0:00 Framing the message: mental skills and attitude

Alright, so I got an issue here. Got to turn that over. Alright, so what I need to do is I need to frame what I'm doing today. So here we go. Here's the frame.

A week ago, was at... So it was last Friday, I was at in Columbus, Ohio for the state track and field championships. We had one of our athletes that was participating there. And I got a call from somebody and said, Bob, do you have the ability to do this next Sunday? And what he asked me to do was to take a look at basically what I do for a living, right, which is I'm a mental skills coach.

I coach several athletic teams. And at one school, I'm the mental skills coach for entire athletic team. And how do we take these skills that I teach from a mindset standpoint and how do we bring these into a specific area of the Bible? Alright. So that's what I was asked to do.

And it was kind of interesting because at that same time, that Friday, I just got done giving a presentation to a bunch of high school football players over the topic. And I was engaged in writing a chapter of my next book on the same topic. Alright? So I say next book because I have a book that's supposed to be coming out next month. My editor says it's getting ready to go but it was supposed to be out last June.

So anyhow, we'll see how it goes. So, I said yes, I would do it. Now, it's important for you to understand that I believe that the Word of God is true, inerrant, and I believe everything that it says and I know the Word of God can fix any issues that I have, fix any problems that I have. It is what I base my life on. You're going to hear some things possibly that cause you to tilt your head to the neck or your neck to the left a little bit that you might say, Bob, this is psychology.

Everything that I do, I believe is fully biblical. Okay? So I wanted to give you that up front. You understand? Are we fair?

We're good to go on that? Now, we do have lunch after and I am more than happy to discuss any of this with anybody that wants to after. And if you want to give me a phone call in the future, you can do that as well. So what I do basically for a living is I help people become fully alive. Alright.

Fully alive. We engage in different aspects to become fully alive. I have a 13 step process in place that we go through. Now, this right here is a quote from Saint Irenaeus. He was a contemporary of Polycarp.

Alright. Polycarp is mentioned in the Bible. And what he said is the glory of God is man fully alive. Okay? Now, we're gonna pause there and we're gonna get our first lesson.

Come on up here. Joey had it, right? Alright. So, what you have in your hands there, Joey? What kind of ball is it?

A ball. A colorful ball. Okay. What do we call this type of a ball? Beach ball.

A beach ball. Okay. Hold that up right there. Alright. Hold it up in front of your face.

There we go. What colors do you see? Yellow and white. Yellow and white. I see green and blue.

Devin, what colors do you see? I see green and orange. Green and orange. You got a guess? Red and blue.

Alright. So the idea here is that this is an object lesson about perspective. It all depends where you are as to what you're going to see. Alright? So I'm gonna be talking about perspective as we move along.

But it's important to understand perspective when it comes to this Bible verse as well. The glory of God is man fully alive. Your perspective... That's not a Bible verse. I'm sorry.

That's a quote from Irenaeus. Your perspective on what that means is going to be totally different than mine. I know for a fact that there's less than three out of a 100 people that have the same mindset personality that I have. Okay? So there's probably, with the exception of Andy, Andy is the closest one to me, as far as this crazy mindset.

Nobody sees things the way that I do. Alright? Understand that if you're married you have a spouse. You have two different perspectives. Alright.

Are we there? We all understand that? Alright. So you can sit down. So that's Saint Irenaeus.

Now, the interesting thing here is I'm going to use a verse because it's my perspective. Right? So my perspective of the glory of God is man fully alive is John ten ten. Right? Jesus said, I have come so that you might have life and you might have it more abundantly.

4:41 Defining an abundant life

I I I have an abundant life. It's it's not finances. Alright. You... So what is an abundant life?

So what I what I do when I talk about an abundant life, I talk about this this aspect. So so Andy, you're you're a gardener, right? Alright. So do you have any fruit trees?

I do not. Well, mulberry bush.

I don't know. What's a mulberry? I just know the song Round and Round the Mulberry Bush. The Monkey Chase the Weasel. And I was singing the blackberries.

Alright. Do you have blackberries? Yes. Okay. You have blackberries.

