Outline and transcript

0:00 Road map for this morning

Let me give... Before we pray here, let me just give you a little bit of an overview or maybe a kind of a road map of where we're headed this morning. We're going to be in Luke chapter seven and so we're going to try to cover some of these... I'm gonna... I almost wanna liken them to like a...

You know how if you go to a play, like CCS just put on the drama recently, you got a play, you've got scenes, different acts in a scene. And so won't have a stage set up necessarily this morning with but so we won't be drawing the curtain in between in between scenes but there the chapter seven is like a there's scenes and we're going to handle a couple of different scenes this morning and so we're going to read through those to to get our our ourselves reacquainted with these particular scenes. So, as we do that, I'm going to we're going to read them And I don't know. I might even call on these these these Morris men in our meeting. They have a particular ability to be able to read with dramatic reading ability.

If I don't cut the mustard, you know, then we might turn it over to one of them to to read this these these acts, okay? These things. And why I want you to listen to them and and kind of make mental note or I encourage, you know, handwritten notes are good too. Make some notes about things that impress you about these in these different acts or scenes, okay? And we're going to have a time to group think a little bit on that.

So, that's the first thing we're doing. We're going to look at these particular scenes. Then the second thing we're going to do is is we're going to step back and we're to make a little connection between the teaching that we've already had in chapter six and how it connects or flows in to chapter seven. Alright? We're going to see we're going to see that flow.

And then the third thing we're going do is we're going to say, hey, what is the lord speaking for? What does the lord have for us this morning? What is the the lord have for WBF or myself particularly? What are what are some things I need to take away from these acts in in Luke chapter seven? Okay?

Fair enough? You know, put your seat belts on because we're going to we're going to have a good time going through this. Let's pray though as we as we step into it. Our heavenly father, we want to give thanks for the lord Jesus Christ. We're so thankful for the scripture that you you you knew it was going to be so valuable for us and what a valuable resource the scripture is.

Father, I I I wanna give thanks for Westlake Bible Fellowship and all the people that that represents here. I I give thanks for everyone that's joined here this morning. And father, we're gonna we're gonna just say that we want to hear from you. We want you to speak from to us. We want to know clearly as we listen to your word being discussed and taught and observed this morning.

We want to know clearly what your word is for us this morning. Father, we pray we pray that we would be mindful of it. We want our hearts to be sensitive. Right now, we just maybe take a little second and say, lord, soften my heart. Open my heart confess sin.

We want to hear from you. We don't want there to be any obstruction and so father, we pray, we pray this this morning. We ask this in the name of the lord Jesus Christ. Amen. Take your Bibles and turn to Luke chapter seven.

Luke chapter seven and we'll look at our our first act if you will. Luke chapter seven and verse one. Now, when he, this being the lord Jesus, had ended all of his sayings, that's a reference back to the sermon on the plane that we just that we just had heard the last couple of weeks that Jesus had given these teachings. When he had finished them, he entered into Capernaum. And a certain centurion servant who was dear unto him, was dear unto the centurion, that's...

The servant was sick and ready to die. And when he heard that Jesus was in the area, he sent to him of the elders of the Jews beseeching or begging, pleading with Jesus that they would that he would come and heal his servant and when they came, Jesus or when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly saying that he, the centurion is worthy of this request. He's worthy that he's that you should do this for him. For he loves our nation. He has built us a synagogue.

Then, Jesus went with them and when he was now not far from the house, the centurion the centurion sends another group out, a group of friends to Jesus saying, unto him, lord, trouble not yourself for I am not worthy that you should enter into my under my roof. Wherefore, neither thought I myself worthy to come to you but I but but say in a word, if if my servant shall be healed, for I also am a man under authority. Having under me soldiers, I say to one soldier, go and he goes. I say to another, come and he comes and I say to my servant, do this and he does it. Verse nine, Jesus had heard these things and he marveled at him.

And he turned about and said to the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith. No, not in Israel. And they were all sent returning to the house and they found the servant whole which had been sick. This miracle that just happened. Now, here's a chance for you guys to...

