0:00 The Bible: God's Living and Powerful Word

Well, Don, I gave Don a little hint that, my message today is actually going to be a devo. It'll be a little bit more of a devo and there will be application. It's going to be about our bible. I'm going give you a little bit of history, maybe you'd all noticed, but in about the middle fourteen hundreds, a German inventor by the name of Johannes Gutenberg was given the credit for building the first working printing press. Did you know that?

And, I'll give you three guesses what the first book he printed. The first two don't count. Yes. This is the first book that came off his press. And, I don't know if he named it himself or someone else named it, but it's called the Gutenberg Bible.

And, you may not know this, but the library in Washington DC is the biggest library in the world. It's the biggest library in the world and they actually have three original copies of the Gutenberg Bible in the DC library. I don't know if you knew that or not. I'm going to borrow a phrase from, King Solomon. He said, of making many books, there is no end.

And ever since Mr. Gutenberg, invented the first printing press, only the Lord knows how many novels, how many textbooks, how many paperback books, how many magazines, how many newspapers and all printed material has come off of a printing press. Only the Lord knows. And of course, nation under heaven, there's approximately 200 nation and it's safe to assume, they all got their printing presses and they continue to pump out the material of the printed page. But I do want to remind you about the bible.

The Lord Jesus said something like this, heaven and earth shall pass away but my my words shall never pass away. So this is the book that is gonna stand forever. This is the book that excels all books. Do agree with that? This is the book that excels everything that came off the press since Gutenberg printed the first bible.

I hope you agree with that. And, I'm excited about the bible. I came to realize late in my life, I wish I knew this when I was in my teens when I first trusted Christ, I'll tell you about that in a few minutes, I have come to realize that this is the greatest possession I have. It is the greatest possession I have when we talk about tangible things now. This is the greatest possession I have.

There's no book like this. The unknown author of Hebrews said it is living and it is powerful. It's alive. We get excited about text mail. This is God's text mail.

It's alive. It's very much alive. And God loves to talk to us, through his word, are you and I listening? But he loves to talk to us. It's alive and powerful.

3:19 Psalm 119: A Response of Awe

I got some very simple thoughts about these verses. And so Psalm one nineteen verses one sixty one through one sixty three. Now we don't know who authored Psalm one nineteen. I I wanna make a declaration. Psalm one nineteen is probably one of my most favorite chapters in the entire bible and you might ask the question, why?

Why is Psalm one nineteen one of my most favorite chapters in the bible besides the Christ centered passages and scriptures? Well, it's very simple. The subject is the word of God. It's very simple. Now the author uses eight different terms in reference to ultimately the written word of God, the law, judgments, statutes, testimonies, commandments, and so forth.

But ultimately, all those statements refer to the written word of God. And, out of the 176 verses, at least a 174 are related to the written word of God. So I love this chapter, and I'm very excited, and I love these three verses. And Lord, help me to, share my thoughts with you. I'm reading from the King James, and, so Psalm 119 verse one sixty one through one sixty three.

We don't know who authored the chapter. Princes have persecuted me without a cause, but I love this contrasting conjunction in spite of his affliction, but my heart stands in all of thy word. My heart stands in all thy word. I rejoice at thy word as one that finds great spoil, some translations will say treasure. I hate and abhor lying, but thy law do I love.

Okay? So in spite of the Psalmist's affliction, and I know something about you folks in the audience right there and something, you know, that I know quite well. Affliction is an interesting word for a Christian. Affliction for a Christian can be in three different ways. It can be physically.

There are some of you in the audience right now that are in physical pain. It can be emotional. Can Christians suffer from depression? Yes. And it can also be spiritual.

It's called spiritual warfare. Satan shoots his fiery darts at us. So believers can suffer affliction in three ways, and right now some of you are experiencing affliction. So in spite of his affliction, the psalmist had four responses to the written word of God that we likewise need to daily pursue, possess, and practice what are these four responses. Well, in Psalm one sixty one verse b, he responds with an attitude of all about God's word.

