Outline and transcript
0:00 Mark seven, assigned verses of Mark six
Okay, so I'm I'm basically Mark seven, though I was assigned I think the last four or five verses of, four verses of Mark six. So Mark seven is gonna be on the criticism by the scribes and pharisees which led some ministry from the Lord which I hope will benefit from that same ministry. But what I wanted to do was to review and maybe even review the two stories that Denzel had feeding the 5,000 and John had walking on the waters and I just want to review them and I have a purpose to it. My purpose is that we would see, we would get this vision of the Lord Jesus and maybe the wonder of what he was and then we might see the inappropriateness of the attitudes of the scribes and pharisees and we might, there's a verse that says wisdom is justified of its children. It's kind of very much a proverb, wisdom is justified.
So basically if we're the children of God and this is a non application, if we're the children of God then there's going to be a response in our hearts of justification of God and no matter what, God is good. I guess it's as we really capture a sense of the person of the Lord Jesus that that's going to happen. So I'll start partly because I have fun with stories and so we're going to start with the story of feeding the 5,000, probably spend five minutes here on it. So that, I'm not gonna read it, that's verses 32 through 44 in Mark six. So it starts off with I believe the disciples.
So if I get a little off in my story here, understand that I probably have in mind some of the ways it's told in the other gospels too, forgive me. But it starts off with the disciples saying, Master it's getting late you know and the people are hungry and we better send them off so they can go and buy something. And so the Lord Jesus sort of challenges them and says you give them something to eat. And then the response back is if we were to buy 200 denari worth of bread, so that would be a sizable amount. It wouldn't touch it, it wouldn't touch it so that everybody would have something.
It wouldn't be enough. And so I suppose the idea is that Jesus was leading them to the point where they'd say, we can't do it, this is something we can't do. And then the Lord Jesus turns around and he says, well how many loaves do you have? And they say, five loaves and two small fish. And of course we know from the other gospels that there was a little boy that had this food and he apparently was willingly gave up the food to the disciples.
We have five loaves and two small fish and then they say, but what are they among so many? And so then the Lord in the miracle, the Lord has them all sit down and then he blesses the loaves. I'm gonna stop there for a second. He has them all sit down and then he blesses the loaves and perhaps if wanted to try to draw a lesson from this for our own hearts we might say, you know what, here's a little boy that he gives what he has, right? Five loaves and two.
And here's the disciples, that's all they got. They got just what this little boy can provide. And yet the Lord Jesus comes along and he blesses five loaves and two small fish and with his blessing, they meet the meat, they meet the need totally and we we we get a sense, oh, maybe I'm going to get this point. Maybe I'm going to get this lesson that that that with the Lord's blessing what we have is enough to to accomplish God's work here in the sea. Oh it's a good lesson anyway isn't it?
4:57 Jesus told them to sit down in ranks
But I actually have my own thought about it. I think I think that that that the lord was making a miracle here. He was doing a miracle that that that he was going to record for us, for the church, for two thousand years, for mankind to enter into who the Lord Jesus was. He was gonna do a notable miracle, it's gonna involve a multitude of people, Oh, there's about 5,000. Oh yeah, there's 5,000.
Maybe it was three, maybe it was one. However, however, when it's done in this manner and you could easily validate that it was 5,000. So you just start counting. Matter of fact, when I tell this story to some of the kids in the kids clubs, I'll say, let's see, there's 100, 200 and I'll count right up to 5,000. Wow, there's 5,000 here.
And it was about like that actually. It was like the Lord did it in such a way that couldn't be any confusion. It's there, there's 5,000 people here, not just a rough estimate but an actual count. So this is one of the most remarkable miracles, I believe, because it was recorded with tremendous detail. We know how much they had, they had five loaves and two swell fish.
We know how many people there were, 5,000. We we know that that the lord took it and blessed it and then it it spread and we're told that everybody had as much to eat as they wanted to and then when it was done, the Lord said, well gather up the food that remains so that nothing is lost. And perhaps that does mean that nothing would be, that this food would all be used up, could mean that. Or it could mean, or perhaps it means both, but it could mean that you lose anything of the wonder of the miracle. That there were actually 12 baskets full that were left over and it was such a remarkable miracle.