Alright. So what is your goal with those blackberries? Okay. But to do... Is your goal to fertilize them, care for them, treat them the way you need to treat them so that they are abundant.

Right? So when I talk about... When I think from my perspective of an abundant life, it's it is doing or living in a way that God is calling me to live. It's serving in a way that God is calling me to serve. It's doing for a living what God is calling me to do for a living.

Alright. So that, in my perspective, is what an abundant life is. Alright. We... Everybody good on that one?

Alright. Abundant life. Now. Alright. So, what, okay, that's the frame.

So this is my topic. Mental skills in developing a Christ like attitude. Mental skills in developing a Christ like attitude. How can we have a Christ like attitude? Now, it's interesting.

I wish I could capture what our brother said at the worship service this morning, what our brother said at the worship service last Sunday, what our speaker Doug said last Sunday. I wish I could capture that, put it into a, mp4, edit it a little bit and my entire message is there. Alright. So I'm going to do my best to give this message but I'm telling you, this stuff has all been said. It's all been illustrated.

And it starts off with this Bible verse right here, which our brother Denzel read this morning. Yeah, so just five through eight.

Philippians two verse five, let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus, who being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made himself of no reputation,

Now that's an example of the attitude that Christ had. Do you not believe that if you had that attitude, you could live an abundant life? Let me ask you this. Do you think Christ lived an abundant life? Do you?

What was His purpose? Did he? Obediently? Served his purpose. He lived an abundant life.

So this is something that we have to learn from. We have to learn how do we live an abundant life. Right? These these verses show us what Christ's attitude is. Now, Denzel's version said mind.

Some versions say, have this mind in you that was also in Christ Jesus. Some say, have this mind set in you that is also in Christ Jesus. Some have let this attitude, let this attitude be in you that is also in Christ Jesus. Here's another interesting thing. This isn't Bob patting himself on the back day, but anyhow.

8:53 Attitude is everything: Charles Swindoll

This is what Charles Swindoll says attitude is to me. So the topic of my radio spot this week is attitude, having the right attitude. So this is what I use from Charles Swindoll. So this is Charles Windall speaking. Attitude to me is more important than facts.

It's more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, then appearance, gift, or skill. It will make or break a company, a church, a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react. And so it is with you.

We are in charge of our attitudes. Would you agree? We need to understand, we need to realize that when somebody pulls their car out in front of me as I'm driving down the road, and I respond in Bob typical fashion. I'm not going to say what that is. Most of you know me, so you could only imagine what that is.

I wave and say, have a nice day. But I am totally in control of it. Do you think that person that pulled out in front of me really knows who I am or cares about me at all? Yet, that attitude, that response that I give can ruin my day, it could ruin my wife's day. Right?

It can ruin my car. There's a lot of things that it could ruin. But I am 100% in control of that. What somebody else does to me, I am not in control of. But like Chuck Swindoll says, I am 100% in control of how I respond.

100% in control of how I respond. So I talk to football players all the time. And I apologize for using the sports metaphors, that's just the way I am. So we've got these football players. One of the best football players that I ever coached, he's in the Marines now by the way, He got blindsided.

He got smacked down. He got up and he is throwing. He got kicked out of the game. He got a 15 yard penalty. He got kicked out of the game and the team lost that game.

At that point in time, they were ahead. It was almost all the way through the game. He's in control of his attitude. He made a choice that wasn't the best response. Actually, it wasn't the best response for the situation.

So, what is your attitude? So, keep that in the back of your mind. The next thing we're going to talk about here is what exactly is mental skills. So, Bob, you say you're a mental skills coach. There are very few places that you can actually look this up because this is a term that was created about ten years ago.

It originated with the New Zealand All Blacks and it's a position that they've hired. But mental skills is defined as the set of trainable mental abilities and methods that are held to underpin successful learning performance personal and professional growth. Personal and professional growth. So that's what I'm going to be sharing with you are these mental skills that I've developed for individuals, for business owners, and for athletes in order to have the right mindset. Like I said, I believe everything that I do is biblical and this has a biblical application as well.

So, who has seen this before? Alright. Yep. Okay. So E plus R equals O.