7:05 Responding with an Attitude of Awe

It's interesting, Don, you said in your opening there, what is our response to the word of God? Well, that's my keyword, what is our response. Okay? So starting off with, he responds with an attitude of all to the written word of God. When I took the Ezekiel project in 1997, in 1997, 1998, Chris Schroeder was a teacher.

And Chris told me something I have never forgotten. You know that attitude is the most important ingredient in life? Do you believe that? Attitude is the most important ingredient in a Christian's life. What is your attitude about this or that?

Now I realize we're all different, but what is our attitude in good times and bad times? What is our attitude? So attitude is one of the most important ingredients in life. And so in spite of his infliction, he had this attitude of all for the for the following reasons. I'm gonna give you three reasons why you and I likewise need to respond with an attitude of all for God's word.

9:00 The Unique Author of the Bible

How do we know that? Second Peter chapter one verse 21, which reminds us, I'll just I'll just read it to you. You guys just went through first and second Peter, and it says, knowing this first that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation, for the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man, but holy men of god spake, and notice the next sentence, as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. Yes, the bible has 40 different authors, but they were all what? Inspired or led or moved by the Holy Spirit to write what he would have them to write.

So the holy spirit is, the supernatural or, yes, the supernatural author of the word of god. So that makes the word of god unique to everything compared to what we might read. Second reason is the bible alone has a supernatural cure for man's sin. The bible alone has a supernatural cure for man's sin. Religion doesn't have a cure for sin.

10:42 The Cure for Sin: The Gospel

I was brought up in a non Christian home. I didn't have a clue who Jesus was. All I knew him as a swear word, I did not have a clue who he was or what he ever did for me. So on that day, back in July 1960, my uncle confronted me with the gospel and, I found out about the fact of sin. For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.

And I go, that's something to think about. It didn't say for all have sinned except Greg. It said for all have sinned and done what? Come short of glory of God. I said, well that's something to think about.

Well, you know when we break God's law there's what a consequence. What are the consequences of sin whether I do one or I do 10,000,000? God hates sin. It's our sin that separates us from him. For the wages of sin is death or a simple definition of death is separation from God.

When we talk about death, it simply means separation. For the wages of sin is death or eternal separation from God in a place called hell which would eventually be the Lake Of Fire. And I go, well, that's something more to think about. And the verse that really bothered me was Jeremiah seventeen nine. I was never exposed to the bible before.

Anybody know Jeremiah seventeen nine? The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked. Who can know it? I, the lord. Search the heart.

Our hearts are open books. I search the heart. I test the mind to give every man according to his deeds. And so I was confronted with the gospel and I came under conviction that I was in trouble with God. I came under conviction that I had a problem, my sin separated me from God.

And then my uncle told me the sweetest news I ever heard in my life, which I never heard before, How did Christ died for my sins according to the scriptures, that he was buried, that he arose again the third day according to the scripture. I never heard that before. Jesus died for me. It's called substitution. He died for me.

I never heard that before. And my uncle asked me the big question. He asked me the $64,000 question which used to be a quiz show. He said, would you like to be saved? I said, oh yes, what do I need to do?

Which sounds like the Philippian jailer. What do I need to do? So, fifty eight years ago I understood three things. Understood I was a sinner. I took side with God against myself that, yes Lord, I've sinned against you.

I'm guilty as charged. I understood I couldn't save myself, and I understood that Lord Jesus was the only one who could save me. And so to coin a phrase, by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, fifty eight years ago I asked the Lord Jesus, I put my trust in Lord Jesus as my personal savior. Greatest thing ever happened to me. And so I'm so thankful that this book has a supernatural cure for man's sin.

It's the gospel. It's called the gospel. It's the greatest message bar none that you could ever hear or read. And I hope everybody in this room can say, yes, I have done that too. I hope you can say that.

Because someday we're gonna meet God in one of two ways, you can meet him as your judge or you can meet him as your savior and you can make a choice. And, I hope for your sake, like me, you'll meet him as your savior. It's a serious thing. And the bible alone is a supernatural source for our spiritual health. First Peter two two, but desire the word that, what, you may grow thereby.

15:23 Desiring the Word of God

More about Jesus would I know? Do we have that desire? This is the only source of our spiritual health and growth. There's no other way. Are you and I investing time in this book?