Now in the Gospel of John, they want to come and make him a king but he won't let them. We'll go over that in just a little bit. But the lord Jesus actually in the gospel of John tells them why when they finally find him in Capernaum the next day, he says, you seek me not because you saw the miracle but because you ate the bread. You just want what you can get but you're not entering into who I am I believe is what Jesus is saying. And so this is kind of where I'm going with this message is.
Do we really enter into who the Lord Jesus is? Into the wonder of who this wonderful one is. Okay, so then we know that the Lord Jesus wouldn't let them make him a king and he sent the disciples off in the boat to roll across and then he dismissed the crowds, go home, go home, go home. And then he goes up on the mountain and he prays. And then after it's fully dark and I don't remember whether it says it was midnight but in the evening after it's really dark, the Bible says, or even says here in Mark, it says that he looked and he saw them on the water struggling And some of the other gospels says that there was a wind growing, there was wind blowing that was contrary.
They were working, they couldn't make headway. Now I would like to, sort of contrast this to that miracle where the Lord Jesus was in the stormy sea and the winds were blowing so hard and the waves were coming in. The boat was about to sink and the Lord Jesus stands up and says peace be still. That was definitely a life threatening thing. Here they're they're rowing against this wind and everything and it says they couldn't make headway.
But it doesn't seem to be like they're momently thinking they're going to sink. It's more like the circumstances of life that we all face that we we get to this point in life and says, you know what, life is just plain hard. I can think of the Tylers with their with grandma and so forth and and and the constant needs and drain on the family and we know there's many of these circumstances that are around us. We all face these kind of circumstances. They're draining and sometimes we're tempted to think where's God?
And so here are the disciples, the 12 disciples. They're in the boat, they're rowing and they're not making any headway and and they're just working away. The lord Jesus sees them and he comes walking on the water. I always enjoy my my miracles because because I I try to imagine what it was like. So so do you ever think about trying to walk on the water when the water one's blowing, the waves are tossing?
11:00 Jesus walking on the water, disciples scared
Well, he's God, he can do it. So he walks on the water and of course the disciples see him. They're scared at first. Now we have to understand that this would likely have a deeper meaning all the more since it's in three of the four gospels. So the Lord Jesus was up there on the mountain and they probably wondered where is Jesus.
And he comes walking and they're scared when they see him. So we oftentimes, it's a temptation to any of us I think it happens, where's God? Well the Lord could see him from up there on the mountain, the Lord Jesus could. But God can see us from up there and God doesn't always reveal himself because he's waiting for the right moment to do it. But they're scared when they see him and so when we see the hand of God manifest in our lives sometimes that isn't immediately a comfortable thing.
But the Lord Jesus, they cry out in fear. The Lord Jesus says, don't be afraid, it's me. And of course remember in one of the other gospels it tells about Peter walking on the water and this was that moment. It doesn't tell that in Mark but it's remarkable. So Peter says, Lord if it's you, bid me to come to you.
And so the Lord Jesus said, Come. And so Peter gets out of the boat and he starts walking across the water and believe it or not, young people, Peter, Peter, just a person like you and me was walking on the waters and and I I have no doubt that the lord had a deeper lesson in it for us because because it's sort of a strange one And so Peter starts walking on the water but then it says that suddenly he saw the waves. So while he was looking at the Lord Jesus he was fine but he sees the waves and suddenly he's frightened and as soon as that happens he starts to sink and of course he cries out, Lord save me! And I always enjoyed that because here's the Lord's probably, I gotta figure out how this works. So, so he's probably 10 or 12 feet away, you know, and and and Peter yells, lord, save me and Jesus just couple quick steps and grabs hold of him and and and pulls him over to the boat and shoves him up in the boat and we can just in our mind's eye, we can see this bedraggled Peter that's that's that's sitting in the goat boat.