So this is a very important equation that you need to remember. Event plus response equals outcome. Event plus response equals outcome. So an outside stimulus occurs, your phone buzzes. Alright.

Your reaction is I gotta look at it. The outcome is I just lost fifteen minutes of my life because I ended up youtubing Nancy Kerrigan or whoever. Right? Or, right, the outside stimulus occurs and you don't respond to it because you have the discipline to ignore that phone. Or you're like me because you lack discipline and you put it on silence.

I don't get any, any, notifications at all except for phone calls. So I've learned to remove that outside stimulus so it doesn't destroy my day. So E plus R equals O. Event plus Response equals Outcome. What I want to do today is I want to talk about that area that is in that plus sign.

Alright. What happens when an outside stimulus occurs prior to responding? What is going on? So, these are the mental skills that I teach to athletes, individuals and business owners in order to have the proper outcome. Right?

You understand this, right? You have experienced in your life an event where your response was probably not the best and you're still kicking yourself for the outcome today. Right? Has it happened to you or am I the only one? Alright?

I'm the only one? Just me. Alright. Well good. Well then, message over.

14:54 The process: prequel, action, sequel

So Worth has a little thing here. Okay, turn around. What is this Worth? Hold up, let everybody see it. It's a cube.

Alright. Who here knows how to solve a Rubik's Cube? Okay. See, well my hands up, because I know how to solve a Rubik's Cube. Now, a Rubik's Cube is solved, not by the brightest person in the room, but the person that knows the algorithm that it takes to solve it.

Solving the Rubik's cube is nothing more than memorizing an algorithm. Alright? It is a process. It is a process. There's a process in place to solve the Rubik's cube.

There's a process in place which starts with the prequel in order to have this mindset in you. So what I'm going to do... Who had their hand raised here? Alright. I don't know he did.

Go ahead. You solve it. Sit down. Thank you. Appreciate that.

Alright. Now, so when you're done, let us know. So, process. So now what we're going to do is what process do we need to have in place so that I can have this attitude in me that's also in Christ Jesus? The first thing first is number one, you have to have the Holy Spirit.

So if you are not born again, if you are not saved, if you have not made Christ the sole focus of your life, if you've not asked Him to indwell in you and the Holy Spirit, you cannot live a life fully alive. Okay? You can't do it. So the most important thing that needs to happen is you need to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. That's number one.

That's the most important. We also know, as a result of Romans chapter 12 verse two and Ephesians four twenty three, that we need to be transformed by what? By the renewing of our mind, right? Mental skills, the whole mind piece right there. So, that needs to happen as well.

So, we have the Holy Spirit. Once we get saved, we can be transformed by the renewing of our mind. Now, let me ask you this. Does transformation occur permanently right away never to be going through a transformation process again? No.

It is a lifelong process. Speaking of processes, awfully close. We're not making you nervous or anything. But so that whole transformation thought is a process. It's a process.

Being transformed is a process. Now, I also have up here alignment of body, mind and soul. Alignment of body, mind and soul. I get that from Jesus in Matthew twenty two thirty seven said, Jesus said, Love the Lord thy God with all your heart, your soul, and your mind. We need to be in alignment with our body, mind, and soul in order for us to live fully alive.

We need to make sure that we're dwelling where we have the right mindset. Alright? We to make sure that we are physically able to do what God is calling us to do. Right? I've seen missionaries that had to come back from their missionary journey because they weren't healthy enough to continue.

Right? So physically, we have to be in tune with our journey. Mentally, need to be in tune with our journey. And certainly, spiritually, we need to be in tune with our journey. Now, the next piece I have up there is devotional time.

19:20 Spiritual journey and daily devotion

Are you spending time in your devotions? Are you trying to learn what God is calling you to do? Are you trying to build that relationship through that devotional process? We need to do that. Alright?

My buddy Andy over here likes to sing praise songs during his devotional. I'm assuming it's during your devotional time, right? Likes to sing praise songs during his devotional time. Alright. What are we doing doing that quiet time in the morning that's putting us in a situation so that we are prepared to take on the day?