This is the source. It is alive. It is powerful. And God loves to speak to us through his word. Are we listening?

Do we desire the word? There's a song by a pastor called Mark Altrage. I'm gonna recite his words to you. I will not sing a solo. I would love to but I don't want to embarrass myself.

And the words are like this, talking about our God, it says, you are beautiful beyond description, too marvelous for words, too wonderful for comprehension like nothing ever seen or heard. Who can grasp your infinite wisdom? Who can fathom the depths of your love? You are beautiful beyond description, majesty enthroned above. And I love this next phrase, And I stand, I stand in all of you.

I stand, I stand in all of you. Holy God to whom all praises do, I stand in all of you. Well, I have come to understand and realize late in life, I personally believe and convince that the more you and I stand in all of God's written word, the more you and I will stand in the living word, our savior. Do you agree with that? The more you and I have this attitude about this book that we stand in all this book, we will stand in awe of the living word.

Do you and I have that response right now? Or is this just another book, a boring book? Someone said if it's a boring book we need to brush up on truth decay. If we know truth decay or something like that, I forgot. Anyway, you know.

18:11 Rejoicing in Our Salvation

I'm just gonna give three reasons. We need to rejoice in our salvation. Would you turn to second Corinthians, for one minute? Second Corinthians chapter one and verses nine and ten. Now even though the word rejoicing is not in these verses, I'm coming to that, and, I'll have another verse here in a minute.

Second Corinthians chapter one in verses nine and ten. Talking about our past, Paul writes in second Corinthians chapter one verse nine and ten, But we, but I had the sentence of death in ourselves and myself that we should not trust in ourselves but in God which raises the dead. Notice the three tenses of verse 10. There are three different tenses in verse 10, past, present, and future with the idea of deliverance which can be same same salvation. Who delivered us from so great a death, past tense, if you trusted Christ as your personal savior, he delivered you from so great a death.

Then it goes to the present tense and does deliver, that's in the present tense, in whom we will trust that he will yet deliver us, future tense. In that verse, you got you got salvation, you got sanctification, you got glorification. There's three tenses there. God's in the business of delivering, isn't he? What he has done for you and I, do you think that's a good reason to rejoice?

Didn't the Lord Jesus said, rejoice that your names are written in heaven? Rejoice that your names are written in heaven? I would say that's a good reason to rejoice. We need to rejoice in the savior of our salvation. First Peter chapter one.

Again, I know you folks just went through first and second Peter, because I got a little bit of time here. I would love to read first Peter chapter one verses three through chapter verse nine. This passage just thrills my soul for these precious truths and promises. First Peter chapter one, I love this reminder. Verse three, blessed be the God and father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy has begotten us again onto a living hope.

How did he do it? By the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. And I love I love these next promises coming up. To an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that fadeth not away reserved in heaven for you. I love reservations, especially to a good meal.

I love reservations, but this is God's reservation. This inheritance, all these innumerable blessings reserved in heaven for you, and notice verse five, you and I are kept by the power of God, not our own power, through faith, on the salvation, and notice the next phrase, ready to be revealed. And the last time, wherein you and I what? Greatly, notice the adverb, greatly rejoice, not just rejoice, it says greatly rejoice. And then it goes on to say, but skipping down to verse eight.

Love verse eight, it's very precious to me, talking about our savior, whom having not seen, you love. In whom, though now you see him not yet believing, you rejoice with joy unspeakable and full glory. Can anybody translate what it means unspeakable? Can anybody give me a great definition of what unspeakable means? It's like you talk about eternity here.

There's not enough words. You rejoice with joy unspeakable and full glory. And then it says, receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls. What a blessed hope we have. For now is our salvation nearer than when we first believed.

You know the interesting thing about that verse in Romans thirteen eleven? The word now and near. Now refers to time, near refers to space. With every new day that God grants us, every heartbeat, every breath, every step, every tick on the clock, we're nearer to being with him. That's a promise.

Regardless of what you feel, or I feel, or think, our salvation is near than we first believe. Think about that. Do you think those are good reasons to rejoice? Wow. It's okay if you get enthusiastic.

