough.
That's not knowing Christ as savior and as lord and as shepherd. The spirit of god acts... The book of acts is the work of the holy spirit. The acts of the holy spirit. What acts of the holy spirit can you attest to in your life today?
Not that you hope. Next week, maybe. When I come back, I'll be back next week. I'll ask the same question. Alright?
I'm not trying to judge anybody, honest. I'm not. It's the spirit of God's job. I'll leave it to him. He's good at it, in case you didn't know.
He's he's expert at working in your soul to give you that sensitive feeling that something's not right. Right? And that's good that he does that. Anyway, thank you. It's been a pleasure to be here again.
42:21 Looking forward to Athens
Or geography majors. Closing in prayer. Father, we thank you for your word, we thank you for your son and that he's alive and he's building his church, his body, or that we're members of it, we're members in particular, and for those who gather here, Lord, on a regular basis, we thank you for each one and pray that you would continue to build your church here in Westlake by adding those who are being saved every day and that your people here will more than be comforted, Lord, but they'll be urged to walk in the spirit of God. So we commit this time into your hands now in Christ's name. Amen.
