Outline and transcript

0:00 Good morning. Good morning. Alright. Good to see everyone.

Good morning. Good morning. Alright. Good to see everyone.

Open your bibles to Acts chapter two.

Open your bibles to Acts chapter two. I'm assuming that everybody here believes in miracles. Am I right when I say that? Do you believe in miracles? Well, two weeks ago two weeks ago in in Mexico, Debbie Boss drank coffee.

How about that? And then and then and then I said, sister, why did you do it? She says, because he brews, and I wanna be like him. Yes. Good to see.

Good to see. It's good to see people wanting to be that Christ. That's good. That's good. Very good.

Let's go to Acts chapter two to begin. We're gonna be looking at the the different titles and declarations that the Bible says about the Lord Jesus Christ. We're gonna start with chapter two, and we're bay... We're we're specifically gonna be looking at the title Lord, though we're gonna look at a few others, but that's that's the... We're gonna zero in on.

Acts two and verse 32, this Jesus, God raised again two and thirty two, Acts two thirty two, to which we are all witnesses. Therefore, having been exalted to the right hand of God and having received from the father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured forth this which you both see and hear. For it was not David who ascended into heaven, but he himself says, the Lord said to my Lord, sit at my right hand until I make thine enemies a footstool for thy feet. Therefore, let all of the house of Israel know for certain that God has made him both, and here it is, Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified. Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart.

Amen. So as you know, Jesus was on the earth. He he lived his life. He did his miracles. He did everything.

And he was saying that he was God, that he was gonna raise from the dead. And they rejected him, crucified him. He sure indeed did raise from the dead. And then Peter starts to preach his first message and the the first thing he's saying is, you are witnesses that Jesus rose from the dead. You can see his tomb.

You you know it's true. That one that you crucified that you thought was just a a a prophet or or or that you'd rejected, he is now declared lord and Christ. Now what does the word Lord mean? From from the Baker Dictionary of Theology, Lord Kurios is the Greek word. It means master, Lord, and implies sovereign authority.

In the Old Testament, Lord denotes the active exercise of his power over the world and men as the creator and ruler, the giver of life and death. Thus, Lord is a term expressive of sovereign authority of the most high. In the New Testament, curios is use of Jesus. It is saying clearly that Jesus is God. Again, Baker Dictionary of Theology, and he continues by his resurrection and ascension.

Jesus is exalted to lordship. The God is the term of pure exaltation, while the Lord carries with it more expressly the idea of sovereign rulership in actual exercise, evoking obedient service. Lawrence Richards says this in his expository dictionary of Bible words, to recognize Jesus as Lord is to acknowledge his deity that he is God. That he is God. So basically what Peter is saying in his first sermon is this Jesus whom you rejected who you thought was not the Messiah was was not the one he indeed now has been declared to be Lord the authority the supreme ruler he is God.

4:46 Jesus is Christ, the Messiah, the anointed one

So so in other words, the Bible is saying once again that Jesus is indeed the Messiah and the Messiah had to be a descendant of David. Yeah. And he was proved to be that through his genealogical records that Jesus is the Messiah because he came from the line of David. He was the one that that was the savior of the world. Not only that, but verse four, who was declared the son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

So in other words, what he's saying in this is I like to quote Rory on this. The resurrection of Jesus is the mighty proof of his deity, and this is declared by the Holy Spirit. So the word Lord is also used here, as you notice, in verse four, Jesus Christ, our Lord. The word Lord is used 700 times in the New Testament. The Lordship deity and sovereignty of Jesus was and is the central is is central to the true faith.

So there's four titles given to Jesus here in this particular text. Number one, he's the son of God. The second member of the Trinity who became a man. He was declared to be the son of God. In other words, he was declared to be God by the resurrection or because of the erection resurrection from the dead.

He proved that he was God. Second, he's called Jesus, which means savior. He saves his people from sin. Again, he's called Christ, the anointed as savior, king and priest, and he's also called Lord, sovereign ruler. He is God, and he rules the world.

So we see then that in acts he was called Lord and Christ, the sovereign ruler and the Messiah. Right here in this passage, he's called the son of God. He's called Jesus. He's called Christ, and he's called Lord. In first Timothy six fifteen, look what he's called there.