He's safe. He's saved by the lord but boy, he is soaked and and this is Peter and the lord climbs into the boat after him and and now, at this point in the story, in in the gospel of Mark, it says, it says, the wind ceased. So we're kind of like that peace be still, that other story about the Lord Jesus coming away. But the wind ceased and then if you were to go to the story as it's told in the Gospel of John, it says, and immediately they were at the other side. Immediately.
So they had gone for three or four miles rowing. They're out in the water. I don't know how far out in the water but by very implication they weren't right by the shore. And immediately they're at the shore. So just think of the wonder of this miracle that in a moment's time, they're transferred, both 12 disciples and the Lord Jesus are transferred from, we'll say the middle of, or at least far out into the Sea Of Galilee over to the shore.
And I think now in the Gospel of Mark says that they were greatly amazed beyond measure. They're greatly amazed beyond measure. We're trying to capture the sense of where they were from this story. They were greatly amazed beyond wonder and in one of the other gospels it says that when they got to shore, that they came to Jesus and they bowed down and worshipped him. I think wow, We're you're we we have a sense as we do that.
We have a sense of how they were gripped. They were gripped by the miracle. They that somehow it it had him. They got it. They got it.
That this this one, this man, Jesus, he's the son of God worthy of being worshipped. And they were getting it. They were getting it. Okay, so then we do know that in the Gospel of John that they immediately, or the next day they were at Capernaum. Here it says they went to the land of Gennesaret.
16:37 They went to Capernaum, then Genesaret
So you're just where the curvature the Sea Of Galilee starts down on the western side, that's the Mediterranean side. And so they anchor the boat there and then as they came out of the boat, immediately the people recognized him and ran through the whole surrounding region and began to carry about on beds those who were sick to wherever they heard he was. So wherever he entered, into villages or cities or the country, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and begged him that they might just touch the hem of his garment and as many as touched him were made well. So we'd understand that his fame had gone out, perhaps many of these people had actually been there when he fed the 5,000 a day or two before and they come to him. Now I like the way it expresses here, it says, they begged him that they might just touch the hem of his garment and as many as touched him were made well.
I like the picture. Just the Lord Jesus there and says, we just touch the hem of your garment? In my mind's eye I can see that maybe tentative reach out and touch. But there seems to be the implication there of some appreciation of the person himself, Jesus. So appreciation of him and his power and that which was inherently his and power and that if we could just touch him, if we could just touch him then he would heal us.
Perhaps if we were going to translate this, and I know this story, matter of fact I'm going to read you at least part of a hymn that's written on this story, but if we could perhaps view the touching of his garment as kind of like in Romans, whoever should call upon the name of the Lord, it's that reaching out to him, calling upon him, that point where a person says, Lord help me. And so they touched the hem of his garment and they were healed. Let me read the poem to you. She only touched the hem of his garment. This was actually probably written for that other case of touching the hem of his garment.
She only touched the hem of his garment as to his side she stole amid the crowd that gathered around him and straightway she was whole. Oh, touch the hem of his garment and you too shall be free. His saving power this very hour shall give new life to thee. So now, I'm going to try to do this. If anybody knows that they're welcome to sing with me but I'm gonna make an attempt.
She only touched the hem of his garment as to his side she stole amid the crowd that gathered around him and straightway she was whole. Oh, touch the hem of his garment and thou too shalt be free. His saving power that very hour shall give new life to thee. I'll save you from me saving. Singing the rest of it.
But but I really love that song. Okay. So, thank you. So, So one of my childhood memories is my mother singing that song. And so we in my childhood memories, was the youngest of four little boys and would as we'd go along in the car we would we would sing.
And my mother had a mind that would just hold the words of those hymns. She knew all the words of all the hymns. My dad didn't know the words so well but he had more music to him. But we would sing as we go down and this was one of the songs that we would sing, Oh touch the hem of his garment and you too shall behold. And I like that, the idea that we can take and kind of transfer the idea of his healing into terms of his spiritual healing that he did this and we picture, we understand, because we can picture it, we understand and then God's saying to us, you know, know, you can touch the hem of his garment, you can call upon him and and and so it's, oh touch the hem of his garment and you too shall be saved.