It's alright. Like Chris says, you know, the Pentecostals have all the fun, you know. It's okay. It's okay if you show some emotion. It's alright.

I would say that's a good reason to rejoice. And then in the ongoing sanctification of our saved souls, can anybody in the audience quote Jeremiah fifteen sixteen? Anybody? Jeremiah, the weeping prophet who went through a lot of tears and trials and trouble because of what God was dealing with Jerusalem. He said, thy words were found and I did eat them, which is a metaphor.

Thy words were found and I did eat them and thy word thy word was onto me the joy and rejoicing of my heart for I'm called by your name. Thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of my heart. That's telling me a whole lot that Jeremiah really had a desire to know the Lord, to seek the Lord, to know him. That's what it's really telling me. Are we hungry for God's word like Jeremiah?

Of course that's a metaphor, do we eat these words? Do we... Someone said, to eat is human, to digest is divine. Funny to me too. Yes.

And then what did Psalm one hundred nineteen one hundred three, how sweet are thy words unto my taste, Yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth. And believe me, love sweet things and I love sugar. I love sugar. Did I ever tell you my four food groups are salt, sugar, fat, and grease? And I love all the things that are bad for you.

I really do. But yes, do we have the attitude of these folks like Jeremiah? I got a little toy here that I became fascinated with. This is an object lesson. I got a little toy right here.

I saw this when I was in New York a couple of years ago. Do you know what these are called? A Sunny Jiggler. That's what it's called. It costs about a dollar 98 for plastic, you know.

It's got a photoelectric eye in it. And, I named my little friend Gladys. You might figure out why I call her Gladys. Excuse me? Well, that sounds like an object lesson.

You know, gladness responds to light. The brighter the light, the more rejoicing. I would say that's a motion of rejoicing and gladness, wouldn't you say? Does anybody know Psalm 119 verse one thirty? Somebody like to read that?

One of their brothers like to read Psalm 119 verse one thirty. Entrance of your words gives light. It gives understanding to the simple. Yeah. The entrance of thy word gives light.

It gives understanding. The word entrance means the idea of exercise. When you and I open this book, we're looking into what? A great book of light. It's alive and powerful.

And, yeah, it gives light. And, you know, I I had to share with you, I'm so excited about this topic about the bible. So many times when I have a quiet time and and besides second Timothy three sixteen, all scripture is profitable, or is given by inspiration is profitable for what? Doctrine, reproof, correction, instruction, and righteousness. You know God really delights to reveal what he's like to us?

He really delights to do that. Besides those four things in second Timothy three sixteen, and I have been over the moon, if I can use that phrase, I've been over the moon so many times when I feel like God is speaking to me through this book besides those four things, doctrine, reproof, correction, instruction, and righteousness. I had just been over the moon so many times, and and it just I feel like I'm in the third heaven for that for that time. And that's what I love about this book. God delights, like, you know, Moses said, show me your glory.

He delights to show his glory to us through this book. He really, really does. And so that's why we need to rejoice in it like these other, you know, these reasons to rejoice. Well, I have come to realize, and am convinced that the more you and I rejoice in God's written word, the more you and I are to rejoice in the living word. Do you agree with that statement?

The more we get excited about our savior, fall in love with him, long for him, look for him, wanna be like him, we're gonna rejoice too. Even in the midst of all the events that are going on in the present world, do you and I have this response to, do we rejoice at God's word? Ask yourself that. Well, moving on, he responds with an anticipation in Psalm 119 verse 161 b, the second part of that. So he responded with an answer, and now he's going to respond with an anticipation.

30:18 Anticipation of Christ's Return

I'm actually looking forward to lunch. But for the believer, what is the highest anticipation you and I should be looking for? The return of Christ. I always appreciate what Chris says. You know, the next event on God's calendar for the church is the return of Christ.

I love the word imminent. It could mean anytime, any day, any place, anywhere. He could return. That should be the highest anticipation you and I should have. He's gonna return and deliver us from this sinful world, deliver us from this sinful bodies, deliver us from all our bills, deliver us from all our cares, all our worries, all our pains, and, there's a whole lot of no more's.