Turn with me quickly. If not, I'll I'll read it and you can just follow along. First Timothy six fifteen. Well, verse 14 for for context, starting with the second part, until the appearing of our Lord, there he's called Lord again, Jesus Christ, which he will bring about at the proper time. He who is the blessed and the only sovereign king of kings and Lord of Lord.

So once again, the scriptures declares him to be the Lord, the the sovereign God who has supreme authority. And he would bring about at the proper time. He's gonna bring them this blessed and only sovereign king of king and lord of lords. So it emphasizes again the fact that Jesus is God, that he's declared the the sovereign authority and he's gonna come back and he is going to be the king of all kings and he is the lord of lords. If anyone has any position of authority, he is above them.

9:00 Jesus is the eternal, immortal King

So to be eternal, you had to be God. So he is the eternal king. And notice that also that he's called immortal. To be immortal, you have to be God. He's invisible, but he became a man, the only God.

So Jesus is directly called God here. Be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. Amen. Now I want you to notice that don't go there in Revelation nineteen eleven.

He's called the faithful and he's called true. He also said, am the way, the truth, and the life. So the faithful savior who is the only truth is what the scriptures are saying in Revelation nineteen thirteen. He's called the word of God. And John one one is also called the word of God.

In John one eighteen, he is called the only begotten. No man has seen God at any time. The only begotten who is in the bosom of the father, he has explained them. Now this this term in the bosom means near the father's heart, near the father's heart. Because, you know, those are some terms that we don't use anymore.

You know, I I was in the bosom of my father. You would look at me like, you are right. But what it means is I was near to my father's heart. So Jesus, no one has ever seen God the father, but Jesus who is God also, the only begotten God who's in the who's in the bosom of the father has explained him because God who became a man can explain what God the father is like. Now turn with me to Hebrews chapter one.

Hebrews chapter one. Hebrews chapter one and look at verse eight. Look at verse eight. These are the different declarations that the Bible makes about Jesus. Now this is God the father speaking about Jesus, his son.

But of the son, he says, in other words, God says this about his son. Thy throne, oh God, is forever and ever. And the righteous scepter is a scepter of his kingdom. So what does God the father call the son? What does he call him?

Say it together with me. He calls him God. Right? Your throne. Oh God.

So God the father directly calls Jesus God. Put them in the same level. Jesus, you are God. And not only that, but you you have a throne in heaven, but you're gonna come to earth and you're gonna rule on the earth. And that throne that you're have on the earth is is going to be eternal because after the thousand years, it's gonna continue on.

So thy throne, oh God, is forever and ever. And the righteous scepter is a scepter of his kingdom. In other words, this is saying is when you do return and you do establish a kingdom and you do rule the world as as God as that righteous king, the God man who returns, when you do rule, you're going to rule in righteousness. How many kings do you know today that rule in righteousness? Even even good kings put a little bit in their pockets and all of a sudden become richer than they were before.

But when it comes to Jesus, absolute righteousness. Notice notice what it says about him when he's ruling. He's going to be righteous. Septim means that that stick thing that they have. Right?

Those are things that we don't... We're not used to anymore. That talks about his power, but it's going to be righteous. Thou verse nine has loved righteousness and hated lawlessness because Jesus is pure and holy and loves righteousness, and he hates anything that's lawless. So there's going to be no more cheating.

There's gonna be no one put in jail for the wrong reason. There's gonna be no one doing injustice. There's gonna be no racism. The Lord is going to rule and it's gonna be a perfect rule and a perfect kingdom that he will rule. Therefore, God, thy God has anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy companions.

14:01 God gives Jesus three more titles

You, Lord, you, Lord Jesus, not only are you god, not only are you gonna... Are you ruling the world in righteousness, but you are are the lord created the heavens and the earth. You're the one that created everything. So what is he saying? You lord created everything.

You are god. So you're God. You are God. You are God and you are righteousness. You are God and you created everything, the heavens and the earth.

So so as the bible then puts great emphasis on the fact that Jesus is God, that he is the Lord, that he is the creator of the heavens and the earth to the work of his hands. Then he goes on and right here is expressing the fact that heavens and earth are going to pass away and so are men. Verse 11, they will perish, but thou remaineth. Jesus, you remain. They all will become old as a garment and as a mantle, thou will roll them up.