22:24 Enter into the wonder of the Lord Jesus
When they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other things that they have received and hold like the washing of cups, pitchers, copper vessels, and couches. Then the Pharisees and the said and and the scribes asked him, why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders but eat bread with unwashed hands? He answered and said to them, well, did Isaiah the prophet, well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites? As it is written, this people honors me with their lips but their heart is far from me and in vain they worship me, teaching us doctrines the commandments of men.
For laying aside the commandments of god, you hold the tradition of men, the washing of pitchers and cups, and many other such things you do. He said to them, all too well you reject the commandments of God that you may keep your own tradition. For Moses said, honor your father and your mother and he who curses father and mother, let him be put to death. But I say, if a man says to his father and mother, whatever profit you might have received from me is Corbin, that is a gift to god, then you no longer let him do anything for his father and mother, making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down and many others such things you do. Okay, so so try to understand this if we can.
So, so it says they found fault because his disciples were eating with, were eating bread with defiled, that is with unwashed hands. Now this just for your young people, it wasn't just a matter that, that if you looked at their hands, they were all dirty. That's not really the issue at stake here as to whether you should wash your hands before you eat. In our household I think we kind of persuaded our children maybe to wash their hands before you eat. So we're not talking about that What we're talking about is what it says here, unless they wash their hands in a special way.
So they, in these traditions of the Jewish elders, my understanding is they would say you had wash your hands but you had to wash them all the way up to the elbows. Something like that. And it's like, you you have to do it just like this. And if you don't do it just like this, guess what, you're defiled. Okay, so and it doesn't even stop with that.
It says, when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. Now I didn't quite understand completely, so I looked this up, I think it was McDonald's says they take a bath, that is boy, if you go to the marketplace, you're really gonna be defiled and you better go home and take a bath or else you'll really. And so you can see that they really exaggerated things. And then it says in the fourth verse, and there are many other things which they have received and hold. In other words, what it's describing here is only the tip of the iceberg.
This is just an example perhaps of what they would criticize through their traditions. Fifth verse, so the Pharisees come to him and they finally say, why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of elders but eat bread with unwashed hands? So the Lord Jesus then we're moving in now to what is the Lord Jesus going to answer to this criticism? So the very first thing the Lord Jesus does is brand them as hypocrites. Well did Isaiah prophesy to you hypocrites as it is written?
What's a hypocrite? Well, it's someone that puts on a face for something but they're not real. They're not for real. They're hypocrites and that's exactly what Isaiah is talking about here if you read it. So Isaiah says, this is Isaiah 2nine 13, Isaiah says, this people honors me with their lips but their heart is far from me and in vain they worship me teaching us doctrines the commandments of men.
28:16 Words are cheap, heart is far from me
And what is it talking about when it talks about the heart? Of course it's it's talking about our inner man, the real me. So we have this face out here that others can see, the way we present ourselves to others but is our heart right before God? Their heart is far from me. Again, the heart is the inner man and a good verse for understanding is it it occurred in the story where where Samuel went to to Bethlehem.
This is the prophet Samuel went to Bethlehem and he was he was going to he was going to choose the one who would be the king. And so he calls Jesse's sons to come. The first one stands in front of him and his name is Eliab. He was a fine man. He was big and strong and fully matured.
He was the oldest in the house where David was the youngest and Samuel looked at him and in my mind's eye anyway, a smile comes across his face. This is the one, you know. But the Lord says to Samuel, no, this isn't the one. He says, God doesn't view things like man views them. Man looks on the outward things, but God looks in the heart.
Man looks on the outer things, God looks at the heart. And so so this is what the Lord Jesus is talking about. Your heart is far from me. In vain they worship me teaching us doctrines the commandments of men. So whatever had happened in these, in their lives, this hypocrisy had left to, had led to emptiness in their worship.
