Outline and transcript

0:00 Opening prayer and introduction

Let's pray. Father god, we thank you for our lord Jesus Christ. We thank you that the lord Jesus died on the cross for our sins and that we can come to him freely, and he will forgive us freely. We thank you father that though you are a holy, holy, holy god that you've offered salvation to to us that we might stand in your very presence, cleansed from our sins. We praise your name for this father.

We pray that you'd bless this message and pray that your name would be glorified in Jesus name. Amen. I want to start the message today. My my message, my theme is standing in the presence of holy god. And may we do so.

There's many cases in in the scriptures where people stood in the presence of god, holy god, and and we're going to study perhaps their reactions. What what was it like to stand in the presence of holy God? And and what is... What what problems solutions are involved. Okay.

So let's turn to Isaiah chapter six. We're going to join Isaiah and and experience. This is a vision that Isaiah saw. Isaiah chapter six verse one. In the year that king Uzziah died, I saw the lord sitting on a throne high and lifted up, and the train of his robe filled the temple.

Above it stood Seraphim. Each one had six wings with two, he covered his face. With two, he covered his feet, and with two, he flew. And one cried to another and said, holy, holy, holy is the lord of hosts. The whole earth is full of his glory.

And the post of the door of the temple were shaken by the voice of him who cried out, and the house was filled with smoke. So I said, woe is me, for I am undone because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips. For my eyes have seen the king, the lord of hosts. Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a live coal, which he had taken with the tongs from the altar. And he touched my mouth with it and said, behold, this has touched your lips, your iniquity is taken away, and your sin is purged.

This is this is one of two places in scripture where it speaks about the thrice the thrice holy god, holy, holy, holy god. Holy, holy, holy is the lord of host. So, so, the lord gave, the lord gave Isaiah this vision and and the vision is a little bit like a dream, something like that. It is something that you can clearly see but but perhaps not physically a reality. But in this vision, he sees the lord.

Now, the lord, the lord was there in the temple. He was holy. Probably on the spiritual side of things, it was it was a perfect perception on the part of Isaiah. If he had been in the temple, I don't think he would have seen the with his physical eyes. But but as he go...

As in this vision, he he's in the temple. It says that the whole house was full of smoke, and and and when the the serpent spoke, says the post of the door of the temple were shaken by the voice. And and this is what the voice says. It says, holy, holy, holy is the lord of hosts. The whole earth is full of his glory.

We're talking about being in the presence of holy god. What was the effect upon Isaiah? So first of all, Isaiah says, woe is me for I am undone. He was in the presence of the holiness of god. You have to kind of ask, what was it?

Was it that caused a sort of a fear or a or and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips. And that is the problem when man stands in front of holy god is is that he must face his sin. He must face the fact that he's a sinner. And and so so Isaiah expresses his woe, and he says, mine eyes have seen the king, the lord of hosts. But there was a solution to this.

5:21 The Seraphim provides a solution

So in order to stand with confidence in the presence of holy god, there had to be this this matter of sin taken up and dealt with. And so so it it... The the dealing with that had to do with the altar. Now, the altar is always the thought of a sacrifice where... And so so implied by this seraphim going to the altar is that there was a sacrifice that had been offered that would that would be an atonement for the sin of of Isaiah.

So so he says, your iniquity is taken away and your sin purged. We're not gonna go on further in the story here, but but it it was a preparation for for Isaiah. And it wasn't until this happened that Isaiah could answer the lord and say, here am I. Send me. He he it was a preparation.

I was kind of interested as we are singing the hymns that we had some really exalting hymns about god and and then we ended up we ended up... Let let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable to you, oh god. And I thought, that really fits here, the Isaiah's mission that that once once the sins were dealt with, then then the the meditation and the words could be acceptable to god. Okay. So that's the first example.

The second example is is really a dramatic one also. It's in Exodus chapter 19. And this is when this is the the Mount Sinai account. And and I'm going to start out in Exodus 19 verse nine. Gonna read this verse because I I think this is kind of the setup for what's gonna happen.