And as a garment, they will all also be changed. But thou art the same and thy years were were not come to an end. So God, the father then caused Jesus, Lord, curious God, the supreme ruler, supreme authority. Jesus is called the Lord, the creator, and he's also called the eternal God who does not change. God has never sinned.

He never does evil. He's always been righteous. He's always been holy. And our culture changes, our times change, but God remains consistently pure and holy. And if he does change, then he stops being God.

And so the Bible talks about the fact that heaven and earth is gonna pass away. Roll them up like a garment. I'm done with you. Now I got my new creation coming. The new heavens and the new earth, but God is consistent.

He's the same. Your years will not come to an end. Now now Philippians now Philippians, you know that we we can't do this study without going to Philippians. Amen? Amen?

Yeah. So Philippians two and look at verse... Let's go. We'll start with the nine. Therefore also God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name that at the name of Jesus, every knee shall should bow of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is what?

Lord. Curios. The supreme authority. The God who has ultimate authority to to the glory of God, the father. And so right now in heaven, the angels and all those created beings including all the redeemed that are up there already are bowing to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Those who are on earth, you and I who have been redeemed and have been born again and brought into the family of God right now, we bless the Lord Jesus and we say that he is our Lord. He is the supreme authority. He's God And and we bow to him and and we want to serve him and worship our creator. And the the day is coming. And in my opinion, those who are in hell right now who reject the Lord Jesus are seeing him in glory.

Your throne, oh Lord, sit at my right hand. They're already saying, wow, he is the Lord. And they're and they're bowing to him from the pit of hell. Every tongue, everything created is going to bow to the Lord Jesus. By confessing Jesus as Lord, the Christian community was also recognizing that he has dominion over the world.

And as a result of Jesus' sovereignty, one day every created being will acknowledge Jesus Christ as Lord. Presently, all powers on earth and in heaven are subject to Jesus and must serve him. For he has been elevated to the position of curios, and he has absolute sovereignty. Consequently, Richards in his commentary says this, Jesus has universal authority. Jesus has sovereign authority.

19:18 Jesus has personal authority

Notice, far above, speaking of Jesus, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion and every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in the age to come. The university authority of Jesus. Not only that, but he has sovereign sovereign authority. Go to first Peter with me. Turn there.

Chapter three. This is important. First Peter three and look at look at verse 15. Look at verse 15. Now the context is Christian suffering.

The context... Look at verse 14 just for context. But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed. And do not fear their intimidation and do not be troubled, but sanctify Christ as what? As Lord, there's your word, as curious in your heart, always being ready to make a defense to anyone everyone who asked you to give an account for the hope that is in you yet with gentleness and reverence.

In other words, when when when somebody persecutes you and somebody laughs at you because you're living righteously, when things go wrong and yet you're living for God, what do you do in your heart? You say, Lord, you are the ultimate authority. You're the supreme authority. I sanctify you as Lord in my heart, and I bow to whatever you're allowing because you are the supreme authority over my life. And rather than resent, I bow.

Rather than resent, I worship you because you are the sovereign authority. Now go to Romans 14. Not only that, but he's also the personal authority. Romans 14. And we're gonna start with we're gonna start with verse seven.

Just to emphasize this reality, for for not one of us lives for himself and not one dies for himself. For if we live, we live for the Kurios, the Lord. Or if we die, we die for the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord's. For to this sin Christ died and lived again that he might be the Curios, the supreme authority, both of the dead and of the living.

Wow. So he's got personal authority over our lives when we're saved. We don't live for ourselves no more anymore. We live for for him. Then he's got complete authority, Colossians chapter one.

Colossians chapter one complete authority and verse sixteen and seventeen, the most beloved passage. We never get tired of reading it as believers. For by him, all things were created both in the heavens and on the earth, visible and visible whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities, all things have been created by him and for him. And he is before all things and in him all things hold together. And he is also the head of the body, the church, and he is the beginning, the firstborn from among the dead that he himself might come to have first place in everything, in everything.