So that we are most likely going to respond to an outside stimulus so that the outcome is a positive is a positive outcome. Okay? The next word here, this is the one that everybody cringes on, meditate. Meditate. Who knows a Bible verse that says meditate in it?

Go ahead. Meditate on it. Right? Think about it. That's fine.

Right? Meditate. Right? Meditate. I love Philippians four:eight.

Whatever is pure, praiseworthy, loving, admirable, noble, true, excellent, and real, meditate on these things. Right? Where are you putting your mind? Are you spending time in the morning so that your mind is ready to take on the day? And then, be aware disruption will occur.

How you doing? What's that? Who who he turned the corner? Never turn the corner on a Rubik's cube. I was going to say that I could solve any Rubik's cube as somebody, as long as somebody doesn't go in there and twist that corner because I have no idea how to solve it when that happens.

So do you think Ruth that he twisted that corner? Okay. Disruption. Disruption, exactly right. Perfect.

Perfect timing. Perfect timing. So, know, the name of the book that's going to be coming out at the end of the month, the name of the book is Disruption. The Life and Death of a Leader. That's the name of the book.

It's only 30,000 words, a 100 pages, it's not much. But the word is disruption. Right? For those that hang around me, Andy, Andy, Denzel, Roger, I have this word disruption all the time. All the time.

All the time. Disruption happens. Listen to me. You get out of bed in the morning. You stay in the bed in the morning.

Disruption's gonna happen. There's nothing that you can do to stop that disruption. That disruption is an outside stimulus that's going to cause you to have a response. Alright? Notice I didn't say reaction.

We don't want to react because that's failure. We want to respond. So we need to realize, we need to be fully convinced that disruption is going to happen. Raise your hand if disruption has never happened in your life. The biggest disruption that happened today is somebody moved the corner on the Rubik's cube.

And now we have to figure it out. Alright, that's going to drive me nuts all day. Thank you very much. Alright, but listen to this. James one.

James chapter one, verse two-four. Consider it a joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you experience various trials, insert disruption, whenever you get disrupted, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance, and let that endurance have its full effect on you that you might be mature and complete, lacking nothing. These disruptions that come along in our life are to help us grow. That's one reason why we're there. The Lord allows them to happen.

How do you respond to those disruptions that come out? Do you fully engage those disruptions? But the important piece here, the important piece is that we need to understand that disruptions occur. Don't think that they're not. They're going to happen.

24:12 Own, order, and occupy your day

You have to own it. It's yours. It belongs to you. The Lord gave it to you. This is the day that the Lord has made.

Let us rejoice and be glad in it. Live in the day. Own the day. Don't live your day with anxiety toward what could happen in the future. Don't live your day being depressed about the decisions you made in the past.

This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it. And of course, his mercies, Christian, his mercies, they're new every day. His mercies are new every day. Okay?

This is the day. Own the day. Order it. Order the day. Spend time in devotion.

Spend time in meditation. Spend time getting your thoughts clear. Order it. Have control of it. Own order and then occupy.

Live in that day. Be part of that day. Don't disassociate from the day. Be part of it. Own order and occupy your day.

Are we done? There you go. Excellent job Ruth. So there's a process, there's a process that we go through to solve a Rubik's cube. There's a process that we go through to have the mind in Christ.

Okay. So here's the action point right here. So action. So the prequel is I've got to be prepared. The action is what do I do when x y z happens.

Alright Gabe, I understand you guys were backpacking this week, right? So Thursday was your first night at Minister Creek. What happened on Thursday night? We saw a bear. Saw a bear.

Alright. It was in your camp. Was it a raccoon or a bear? I heard it was a bear. Okay, it was a raccoon.

Now, as a backpacker myself, I've put this mindset in my mind that a bear is nothing more than a big raccoon. Right? Because that satisfies me, I guess. Bears bears are rarely territorial. If you find a bear that's territorial, you're not going to make it.

But they're rarely territorial. Fortunately, I look at the backpack that's over there and there's bear spray on there. Alright? But what I want to talk about here is this whole idea. We have a, the Lord has given us a conscious mind, a subconscious mind and an unconscious mind.