Okay? Exodus chapter nine. And the lord said to Moses, behold, I come to you in a thick cloud that the people may hear when I speak with you and believe you forever. So God was about to do something, and and it was going to have eternal effects. It was gonna last forever.

And and and so so god says, behold, I come to you in a thick cloud that the people may hear what I... When I speak to you and believe you forever. God was about to get his holy law. And and what god was about to do was something that would change the very history of mankind. God giving his holy standard, moral standard to mankind.

And and and so as as God says this, I'm gonna do it in a way. I'm I'm gonna do this in a way that that people are gonna believe you, and they're gonna keep on believing you. This this is gonna be a lasting effect. And so so that's the intro to the story of Mount Sinai. So so then the lord told tells Moses, now, this is gonna happen.

It's gonna be on the third day. This is tenth and eleventh verses. It's gonna be on the third day. I want you to tell the people to get ready, consecrate themselves. Get get ready.

You know, I suppose the idea is kind of self judgment. Get ready for this moment when when when you're gonna stand before me. And then the next thing in the twelfth verse, he tells them, set a boundary. No no one must touch this mount. This is a holy place.

And and and listen to how serious this is. He says, whoever touches the mountain shall surely be put to death. He shall surely be stoned or shot through with an arrow. It's it's it's like, woah. Wait a minute.

Wait a minute. This is serious stuff, isn't it? And so then God said, he's told him now it's gonna be on the third day. And he says, now when you hear, this is the end of the thirteenth verse, when you hear the trumpet sounding long, then come near to the mountain. Mind you, they were not to touch the mountain.

Remember that now. Not touching the mountain, but come near to the mountain. So in the sixteenth verse, they come to the third day. Okay? And and so this is the description that's given of the mountain.

It says it says, there were thunderings and lightnings and a thick cloud in the mountain, and the the sound of the trumpet was very loud, so that the people who were in the camp trembled. It was a scary it was a scary situation. And and so so now what were they to do when the trumpet sounded long? They were to come close to the... So so the seventeenth verse, Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet with god, and they stood at the foot of the mountain.

No. No. They're not touching the mountain. They're outside of this border, this this limit that been set next to the mountain. They must not touch the mountain.

18 verses is the description of the mountain now. Now Mount Sinai was completely in smoke because the lord descended upon it in fire, and the smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked greatly. This was an awesome moment. This was a... This is why god said, the people are gonna see this, and they're gonna believe you forever.

And and so then then we're told that that in the nineteenth verse, the blast of the trumpet sounded louder and louder. I I I tried to imagine what this was like. It it was like... They must have just like gone into sensory overload. You know, it's like the the light and the thunder is going on.

The earth's quaking and and they're standing close to the mountain and and and now the trumpet sounds. And that's the trumpet of god sounding the trumpet sounds and it gets louder and louder and it says, finally, Moses spoke and god answered him by voice. And the lord came down upon Mount Sinai on the top of the mountain and the lord called Moses to to the top of the mountain and Moses went up. So, so we have this this big mount here and and and Moses goes up on the mountain And he he communes with god up there on the mountain. Now, he gets up there and god then we don't we're not told how long he was there.

In my imagination, it was an hour. We don't know a lot of them but but he goes up on the mountain for a little bit and then god says, now, go go back down and warn the people as they come onto the mountain. It's like god said, you don't understand the fact that it's God did not touch the mountain. And and we're talking now about the the difference between god and man. Holy holy holy god.

They weren't to touch the mountain. And and so so Moses said, well, I've warned them already and it's almost like god chases him down out of the mountain. He's... It... The twenty third...

Twenty fourth verse. Away. Get down. And and then you can come back up with Aaron with you. Okay.

So so Moses goes down out of the mountain, and he warns the people again. Don't touch the mountain. And then comes kind of like the climax of this this experience that they're going to see, and they'll never ever be able to forget this experience. God speaks with a god voice from the mountain, and he gives his holy law to them. We're talking about the old covenant, aren't we?