I do have to clarify. Raise your hand because Kim recently told me, as you know, a good wife gives you constructive criticism. She says, honey, when you're talking to the audience, people are talking, you can't hear them. So I would say raise your hand, that way I can know who to look at. So, raise your hand.

Tell me something that you observe from this first miracle, these first few verses that we that we've looked at. Trevor? Okay. That's right. Yeah.

They spoke on his behalf. Philip? Right. So, the Jews were saying he is worthy. The the centurion of himself says, I'm not worthy.

Alright. Good. Good. That's kind of a contrasting point. Any other other that jumps out to you, Justin?

Yeah. Well, right. Yeah. Good. Right.

Right. Right. Yeah. You're exactly. Amazed.

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I was thinking about the singing.

I enjoyed the singing this morning here and everybody singing together. You know, like, wonder what God thinks about that. Like, he's hearing the people sing to him. But good. So, these are good thing you're...

You had a hand? Oh. Yeah. Yeah. Good.

Good point. We'll take one more. What other observation? Devin? The fact that the centurion would recognize the authority and Specific authority.

Not just that he was not worthy, but authority too. Yeah. Yeah. Good observation. Hey, you are good bible students.

You know, good job. So that's our first act. That's the first act. Okay? We see we see what we we happened in there.

8:03 Act two: The widow's son

Oh, you know what? Read it after the mic so we...

Act number two. This is NLT. Would you like me to

change it? That's alright.

That's alright.

Okay.

Okay. I'll correct it.

Proper proper King James English. Yeah. Alright. Just... So soon afterwards, Jesus went with his disciples to the village of Nain, and a large crowd followed him.

A funeral procession was coming out as he approached the village gate. The young man who had died was a widow's only son, and a large crowd from the village was with her. When the Lord saw her, his heart overflowed with compassion. Don't cry, he said. Then he walked over to the coffin and touched it, and the bearer stopped.

Young man, he said, I tell you, get up. When the dead boy sat up and began... Then the dead boy sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother. Great fear swept the crowd, and they praised God saying, a mighty prophet has risen among us, and God has visited his people today. And the news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding countryside.

Great. Thank you. Alright. Same same process. Let's make some observations on on act two.

Another another miracle, and feel free to raise your hand. DJ? Humanity in Jesus is showing compassion. Yeah. Good.

Compassion. I like the way that NLT said that. That word compassion is the same the same phrase is used the bowels of mercy. And so, like, that's just like his his heart went out to her. His heart went out to her.

Yeah. Other other things we notice here. Philip? Yeah. Yeah.

So that's a good that's a good point. We see there's two large crowds in this little scene. One is the large crowd that came with Jesus from Capernaum. He had just healed the centurion's son. And by the way, this is the first time Jesus ever healed somebody from afar.

Now we get the... And it says there was a great crowd that followed Jesus. Now we've got a great fat crowd following the widow. Alright? Surrounded the widow, mourners, there's a great crowd there and so these two are kind of coming and they they intersect.

That's good good point. Trevor? Yeah. In contrast. Yeah.

Those who saw the man Yeah. That's such a good point. The way that it says it there, read want it so I want to quote it. They recognized that here's what they said, that god had visited his people. How profound is that?

That Jesus is in their midst, right? There he is and they're starting to say like, okay, wow. This is this is new. This is different. Yeah.

So any any other observations we got there, Mason? Yep. Growing. Yep. Yep.

Yeah. This is the first one that would be raised from the dead. The first person that Jesus rose from the dead. Bible trivia, you know how many people were raised that Jesus rose from the dead or said said to you, get up. And not including him.

Yeah. Two. Three. Close. Three.

Yep. Three. So we have... This is the first one. Jairus' daughter, the second one.

And the third one is? Lazarus. Lazarus. Come forth. That's right.

Yeah. So here we go. That's act two. Act two. Let's look at act three.

12:19 Act three: John's messengers

Yeah. This seven... This is 18. 18. And let's read the verse 23.

Okay.

Then the disciples of John reported to him concerning all these things. And John, calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to Jesus saying, are you the coming one or do we look for another? When the men had come to him, they said, John the Baptist has sent us to you saying, are you the coming one or do we look for another? And that very hour he cured many of infirmities, afflictions, and evil spirits, and to many blind, he gave sight. Jesus answered and said to them, go and tell John the things that you have seen and heard, that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed.

The deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he who is not offended in me. Great.

Yeah. Thank you. Nice job. Let's just continue. Let's let's go ahead and we're gonna combine these these scenes here for the sake of time.

We'll look at the next the next verse there in verse 24. So John John sends his messengers. He asks us of Jesus. Let's continue on in verse 24. When the messengers of John were departed, Jesus began to speak to the people concerning John.

What what did you come out to the wilderness to see? A reed shaken in the wind? By what went you out to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorge...

Gorgeously appalled and live delicately are in the king's courts. And... But what went out for you to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.

Be... This is he of whom it is written, behold, I send my messenger before the face which shall prepare the way of the Lord. For I say unto you, among those that are born of of women, there is none greater than the prophet John John the Baptist. But he that is the least in the kingdom of heaven or the kingdom of God is greater than he, greater than John the Baptist. And all the people that heard him and the publicans justified God being baptized with the baptism of John.

But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves being not baptized of John. And... Well, let's... There's four more verses here. Let's...

We hear Jesus' response to this. So this kind of... This act three is in three little segments. Verse 31, and the Lord said, where then shall I liken this men of the generation? And to what are they like?

And he gives us illustration. They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace. One calling to another, one suggesting or saying, we have piped unto you and you have not danced. We have mourned unto you and you have not wept. For John the Baptist came eating and, came not not eating nor drinking wine and you say, he hath the devil.

The son of man referring to himself has come eating and drinking and you say, behold a gluttonous man and a wine bibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. Verse 35 concludes this section by saying, but wisdom is justified of all her children. So scene three, three little subsections there. Let's make some observations about that concerning John the Baptist. He's in prison.

He sends messengers. The messengers deliver... Jesus responds, then the... They depart. Jesus gives a a kind of a declaration to the group there, and then he gives some, admonition, I will say, at the at the very end.

Observations there. Denzel? John's doubting. Yep. Yep.

Yep. Yep. Good point. John's doubt. Yep.

Other other things you notice in this little section? Devin? Yeah. But it gives him nothing new. Right.

He just reaffirms what John has already been hearing that he's becoming one. Gotcha. Reaffirms what's happening. Yep. We got...

We can take one or two more if you got them. Yep.

Yeah. Yeah.

Good point. Yeah. Like what what could he have done? Yeah. Yeah.

So good. Any other final observations or we'll move we'll we'll move on? I know there's some more Stewing out there. Oh, Josh. Right.

Right. Yeah. Yeah. That's good point. Excellent point.

Excellent point. Yeah. That's true. Alright. Good.

I have one more. Yes. Don, go ahead. When John was first questioned, it's just interesting to note that the questioning was whether he was in the side or not. Right.

Yeah. Yeah. And I had enjoyed the thought one of those early up in the

fourth chapter.

Yep. Right. Yeah. And so I I just enjoyed that thought that he was really, really saying, woah. Yeah.

Yeah. Yeah. And it's interesting too that among among the things that Jesus tells him, he he ends in saying, tell them that the poor... The gospel is preached to the poor. You know, like, I mean, the to heal a blind man or to make a layman a layman whole like that's wow.

The gospel preached to the poor, that doesn't seem like as dramatic or like, you know, it's like, but tell him the gospel is being preached to the poor. And that's in that John chapter four or Luke chapter four as well. So we've got these things that are going on. And so there... We gotta save Roger some some of chapter seven, but he gave me permission to to get into the last scene.

21:12 Act four: The woman at Simon's house

That's the fourth that's the fourth act in this chapter. Now, let's step back a little bit and this is this is where it gets exciting for consecutive bible study. Alright? Because chapter six, we've just come out of chapter six and I'm going to give you four four keywords that help us remember what happened in chapter six, okay? First one is Pharisee.

You see how it starts with the F? No, it's it's a P. Yeah. Alright. Pharisee.

Alright. So, you got the Pharisees. What are they doing? They're like trying to trip up Jesus. They're in direct opposition with Jesus.