That's the highest anticipation that you and I should have. He's coming again. Maybe morning, maybe evening, maybe and, anyway, you know the song. Okay. So anyway, he responded with anticipation to what?

Find great treasure in God's word. Likewise, you and I need to respond with anticipation every time and any time we open this book on our own. I got three reasons. I got a principle, I got a prayer, and I got a pursuit. Matthew six twenty one, I'll just quote the verse to you.

The Lord Jesus is speaking. And for me, this is a very powerful principle. It's very, what's the word? It's very convicting. The Lord Jesus said, for where your treasure is, there your heart will be.

Now naturally narrowing things down for a believer, my treasure is either in the things of this world or in things above. That's... There's no in between ground. Do you agree with that? For where your treasure is, there your heart will be.

So in the routine and mundane things of life besides the Lord's day, our treasure is either in the things of this world or the things of heaven. That's pretty convicting. That's a really powerful principle, and the Lord Jesus said that. There's actually a great prayer. I call this the treasure hunter's prayer.

Look at Proverbs chapter two. I call this Solomon is speaking. Proverbs chapter two verses one through five is a tremendous prayer for you and you and myself on how to find treasure from God's word. It's a tremendous prayer. Proverbs chapter two, Solomon's the writer, he's the speaker.

Proverbs chapter two verse one through... Well, let's make one through six. Solomon wrote a long time ago, he says, my son... Well, just take that like God speaking to you and I. My son, if...

Notice a preposition if, it appears quite a few times, If thou will receive my words and hide my commandments with thee, so that thou inclined thy heart ear unto wisdom and apply thine heart to understanding, yea, if thou criest after knowledge and lift up thy voice for understanding, and notice verse four, if if you seek her as silver and search for her as for hid treasures, then, this is a cause and effect verse, then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom, out of his mouth come knowledge and understanding. So this verse is what they call verses or what they call a cause and effect. If we will do this list of things, now it's a fairly long list, and then God says you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. I think that's a tremendous prayer.

I really do. I I I mean, we should, you know, do it for our own lives. And then I love the prayer of Psalm one nineteen verse 18. Can anybody quote that for us? Psalm one nineteen verse 18.

This is a great prayer anytime you and I open our bible. Can anybody quote Psalm one nineteen verse 18? Anybody? Okay, if one of the brothers would read it out. Psalm 119 verse 18.

I don't know your name, my friend, but you better believe that God delights to show us wondrous things. He does. Open my eyes. I want to see your glory. I want to know you.

I wanna be in all of you. Open my eyes. He delights to do that. That's a tremendous prayer. I I would challenge you to ask ask God to do that, show you show you wonderful things.

He delights to do it. He delights to do it. And then we got Paul's pursuit in Philippians three seven eight. I'll just try to quote it to you. The brother of the Lord's Supper said it, but Paul said, but what...

And by the way, in Philippians three through 10, actually I guess verse 13, I think that is the greatest testimony of any sinful mortal that I have ever read. Paul said, but what things were gain to me? Those I counted loss for Christ. Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things and do count them but, some scriptures say, dung or waste. To count all things but loss, for what reason?

But to know the Lord Jesus in a more personal way, an intimate way. I love Paul's, I really, really love Paul's pursuit there. I'm going to read a line from a hymn book. It's in number two nineteen for an illustration. Number two nineteen in your red hymn book, that this would be my prayer, that this would be your prayer.

Verse one. The believer's prayer, psalm or hymn number two nineteen verse first first verse, open thou mine eyes, that sounds like one nineteen verse 18, that I may behold in thy word rich treasures better far than gold. Let me know my need, Lord, and thy glories see. Grow in grace and knowledge more and more like thee. That'd be my prayer for my life.

I hope that would be your prayer for your life too. Like I said, the Lord delights to reveal himself to us. Are we seeking him to know him more? Well, again, I'm going to say again, I am convinced I personally believe that the more you and I anticipate to find truths and treasures about our personal savior in the written word, the more we will anticipate his imminent return. Do you and I have that response?