14:23 God speaks the Ten Commandments

You shall not bow to them or serve them for I, the lord your god, am a jealous god, and visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations for those who hate me, but showing mercy to thousands to those who love me and keep my commandments. You shall not take the name of the lord your god in vain. For the lord will not hold them guiltless who takes his name in vain. Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. Six days, you shall labor and do all your work.

But on the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it, you shall do no work. You, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor the stranger who is within your gates. For in six days, the lord made the heaven and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them and rested in the seventh day. Therefore, the lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.

Honor your father and your mother that your days may be long upon the land which the lord your god is giving you. You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear fault with false witness against your neighbor.

You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You should not cover your neighbor's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbors. There it is. God's sober solemn warning. God's standard.

It's like I say, this this would... This was given with this spirit. Okay? Behold, I'm coming to you in a thick cloud that the people may hear when I speak with you and believe you forever. Sobering, isn't it?

Sobering. Now, I will... I'm I'm I'm going to just remind you that in the seventeenth verse of our previous chapter, it says, Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet with God and they stood at the foot of the mountain. Okay. Now, the eighteenth verse of a mixed chapter says, now all the people witnessed the thundering and the lightning flashes, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking, and the people saw it, and they trembled, and they stood afar off.

They were in the presence of holy, holy, holy God. Now they say to Moses, nineteenth verse, you speak with us, and we will hear, let not God speak with us lest we die. Actually, I think this is interesting because this... You can tell by looking at this verse that it was a god voice that spoke to them. You know, it...

It's... I... You know, I've been a little dramatic here, but I I'm sure the drama that I've given you doesn't even begin to touch what what really happened here. This this was this was intended that they should never never ever ever forget. This was this was god's message to them.

Okay. So so Moses so Moses says to the people, so they're they're scared to death. Okay. Moses says to the people, do not fear. This is the twentieth verse.

Do not fear for god has come to test you that his fear may be before you so that you may not sin. I I think it's kind of interesting. It it's listen to it. Do not fear for god is doing this so that you will fear. Do not fear.

So, what what would you lay on that? How how would you understand that? So, I I I think the thought is that there are two different kinds of fear. One kind of fear is not healthy fear. That's that's the kind of fear they had.

There's one kind of fear that wasn't a healthy fear. There's another kind of fear that is exactly what god does want us to have. So so god doesn't want us to have that terrified fear. He doesn't want that. But he does want us to have a a reverential fear of himself.

So we're... We stand in awe of of our god. And so you could maybe paraphrase it like this. Do not be terrified. Do not be terrified.

For god has come to test you so that his reverential fear may be before you so that you may not sin. There was a way that they should take this. I don't know that that's the way they did take it, but there's a way they should take this. They were standing in the presence of holy, holy god. There was a problem.

20:01 Moses draws near to God

Okay. So twenty first verse. So the people stood afar off, but Moses drew near to the thick darkness where God was. So Moses goes into the presence of God, and the people are standing back. They're scared.

Right? They're standing back. Okay. And then we have the continuation of this chapter. We have the next chapter, and the next chapter, and the next chapter, three chapters.

Okay? And and this is god talking to Moses. He's giving him some further commandments. Okay? And then we get to the twenty fourth chapter.

And now, I think I mentioned that this was the old covenant. This... I think I mentioned that this was the old covenant. And and the old covenant hasn't actually been dedicated yet. And so we're gonna go to the twenty fourth chapter, and we can see the sequence of events.

So Moses goes and talk and God gave some gives some some additional information. And then then in the twenty fourth verse, Well, at the at the end here, we have Moses goes back down and god says, come up come up to the lord, you and Aaron, Nadab, and 70 of the elders and worship from afar. Okay. Now, remember these elders are among those that are standing back there scared and but but this is going to be a little different. Now, this is the point where he's actually gonna dedicate this this covenant.