There was a big show of worship but it was empty, it was vain. In vain they worshiped me and this was their basic problem. They were teaching as doctrines the commandments of men. What does it mean to teach as a doctrine? Would, maybe you could say it like that, they were teaching as though this teaching was the doctrine of God, the commandment of God, but actually it was the commandment of man.
So they were teaching us doctrines, commandments of... The commandment of man. Then the Lord Jesus, he's he's now through with Isaiah, but he goes on saying, for laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men. I want to stress that they're laying aside the commandment of God. They're setting it over here and they're going with the traditions.
They're laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the traditions of men, the washing of pitchers and cups and many other such things. And then the Lord Jesus makes two... Makes one other accusation. He says, all too well you reject the commandment of God that you may keep your traditions. So they're laying aside the commandments of God and they're rejecting the commandments of God.
And so now the Lord Jesus having said this, he's going to give an example that will actually show how they actually did this. So I'm gonna read 10 through 13 again. For Moses said, honor your father and your mother and he who curses father and mother, let him be put to death. But you say, if a man says to his father and mother, whatever profit you might have received from me is Corbin, that is a gift of God. Then you no longer let him do anything for his father and mother, making the word of God of no effect through your tradition.
So I'm going to just read a little sequence here. So for Moses said, and then, but you say, notice the but, but you say, and then finally, then you no longer let him do anything for his father and mother making the word of God of no effect through your tradition. So we can see the process of the logic. Okay, so what did Moses say? Moses says honor your father and mother.
33:11 Basic responsibility to honor father and mother
So get, with that you get a sense of like a directedness of this departure. For instance, they were already thinking in terms of what would we preserve. Okay, maybe it would be something like this. We're gonna set aside so many $100 per month to send to our parents in order that we know that they're living in poverty and we're going to try to help them. Whatever we might have sent to you, then all you gotta do is you have to, you can take this amount that you would have sent to your parents and all you gotta do is to declare that it's Corbin, a gift to God.
I think it's kind of this idea that you would take this amount of money and you would say, I'm going to dedicate this to God. That's good you know. I'm gonna give it to God And then by the traditions of the elders, if you've dedicated to God, there's no way that you can use it for any anything else. And by the way, it was this was what was set aside for my parents to give to my parents. I'm just gonna dedicate that to God.
My parents would want that, wouldn't they? They'd want me to to give that to God and and say I'm doing this good thing, I'm giving it to God and then the parents go hungry. So so basically according to the tradition of the elders, if they if they dedicate it to God then they're not even permitted. So listen how it says. Make...
So then you no longer let him. You no longer... So this means the religious leaders in force, the ones that had the traditions, you no longer let him do anything for his father and mother. Sorry, dad and mom. I I took that money that I was going to give to you, but I this seemed good to me that I would give this to God and I'm going to give it to God and God will be happy with me.
So they basically, you can see that it was extremely hypocritical thing that they were doing. So what is the result? You make the word of God of no effect to your traditions which you have handed down and many such things you do. So I take that last statement and many such things you do, I take that to mean that this again is just the tip of the iceberg that there are many things such as that that they were called on. Well, the Lord Jesus has set them straight, showed that they're totally hypocritical in what they're doing.
So now he turns, the Lord Jesus turns to the multitude. And when he had called all the multitude to himself, he said to them, hear me everyone and understand. There is nothing that enters into a man from the outside which can defile him but the things which come out of him, those are the things that defile him. If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear. So, we have to understand that that that the children of Israel had been given many commandments that were relative to eating And if you were to turn, I believe it's the eleventh chapter of Exodus, defines a number of unclean animals they were not to eat these unclean animals and that was the law.