Tim had that section in in when when he taught there about the Jesus and his followers violating the Sabbath day, you know? So, the Pharisees are trying to trip him up all the way through. So, that's the first thing. Then, we see the second P is pray. Jesus prayed.

He went up on the mountain to pray. He's in his earthly ministry and he's getting ready to choose the 12 that are going to follow him closely, okay? So, Pharisees, opposition, prayed, communion, Christ and the father, communion. Then picking. He picked out the 12.

Right? And then the fourth thing is preaching the sermon on the plane. And boy, did he bring some zingers. Right? We heard that from Chris.

These these things that the blessed and the woes, the hard teachings. Devin continued in that. I mean, look, he's preaching. Love your enemy. Hard, hard message to...

And this is what Jesus is doing. Now, and then we we... He comes and he ends that with that little analogy about the the man that built his house on the rock, the man that built his house on the stone. The the the hot the house on the rock stood firm. The house on the sand.

Everybody do it together. Went, splat, right? Right. So, this is his bet. This is his preaching.

Pharisees, praying, picking, and preaching. We're moving in chapter seven. I'm going to give you four Ws but I'm going to I'll get back to that if I forget. Somebody remind me but let's connect it. Look at this.

Jesus is preaching. That's the last thing he's doing in chapter six. He's preaching. He's given forth the the word. And what do we...

What's the first thing that we come to in chapter seven? The first thing we come to chapter seven is the centurion and he realizes that he is unworthy. That's the result of preaching. Conviction. I am unworthy.

The the Jews thought he was worthy, but he said, but as he got before Jesus, oh no, I am not worthy. He understands the authority. He understands Christ's authority. The authority of of this god visiting the people. God in the flesh.

Here is a here is god before me and I'm unworthy. Need healing. Circumstances are outside my control. God is worthy. I am unworthy.

That's the first thing. Second scene, what happens? There's salvation pictured right there. The first step of salvation was to determine, I cannot save myself. I am unworthy.

I am... Since penalty had rest on me. God's authority, he can forgive sins. The... This is the this is the this is the transformation.

Ephesians describes it this way. We were dead in our trespasses and sins, but God, who is rich in mercy, has made us alive. Jesus just walked up. He touches the coffin and he says, son, arise. That's the power of the regeneration.

That's you and I coming to the point of like, I need a savior. Jesus is there for the savior. And I forgot to mention in scene one, what was the determining factor that got Jesus' attention? Faith. You see how it all builds that right there?

I'm unworthy. Jesus is worthy. I've got faith in Christ and and and then faith gets his attention and he raises someone from the dead. Never been done before. He raises this young man from the dead.

That's the salvation. That's salvation right there. Third scene, this is it. Look, look, this is our Christian life. Tell me if this is not your experience.

You came to a point. If you if you know Jesus Christ as your savior, you came to a point one day that you realized I am unworthy. My sin is on me. I need a savior and Jesus is the solution to my sin problem. You came to that realization.

Jesus, I accept you as savior. Your faith was your your you place your faith in Jesus and he responded. He said, wow. He marveled and he says, I see faith saving faith in this individual. I'm gonna respond.

I'm gonna take them from darkness to light. I'm gonna take them from death to life. Now, we're on this Christian walk. Right? Now, we're on this Christian like, okay, like the disciples, follow me.

Now, we're following Jesus. But what happens? We're in the Christian life, scene three, John the Baptist. Jesus, is this right? Are you sure?

You want me to do what? I don't know. Doubting. Okay. Will you relate to that?

Questioning God? Like, what was that song? Nobody ever told me there'll be days like these. You know, they're like, wait a minute. I thought I I thought I was following Jesus, and we're good.

But you find yourself sitting in a prison cell. You see, John, this is what in any regular prison cell. This is a dungeon. It's probably dark in there. Now he had access to visitors, and we know that we we know that because he's communicating with the disciples and you know what?

I'm John was was the last of the prophets. And so we kind of classify him even though he's in the New Testament. We kind of grip him with the Old Testament prophets, right? And so here he is. What knowledge does he have?

Jesus hasn't been on the cross yet. John's got the the the knowledge, the the kind of the same thrust as the Old Testament prophets had and so, yes, he knows there's a becoming messiah. Yes, John was the one that that left in his mother's womb when he heard Mary in the presence of Mary and Jesus in in Mary's womb. Yes, he had seen Jesus. Yes, he had seen the miracles but you know what?