He's actually gonna dedicate it. We wanna kind of feel in what what what was involved in that dedication and and what can we draw as a lesson from it. Okay. So so in the fourth verse, it says, Moses wrote all the words of the lord. So I suppose it was the 10 commandments that we read plus, I'm assuming it included those three chapters that that we skipped over.

And he writes them down, and this is the old covenant. This is the old covenant. And so so then we're told that Moses rose up early in in the morning. He built an altar at the foot of the mountain. 12 pillars for the 12 tribes of Israel.

He sent the young men to the children of Israel who offered burnt offerings and sacrificed peace offerings of auction to the lord. We're not told exactly how many were offered but but we are told that they save the blood in basins And this blood is going to be kind of part of of what of this dedication. By the way, we're gonna take a minute after this, and we're going to just look in in in Hebrews chapter nine because it deals with this in Hebrews chapter nine. It deals with it. And and I I think we'll get some more light on this by doing that.

It says it says that that Moses, six verse, Moses took half the blood, put it in basins, and half the blood he sprinkled on the altar. So the altar's there, the the sacrifice were made. Let's see. They're called peace offerings and burnt offerings and and and so they take half the blood and they sprinkle on the altar And then he takes other invasions and he and he goes to the people. Seventh verse, he took the book of the covenant and he read in the hearing of the people.

So he reads it again to them. Okay? He read in the in the hearing of the people, and he said, and the people said all that the lord has said we will do and be obedient, which we we know from the history of the children of Israel that they didn't... They weren't they weren't very obedient. But they make this promise.

This is the covenant with god. It says in the eighth verse, Moses took the blood, and he sprinkled the blood on the people. We might say that's a little gross, but that's what happened. Okay? He took the blood and he sprinkled it on the people and and he said, this is the blood of the covenant which the lord has made with you according to your words and and then Moses went up also with Aaron and Nadab and Abihu and the 70 elders of Israel.

And they saw the God of Israel. And there was under his feet as it were a paved work with sapphire stone. And it was like the very heavens in its clarity. But on the nobles of the children of Israel, he did not lay his hands. So they saw god and they ate and drank.

Okay. So what's the difference between the children of Israel as as god in his proclamation on the mouth, 10 commandments, and they're back there and they're scared to death. And 70 elders of the children of Israel over here taken back up to, I assume, the border of the mountain, looking upward, and god gives them a vision of himself since they saw god. Now, in in one sense, I don't think anybody could see god. I mean, it says that elsewhere in scripture.

So, this was a a likeness of god that was shown up there but it was it was beautiful. It was perfect. It's like a gemstone. And what was the difference? Why why it's...

It says they ate and drank. They weren't afraid. What what made the difference here between these two? Let me say that I I would say what made the difference is the blood was sprinkled. Now now we may say, well, come now.

We're not gonna sprinkle blood on you. Are we? No. And we're not, by the way. But but but let me let me say though in all seriousness though that that for us, the blood is the blood of Jesus Christ.

26:53 How we are made fitting for God's presence

I'm just gonna take a little bit of time on this. Hebrews chapter nine. I don't know how much time I'm really gonna spend on this, but I want I want to point out some verses to you. Okay. Nineteenth verse.

Nine nineteen, Hebrews. Now this is... We're we're recounting. Moses... The author here is recounting what happened back there.

So he says, and when Moses had spoken every precept to the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and goats with water, scarlet wool, and hyssop, and he sprinkled both the book itself and all the people saying, this is the blood of the covenant which god has commanded you. He's talking about that scene that we just read. Likewise, he sprinkled with blood, the tabernacle, and all the vessels of ministry. That was at a little bit later time that he did that. And according to the law, almost all things are purified with blood and, and this is the important phrase, I think, without the shedding of blood, there is no emission.

So if we're trying to draw a lesson from this story, they needed the blood that was that was necessary. The the the animals had to die. The sacrifice had to die. The blood had to be applied. Now how does how how how do we see ourselves?