The unconscious mind helps us stay alive. Your brain has one function. What's that one function of the brain? To stay alive. The one function of your brain is to stay alive.

So, what does your brain do if all of a sudden you realize that there's a bear? Your amygdala, right, sends a signal to your sympathetic nervous system that says make adrenaline, get the blood pressure going and get out of here. Alright? That is a response to an outside stimulus that is controlled by your sympathetic nervous system that is controlled by the Lord Jesus as a result of putting in us an unconscious mind. So, when you're faced during the course of a day with an event, how are you going to react?

I do understand that we have that in us where we get aggressive, we get, we we again, we're talking about perspective. Somebody could say something to me. Their perspective is, it's not really that big of a deal. My perspective is, I can't believe you just said that to me. As a result of that perspective, alright, now I need to process that because the fight or flight response could take place.

Alright? Break for a second. The way I get my clients is I have to be a salesperson. And as a salesperson, I get objections all the time. And I know, I understand the mind, the brain good enough that an objection is an objection toward what I just talked about.

Not objection toward me. But I know that if I allow my parasympathetic or my, am I saying that right? Is it sympathetic? They allow the sympathetic nervous system to take over, the cell is gone. Because I'm just gonna argue with that person, right?

So, what we do, this is a secret, everybody. So if there's ever a salesperson that comes and wants to sell you something, this is the secret that we keep really quiet. Okay? It's called a ledge. We press pause.

29:41 Press pause: let your conscious mind catch up

I'm a, it's a process, right? I'm still working on it. The ledge I use is plantar. P P, two P's. I don't know how to spell.

P P L A N T E R. So if I need a ledge and I have been working the process. Again, it doesn't just happen. It has to be a process. I go through the P P L A N T R.

Whatever is pure, praiseworthy, loving, admirable, noble, true, excellent, and real, meditate on these things. So, I do that, I have an opportunity to catch up with my sympathetic nervous system. And now, I have an opportunity to make a decision. Right? If I make a decision without that opportunity, the decision probably is going to be something that is not good.

Alright? Here's next piece here. The next part of the action is get your mind right. Get your mind right. By the way, we've got about five minutes, but I was told I can go a little over since the food is here, right?

Got the authority, right? All right, so here's the next point here is get your mind right. All right, Gabe, here we go. Bring this over here. Get the backpack.

All right, lift it up so everybody could see it and show everybody how strong you are. How much do you think that thing weighs? At least 50 pounds. I heard it was as much as 70, but that was by the man that was carrying it up a two mile incline. Right?

Alright, so put it down. So that's a backpack. I love backpacking stories. I didn't say you can sit down. Said put it down.

Now I want you to open that up. Alright, don't pull it out yet. Are you familiar with the Appalachian Trail? The Appalachian Trail is a trail through the Appalachian Mountains. It's 2,000...

Pretty smart. It's 2,000 miles long. And the stories are awesome of people talking about going on the Appalachian Trail. They got their backpack on. This is a 105 liter backpack.

50 to 70 pounds is in it. How far can you get? Who carried this up at Minister Creek? How easy was that? It was hard.

Right, it was only two miles, but it was uphill, right? It's two miles uphill. All right, so take that first thing that's in there out of there. Please. Not, not, not, not, not, not, not, the cast iron.

So we're gonna open the mouth of this up a little bit, see. All right. Who in their right mind Hold it up high. Already admitted, we know Andy is not in their right mind, but who in their right mind would take that on a backpacking trip? You know, they make things right now that are about this big that weigh about 18 ounces.

All right. So, thank you for that illustration. Now, so listen. You and I carry backpacks through our lives. And in the backpack, we stuff things that we never are going to need again.

We we create anxiety. We create disruption in our own life. We create we create depression because of the garbage that we carry around with us. I'd used the Greek word, but I'm not going to because I did it once before and somebody said, don't ever say that again. That was my wife.

So we have to have the right mind... Yeah, you did. You have to have the right mindset. Okay? We have to take, right, two Corinthians ten fifteen, Take every thought captive.

When things are going on in our mind, we need to understand these thoughts. We need to understand where those thoughts are coming from. We need to understand where those thoughts are going to. And we need to make sure that we focus on positive positive thoughts. Alright.