Something else John had done? He read his scripture. Don already referred to it in back in Luke chapter four when he says, Jesus goes back to a prophecy prophecy in Isaiah. Now, guarantee you, John studied Isaiah. John knew Isaiah.

I mean, look, he's out in the wilderness with just eating honey and locust and he didn't care about his wardrobe, right? He spent a lot of time alone preparing. He was a preacher of righteousness and he was he's he spoke well enough and informative enough, knowledgeable enough to stand up against the religious leaders and get their attention and say, wow, this guy knows what he's talking about and you know what he read in Isaiah?

Yeah. The blind are gonna see. Yes, the the lame are gonna walk again. Even the dead are going to be raised. He read this but you know what else he read?

In Isaiah, look it up. It says, that he will he will bring an army. He also read in there very clearly that he will set the prisoners free. John's prison. John's wondering, Jesus, you told me you're held free.

You told me I'd be set free. This is... It's valid. It's real.

Look.

Okay. He didn't know that that was referring to the second coming. Right? He... He's got a portion of it.

He didn't quite understand all of God's plan. Oh, and Jesus. Look how tender he is. Tell John. Tell John.

Yes. The blind are seen. The lame are walking. Tell John that the gospel is being preached to the poor. He didn't say...

Well, he

just didn't reference the prisoners. He didn't reference the army. He just says, blessed are those who are not offended by me. And let me say it in a little bit different different way. Blessed are those that don't lose faith, don't lose trust, don't lose hope.

Blessed are those that just keep their eyes focused on me and stick with me even if it doesn't make sense to you. Doubting. The John, you know, say, okay, let me stay true to my little what I told you we were going to do. Chapter seven, the gospel is being like the... This realization scene one.

God is worthy. I'm unworthy. Faith toward God gets his attention. Salvation happens. The widow, just like the widow's son being raised, salvation happens.

God does this. God does all the raising. Widow didn't have to do anything. Son didn't have to do anything. God does all this.

New life is all in God as a result of faith. Then there's this aspect of living the Christian life, and doubting sets in. Trial set in, doubting sets in. Questioning sets in. Now look, it's not wrong to question.

John's not rebuked questioning. It's okay to question. James says, if you lack wisdom, ask of god. It's okay to question. But there will be trials that are above you.

There will be trials that you don't understand and and that's where... I think that's where John was. That little section ends with wisdom is justified of her children. Blessed are those that stick with the program, stick... That's keep their faith...

They just keep their eyes focused on Jesus. Yeah. You you want me to love my enemies? I'll I'll I'll do that. I'm gonna do I'm gonna do things that don't make sense, but you're...

This is your instruction. And then the fourth thing, the fourth scene, worship. Worship. The lady's falling at his feet. You see that cycle?

Jesus preached. People realize he's worthy, I'm unworthy. They act... They exercise their faith. Christ saves, regenerates.

We live the Christian life. There's doubting, there's trial, there's circumstances, there's trouble. But we stick with it and we realize, wow, he is in control. He does have a plan. He does love me.

He is conforming me to my... Into his image. I worship. I worship. That's the...

34:37 What the Lord has for us

One is authority. Somebody mentioned it. Authority. And we're we're going to ask ourselves this question, do I recognize God's authority in my life? Do I recognize God as authority?

Do I recognize God's authority in my life? Do I think I know better than God? God's authority. Would would I align myself with the religious leaders as like, this was their problem all along. They didn't think they...

They thought they were worthy. They said, look, he's like one of us. He's worthy for you to help him. Jesus says, I've call... I've come to I've come to heal the sick.

I've come to heal those that are in need. Recognize our... Recognize God's authority, recognize our need. I'm unworthy. I told you that I would give you four w's to remember chapter seven by.

The first w is wow. Wow. Jesus marveled. Right? He marveled at at the faith of the centurion.

That's a wow. He also... Then then the other wow is he... This is the first person he ever raised from the dead. The widow...

The son... The widow's son, the first... This is a wow. So a double a double wow. There's a wow for each w in wow.