We're we're not we're not there. We can only by phase look back at that event. Hopefully, we do. It's a fearful time. But we but we face the same dilemma that we stand before holy holy god and and I surely that's much of the lesson of that that god is a holy, holy, holy god and descended his presence that with with our sins on us is is not very nice, not not a place you wanna be And so and so Moses makes the offering and he sprinkles the blood and and because of that, they're able to stand before god.

Now, god tells us this very clearly. The blood of Jesus Christ, his son, cleanses us from all sin. Blood of Jesus Christ, his son, cleanses us from all sin. How are we to escape escape the condemnation of standing in front of holy god with our sins. Well, we need the sins removed.

We need we need forgiveness of sins. He said, without the shedding of blood, there's no remission. So god has made it as a principle that the sacrifice has to die for us. It was a principle that was right through the Old Testament. You'll find it again and again and again.

What about us? We don't think seeing blood sprinkled around. Oh, but the blood was sprinkled. It was sprinkled in the presence of god when the lord Jesus died for our sins and his blood was shed so that we could be saved from our sins and now through faith, we can be saved. Okay.

So, we're talking about standing in the presence of holy god and there is there is a certain condemnation. But let's talk about god. Let's just talk about god for just a little bit. So so Moses had told them, don't be terrified. Don't be terrified.

For God has come to test you and so that you you will have that that reverential fear of him so that you won't sin. Okay, let's talk about the fear of god. The reverential fear of god causes men to stand in awe of god and to fear to displease him. My verse is let all the earth fear the lord. Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.

I I think that perhaps we could kind of draw this. If if our subject is standing in the presence of holy god, if that's our subject, then are we standing in the presence of holy god? And whether we perceive it or not, we are. We're standing in the presence of holy god. And so he says, let all let all let all the earth fear the lord, let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.

We all stand in responsibility before this holy god. We need to have those sins removed, don't we? So that we'll have confidence. Let me go one more slide here. The the fear of the lord.

Fear of the lord introduces men into a pathway of wisdom as they seek to know god better and to understand his holiness. A verse is Proverbs nine ten. The fear of the lord is the beginning of wisdom and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. Again, we stand in the presence of holy god whether we exactly perceive it or not. How well we perceive it is probably how well we're gonna enter into the fear of the lord.

32:57 The glorious character of God

Let not the rich man glory in his riches, but let him who glories glory in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the lord, exercising loving kindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these, delight in him. Nothing that we have in this world can compare with god. One wonders of who god is. And so so what I'd like to do is just ask this question.

Well, what is what is god really like? What? And and the answer is, well, god is so far to be honest in a way. But the interesting thing is that in in his word, in the Bible, god has revealed very much about himself. An an amazing amount.

So we're gonna we're gonna look at a a list of some of the attributes of god that are actually listed. The glorious character of god, I like to call it. There's one god. He's he's he's he's he's... The father, son, and holy spirit, but there's one god.

He's eternally self existent. He always was and he always will be. It's amazing, isn't it? He's infinite, glorious, and self sufficient. He's all powerful, and and he possesses absolute authority.

It's interesting, isn't it? That's our god. He's all wise. He's all all omniscient, all knowing, including knowledge of the future. He's an omnipresent god.

One one of one of the prophets that says, where can you go from the presence of the lord? You can't. He's an omnipresent god. He's holy, righteous, and just. What a wonderful god we have.

He's unchanging and dependable. He's a god of light and revelation, and we have this revelation here in the scripture. He's a loving god. I like that one. He's a sovereign god.

He does according to his own will and wisdom. Now, I had one time done quite a quite a thorough study of these ones. Looked up these verses here. Spent time over it. Just got mauled over it.

I got to this point where I where I said, you know, I I've got an uncomfortable feeling in my soul. Because I have this sense that I sort of think I've got god figured out now. God, I've got god figured out. And I... But this this isn't right.

This is not right. And and I and I I try to guess get before god and dealt with this. So so this is this is my conclusion. So let god be god. Let god be god.

His infinite attributes far exceed our far our finite comprehension. So so we talk about god being eternal and self existent. But how do we understand eternal? I mean, we can understand a concept of something we'd go on and on and on, but you can't measure it. Wouldn't be eternal would be good.