When we have a backpack that's a 105 liters and there's 70 pounds in it, we're carrying around stuff that we no longer need to carry around. Or we talk to ourselves more in the course of a day than we talk to anybody else. 60,000 words a day go through our mind. What are those words telling you? The Lord created you like this, by the way.

What are those words that are... What... Every once in a while we need to tell that idiot in our mind to sit down and shut up. Alright? Because we listen to these words, we listen to what they're saying and our responses are in alignment with what we're thinking about in our own minds.

Alright? We need to realize that the brain likes stimulus, but it craves certainty. The brain likes stimulus, but it craves certainty. We need to gain control of these neuropathic, neuropathic, help me Andy, what am I missing here? These neuropathic lines in our mind that change habits.

35:52 Gain control and take thoughts captive

Alright, that goes back to James one. We need to embrace it. Disruption's going to happen. How am I going to react to the disruption? It's going to happen.

Okay? And then here's sequel. Whenever we have a situation that we're engaged in, where an outside stimulus happens and we respond and whatever that outcome is, we need to analyze that. Is this something I can change in the future? Is this something that I need to focus on?

Is it something that I need to go back and apologize for? We need to analyze our responses to outside stimulus. And that's going to help create those pathways in our brain, so that the next time we get hit with that disruption, we are going to respond in a different way. Next, take complete ownership. Take complete ownership.

Remember, it's perspective. Right? When you respond, you need to take complete responsibility for that response. Even if it is the sympathetic nervous system that is causing you to respond. Because you have an opportunity to press pause, take a breath, stand on the ledge, repeat Philippians four eight, and then go after it.

All right? You need to take complete ownership. And the last one here is, see how I put that, Andy? Embrace the disruption. All right, I've got a client that is a retired Navy SEAL.

He uses a different word. But you have to embrace what goes on, and then you have to learn from what your response was. You have to learn from what the event was that caused your response. And then you need to order your life in a way that you can become fully alive, all right? Living an abundant life with the mindset of Jesus.

Okay. Alright, so just what I want to do is I'm going go back and I want to revisit three illustrations. So go ahead with that one. The first one is perspective. We need to understand that we have our own unique perspective.

Alright, a little bit of self deprecation here. I got kicked out of more athletic events because my perspective was the right perspective, but you know, not in alignment with the official's perspective. Okay? I've changed. I've changed.

So by the grace of God, the Holy Spirit, and my wife. So we have to understand that everybody has a unique perspective. We need to appreciate everybody's perspective. Thanks. And then, the next illustration was process.

Do have a process in place to make sure that I can keep that mindset or that attitude of Christ? And then the last illustration, how much stuff are you carrying around that you need to get rid of because what it's causing you to do is causing you to make decisions that you wouldn't make if you weren't carrying around a 105 liter backpack filled with 70 pounds worth of stuff that you really don't need. Alright? So, the responsibility lies squarely on your shoulders. Whenever an outside stimulus happens, your response is your responsibility.

39:54 Prayer for Jeremy Kilby

He's married for a couple years, and at this point the doctors have absolutely no clue. He's got all kinds of tumors that are growing, and so far none of them have been cancerous, but they don't know what's causing these tumors. His name is Jeremy. Good friend, good friend of the family. So I thought today I'd close in prayer offering a prayer to Jeremy.

Let's pray. Lord, we do come before you, and we thank you for your love for us. Lord, we thank you for everything that you give us in the word that will help us in our walk of life, in everything that we do. Lord, we thank you that you're in control of everything, Lord. So I pray that we have that attitude in us, that was also in you, Lord.

That we think of ourselves not more than anybody else. So we think of ourself less, Lord. So we come before you, we pray earnestly for Jeremy Kilby. Lord, thank you for him, we thank you for what he's been in a lot of people's lives, and we just pray that, Lord, you will heal him, you'll give the doctors the insight that they need in order to figure out what this situation and these issues are. And we just pray Lord that he will continue to live and be just an awesome father to his two young daughters.

We pray this in Jesus' name, amen. Are there announcements for food?