Do we open this book with the anticipation of finding wonderful things about our savior? Do you have that response? Do I have it? And last of all, in verse one sixty three, he responds with adoration for God's word. When it comes to adoration, it demands information, it demands an object, and of course, for the psalmist, it was the word of God.

38:58 Responding with Adoration for God's Word

I'm so thankful that God acted first, but what is our response? We love him because he first loved us. What should our response be? The one who set us free. And will everybody...

And I love the reminder of second Corinthians five fourteen and fifteen, if you'll please turn there. Second Corinthians chapter five verses fourteen and fifteen, these verses speak for themselves. I want you to evaluate your life as I evaluate my life anew in two Corinthians five fourteen-fifteen. I want you to evaluate your lives today as I evaluate mine. Second Corinthians five verse fourteen and fifteen.

For the love of Christ constrains us because we thus judge that if one died for all and he did, then we're all dead. And that he died for all, that they, that you, that I, which live, should not henceforth live unto ourselves, which I'm still pretty good at, but unto him which died for us and rose again. You know it's a wonderful thing to have fire insurance to know you're not going to hell. That's a wonderful thing. But that doesn't mean we can just do our own thing now to know you got fire insurance.

What are we doing with our lives? Are we living onto him or are we living for self? Ask yourself that question. I ask myself, since Jesus has saved me, who am I living? Am I living for the things of this world, my own agenda, or am I living for the Lord?

Ask yourself. We should no longer live unto ourselves. By the way, I don't know the hearts of any in here and I don't wanna know that, but if you're not, God allows U turns. I love that little bumper sticker. God allows U turns, the law might not.

But you know, you can turn today. You can turn back to him. He allows you turns. So are we living onto ourselves or are we living onto him, the one who died for us? Ask yourself that.

That's a tough question. I don't know who Bernard of Clairvaux was, but he had this powerful phrase, what we love, we will grow to resemble. What we love, we will grow to resemble. And I am convinced the more I love this book and try to trust and obey what it says to me, that the more I will love the Lord Jesus, what? We will be more like him.

Do you agree with that? The more I love this book and want to trust and obey it, the more I'm gonna love my savior and, yeah, I'll be a little bit more like him. Not that we'll ever attain perfection in this life. So what we love, we will grow to resemble. And of course, we're gonna be conformed to his image someday.

Well, I like this little phrase from Our Daily Bread. The more we read love the sacred pages, the more we will know and love the rock of ages. Do you and I have that response? The key to my little devo, I I consider more of a devo, the key to my devo is how's your personal quiet time. That's the key.

I don't know what you guys do in your private life. You don't know what I do. The whole key to all four of these responses is your quiet time. Do you have one? Are you enjoying it more and more?

That's the whole key. Our quiet time. Are we investing in this time? And I will close with one of my most favorite phrases about the word of God. Some books inform, some books reform, but only one book transforms.

God's in the business of transforming us, what, inside out? It's what's on the inside, or like someone said, it's who's on the inside and what really counts. It's not our outward appearance, it's what's on the inside that counts. Some books inform, some books reform. This is the only book that will transform the way we think, act, talk, everything.

Do you agree with that? God help us, to really, really, have these four responses. Lord help us. Let's close in prayer. Our father in heaven, foremost of all, we thank you for the gift of your son, the lord Jesus Christ.

Truly, he is the unspeakable gift, the incomparable gift, and, I'm still lost in wonder what, Lord Jesus, what you did on the cross for me. Thank you for saving my soul. I can't thank you enough. Dear Lord, we thank you also for the written word of God. What a possession you have given us.

I pray that we, I, from here on out to the last days or to the rapture, would have these four responses like the Psalmist did about your word. We'd have an attitude of all for it. If we don't have it, help us. We would rejoice at your word if we don't have that, help us. We would respond with anticipation of finding great things about you.

If we don't have it, help us. And we'd fall more in love with this book that would help us fall more in love with you. You are so worthy to adore and so much more. There's just not enough words to say. You're just more wonderful than we can comprehend.

But thank you for the blessed hope that we're going spend eternity in your presence. I can't wait. Even so, come quickly today. And, we close in Jesus' precious name. Amen.