So I take it from the way the Lord Jesus is saying that he is actually introducing a new thought to them. A new thought, in other words, that a new order of things was going to be, he was going to introduce and they would no longer be under these laws of defilement that were under the Jewish system of things. And so he says, those things can't defile you but there are some things that can defile you and there are things that come out of them, come from within. So that means within this heart of mind, there is that which is dishonoring to god and and evil and and that's where that's where your real defilement comes is from what's from your inner man, from within you. So then in the seventeenth through the twenty third verse, the Lord Jesus goes into the house and he's with the disciples themselves.
38:55 Disciples asked him concerning the issue
So so then in the twentieth verse, he said, what comes out of a man, that defiles the man. What comes out of a man? And I will say that he reiterates this statement four times here. Well, the first one is actually given up in the fifteenth verse, the middle of fifteenth verse, but the things which come out of him, those are the things that defile him. The twentieth verse, what comes out of a man that defiles a man.
Twenty first verse, for within, out of the heart of men proceed evil. I'll stop there and we'll go back to that. And then finally in the twenty third verse, all these evil things come from within and defile a man. So so the lord Jesus is forcing them to look into their hearts and and to and to deal with the with the sin that was in their hearts. The twentieth verse, for what comes out of a man that defiles a man for from within, out of the heart of men proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornication, murderers, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness.
All these evil things come from within and defile a man. So what are we talking about when we're talking about the heart? I see my time is up but what I'd like to do is just go through just a few quick verses on the heart and hopefully in about four minutes I can wrap up here. Okay, so from within, out of the heart of man proceeds evil. From within, out of the heart of man proceeds evil.
So just what is the heart? The heart is a reference to the inner man, the real me underneath my face. And the real me that's underneath. The heart is described as being the seat of the affections and the passions of man. It's also even talked to be about a heart of wisdom like Solomon was said to have been given a heart of wisdom.
It's my basic moral inner man that's at issue. The heart can be evil or pure. It can be hateful or loving. It can be foolish or wise. And one of the really good verses to understand the heart is, a good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good, an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil, for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.
The mouth gives expression to what's in the heart. The natural heart of man, that we inherited from Adam, the natural heart of man is deceitful. Now I'm out of time so I'm just gonna read these verses, I've got them typed here. The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked. Who can know it?
And then that's Jeremiah seventeen:nine, Jeremiah seventeen ten says, I the Lord test the heart. So the Lord is in there probing as to what's really in our hearts. Here's another good verse. This is this is Acts twenty eight twenty seven. For the heart of this people has grown dull, their hearts, their ears are hard of hearing.
Their eyes they've closed lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears. Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn so that I could should heal them. That's the natural heart of man. That's why it really takes the work of the spirit of God in our hearts to save us, is because that's the way we are. Okay, the next principle is this, the regenerated heart is pure.
So once we're born again, God gives us pure heart. Okay, so here's a verse. Pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. You can have a pure heart. It's a heart that's got his eyes set on the lord, I'm sure.
Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure body. That's Hebrews ten twenty two. And then David's plea, he said, he says to his prayer, create in me a clean heart, oh lord, create in me a clean heart, oh lord, and renew a steadfast spirit in me. That's Psalm 5one 10. Okay, next principle is this.
Every person is a steward of his own heart responsible for the evil thoughts and purposes that he allows to remain unjudged in his heart. I've worked at that a while trying to express it the way I thought was really the correct way. Because we are stewards in our heart but we do find that we do have a natural heart in there too and that natural heart wants its own thing, it's very selfish and when things well up in the natural heart, they need to be judged. Okay. So so here's some verses for it.
Keep your heart with all diligence for out of it spring the issues of life. Keep your heart, young people this is this is important verse. Keep your heart with all diligence for out of it spring the issues of life. I would say, you can do things in your life, you can do things in your life that will aid you in being able to follow the Lord Jesus in a holy way. You can have your daily quiet times, You can tell others about the Lord Jesus.
You don't have to be, do it in some great grand way, just a quiet little word about the Lord. You can do these things and they will help you. Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief departing from the living god. That's that's Hebrews three twelve. Repent therefore of your wickedness and pray god that perhaps the thought of your heart might be forgiven.