The second the second one is wonder. Second w is wonder. You had him wondering. You had John the Baptist wondering with valid reason. Then the third w is wisdom.

The wise man built his house upon the rock. John lacked wisdom and he asked of God. Wisdom is justified of her children. Wisdom and the fourth one's worship. So the word for us as we think about scene one, God's authority, my unworthiness.

And notice the word... I almost said the phrase. Jesus said, I have not recognized so great a faith. Great faith. That's the third lesson for us.

Great. Do I have great faith? Great faith. He's worthy. I'm unworthy.

My faith. Then what's the lesson with us in this scene two? What's the word the Lord has for us this morning? I'm going to take it back to compassion. Highlight the word compassion.

It's Jesus is... Like he sees this woman, he sees this procession coming for him, he sees the son laying dead in the casket, and he was moved with compassion. He had great compassion toward her. Hey. You know what?

When we recognize that I'm unworthy, sometimes we're afraid to come. We read about it who had that... I think Ray had the paralytic man. Right? And so they let him down from the roof.

And and so like, was this guy scared to even approach Jesus? Because the first thing he says, thy sin be forgiven thee. And and it could have been like that they the friends could have been saying like, hey, we want we want to help you get to Jesus so you could be healed and and the paralytic man could have been like, you know what? No, I'm unworthy. I've done x y and z.

I can't go to Jesus. I I can't. Sometimes our sin keeps us away from making the approach to Jesus that we need. You know what? His heart was moved with compassion.

He didn't blast the paralytic. He said your sins are forgiven. He doesn't say to the to the to the centurion, hey, goofball, gentile, you're... Who do you think you are? I mean, you want me to do that?

What? I I got better things. He doesn't do that. His his compassion toward him. This woman, she doesn't even ask.

He... But he was moved with compassion. He saw the grief. He loved her. He loved...

He he wanted to show, hey, this is what new life is. He was moved with compassion. And that's a lesson for us. Christ is compassionate. God is compassionate.

39:58 Lesson five: Wonder

There's things that are going on in our group that we don't understand. And we might be like, John. John, God, you told us if we would keep Christ preeminent, that we would be doing what we're supposed to be doing. You told us if we would have plurality of leadership that that this would be a good... You told us if we would meet together every week and remember you, this would be a good thing.

But like, it's not quite working out like we thought. What's going on? Are we doing it right? We start to question, you see. We start to question.

We don't have enough money in the bank. We don't... I mean, you fill in the we need more kids. We need more of that. We thought it would be different.

The the message for us is John questioned and maybe he doubt... He did doubt. The scripture is is clear that he doubted and he questioned, but he lacked wisdom. The message for us is to to ask of God. To ask of God and say, look, we're...

We don't understand this. And wait for his answer. Wait for his answer. His answer will come back. His answer will be his word explained to us.

Let's bring these questions that we have, these matters that we have, these things that cause us doubt or wonder. Let's bring them to the Lord Jesus. John did a great thing. Look at that... All the positives he did.

He he had a question. He went to Jesus. He waited for the response. Jesus responded with the word. And that that was John's that was John's response.

Go your way. Tell... The response he got from Jesus. Go your way. Tell John what things you have seen and heard.

How that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to... The the dead are raised and to the poor, the gospel is preached. And remind John, blessed is he who shall not be offended in me. Blessed is he who doesn't lose trust and confidence in me. Blessed is he that realizes that my ways are higher than your ways.

Blessed is he that says, God, this doesn't make sense to me, but I'm gonna trust you anyway. And wisdom will be justified of all her children. Our heavenly father, we we pray this morning as we consider these different scenes in this this chapter. And, father, we certainly we certainly would, be so thankful that you provided a way of salvation for us, and and we... We're we're happy that we can...

That we count ourselves as like disciples of the Lord Jesus, that followers, Christ followers. And boy, can we relate more than we realize to John the Baptist sitting in prison, wondering, doubting, questioning. Father, we pray we pray that that we would this morning, we'd look through this chapter and we see that you respond to faith. You respond to faith. We might not have it all right, but you're so compassionate with us.

44:22 Final prayer

Amen.