It it it's it's really... It surpasses all of our imagination. And just to think that god not only will be here forever, but he always was. Woah. I don't...

We don't know of anything material in this world that didn't have a beginning. But not god. He's self existent. Do we understand that? I don't think so.

He's infinite. He's all powerful, all wise, all knowing, all present. He's unchanging. Do we understand infinite? I don't think so.

I I remember in in one of my math classes that that the teacher says, well, the definition of of infinite is that any point that you can pick is bigger than that. That's not much of a definition, but I thought it was a good thought. You you pick any number any number you can pick is bigger than that. It's infinite. Okay.

I I thought that was kind of cute. That's the way it is with God. No matter what we think, he's he's a little more than that. Okay? He's all powerful, all wise, all knowing, all present.

38:03 God is perfectly righteous, holy, and just

The moral area. We're talking about morality. He's always right. And and and and I I think you could say this about the righteousness of god that it's it it it's the most set of all his attributes. He doesn't...

He never yields his righteousness. To yield his righteousness would be to yield his deity itself. God is perfect. He's perfectly righteous. Do we really understand that?

I don't think so. I don't think we really understand that. Holy holy is the absence of evil. Completely sanctified, set apart from all evil, holy justice. Just...

To be just is to always act in in... Always act in a righteous and a holy way. It's... It has to do with our... The way we act, what we do.

God is just. Everything he does is done in righteousness and holiness. Do we understand the righteousness of god? I don't think so. I think it's beyond us.

The last one, god is love. It characterizes him and it glorifies him. I I I just wanna say that we may not understand the others, but the... Maybe a greater extent we might understand love. God has made us with hearts that can understand understand love.

Love. And so so how how great was this love? We think we speak of it as infinite love. We speak of it as infinite love. So so how great is it?

Well, we already know how great it is because we... He was so great that he would actually give his own son. In in Ephesians, I believe, it speaks about... It says that to know the love of god that press passes knowledge, that we're... It's given to us to know the love of god.

And it's that which draws us to him to realize that he has provided a sacrifice for our sins. I I have two other quick slides I'm gonna bounce through and and and we'll we'll make some attempt to to to close this up. Okay. So the problem is sin. Why why are we why are we just playing scared in the presence of god?

The problem is sin, and each one of us have sinned. The Bible says all have sinned and fall short of the glory of god. In Isaiah 59, it says, your iniquities have separated between you and your god. Your iniquities, your your guilty sins have separated between you and your god. That's what this is trying to illustrate here.

That there's something that keeps us away from god, and it's our sins. It's that which makes us uncomfortable in the presence of holy god. The seriousness of that division there, that gulf in between god and man is that the wages of sin is death. There's consequences that that go on eternally. We're also told concerning god or concerning heaven, it said, there shall by no means enter into it, into heaven.

Anything that defiles or causes an abomination or a lie. Folks, that's the problem. So what's the solution? The solution is Christ. Solution is Christ.

I like the way this graphically shows that the cross of Christ and provides a bridge across that chasm so that we, people, can have those sins removed and be able to be in the presence of god. Here's a few verses. The gift of god is eternal life through Jesus Christ our lord. God provides a way, doesn't he? Concerning what Christ did, it says, Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust.

They might bring us to god. Jesus himself said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man comes to the father but by me. We're told about the shed blood of the lord Jesus that it's our redemption. We have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins.

43:13 Confess with your mouth and believe

It was confessing. It... That's why I got confused with them. If you confess with your mouth the lord Jesus and believe in your heart that god raised them from the dead, you should be saved. Always enjoyed that it adds that believing in the heart.

Let's understand that god knows our heart, and he knows whether we really are trusting in him. Let's trust in the lord Jesus. He provides the salvation for our sins. Let's pray. Father god, we thank you that though you are a holy, holy, holy god and and that no sin will make it in heaven that you have provided a solution for sin and is found in the lord Jesus who died for our sins.