23:06 Signs of being touched by the Spirit

Unless the Holy Spirit gives us understanding and removes the veil, I can't even say Jesus is Lord. Look, I was speaking to a man and he tells me Jesus is my king. I said, that's good. He's my king, but he's also my Lord because he's king of kings and Lord of Lords. I bow to him as my God.

He goes, no, no, he's just the king. He was just a good prophet. I said, well, you're preaching another Jesus because the Jesus of the Bible is the king of kings and the lord of lords and you can't say it unless you have the holy spirit. The holy spirit enables us to be able to say, yes, Jesus is lord. And there's no way I can curse him.

There's no way I can look at him as any lower than the ultimate supreme authority, the God of Gods, the Lord of Lords, the King of Kings. There's no way you would ever speak down about Jesus or curse his name. The Holy Spirit won't allow that. First Corinthians eight and chapter five and verse five. First Corinthians eight and verse five, right there in the same book.

For even if there are so called gods, whether in heaven or on earth, as indeed there are many gods and many lords. So people worship all kinds of gods everywhere around the world and lords. They they they bow to them. Yet for us, for the people who are in Christ, for believers, there is but one God, the father from whom are all things and we exist for him. And one Lord, there's our word again, Curios, one ultimate authority, Jesus Christ by whom are all things and we exist through him.

So again, there's God the Father, God the Son, and then God the Holy Spirit. And that's what the Bible teaches. That's what it proclaims. Jesus is Lord. The confession of of Thomas in John chapter 20 and verse 27.

I'm just gonna say to you, you know, Thomas was, I'm not gonna believe unless I see him in my... And I put my finger in his in his in his hand and in his side. And then the Lord appears to him and he says, Thomas, come over here. Come on. Put put your put your finger in there.

Put your put your... Touch it. And what does he do? Right there he got saved. He bows down and what does he say?

He says, my my Lord and my God. He didn't just call him God. My Lord. My Lord, you are the ultimate supreme authority. I bow to you and you are God.

To the angels Jesus is Christ the Lord, Luke two eleven. To Peter he is the Lord of all, acts ten thirty six. For Paul and James, he is the lord of glory. First Corinthians two eight, James two one. For John, he's the lord of lords.

Revelation seventeen fourteen. For Thomas, he is my lord and my god. John twenty twenty eight. Now go to Romans chapter 10. Notice how the text puts it.

Verse nine, that if you confess with your mouth, Jesus as Lord. What's the Greek word? Kurios. Jesus Lord. And you believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead because remember, according to Romans chapter one, the proof, the declaration of the Holy Spirit was Jesus is God because of the resurrection.

So if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you shall be saved. For with a heart a man believes resulting in righteousness and with the mouth he confesses resulting in salvation. And then verse 13 for whoever will call upon the name of the Lord will be saved. You will be saved. I'm gonna quote John MacArthur here.

It is with the mouth that a man confesses. When pauses to confess, it has the root word of saying the same thing, of being in agreement and accord with someone. The person who confesses Jesus as Lord agrees with God, the father, and that confession mixed with genuine trust brings salvation. So in other words, when the Holy Spirit is working in our hearts and I get to the point where I see Jesus and I see him in all of his glory, I see him resurrected and exalted and lifted up. Then I say, God, I agree with you.

I agree with you, God, that Jesus is Lord. I confess it with my mouth because I believe it in my heart. And when you confess that with your mouth, the Bible says you shall be saved because you're agreeing with God who Jesus is. Let me ask you something. Have you agreed with God and confessed with your mouth that Jesus is Lord?

It's not intellectual knowledge. It's not coming to church. It's saying, God, I agree with you. That after the crucifixion, he was buried and for three days. And then on the third day, he rose from the dead.

And then as he rose, the Holy Spirit proclaimed it. He is God. And now I agree with you, and I confess it with my mouth. Jesus is Lord. Have you done that?

30:03 Confess and believe to be saved

And how beautiful was this morning to sing those songs. Wasn't it amen? To sing to our Lord and to worship him and to acknowledge him that, oh God, oh Lord Jesus, we agree with the father that you are the Lord and we bow in reverence to you. Father, bless your word to our hearts. And I pray that today someone would have believed and confessed Jesus is Lord.
