0:03 Opening remarks and prayer

Was that a crack about my delicate shade of blonde beard here? I truly appreciate you trying to drag us into cholesterol infamy. And I and I think I understood all of it even though I couldn't perform all of it, and if they were recording the the microphone while I was singing, you can you can prove that. The only part I didn't get was that olive you were talking about. Yeah.

The formada olive, or isn't that an olive or something? I I don't know what a formada is, so I just figured it sounded like something I heard before. I hope you'll bear with me today. I may have said this before, but every time I speak, the message is deeply personal. I I don't know how the Lord does it.

I shouldn't be surprised at it, but he orchestrates something for me to speak on. And maybe Roger's behind this. He always schedules things. Maybe he knows what I need more than I do, but it it ends up being a lesson for me. So I hope you get something out of it.

I'll do my very best to communicate as as possible. Let's pray. Father, we are so thankful that you brought us here today. We we know that you have each one of us here for a specific reason, Lord. Pray that it might be...

Mine might be that I I communicate your word, not mine. That I might pass along what it is that you would have these beautiful people, your children to hear. Pray now as we go forward that we'll be in all ways honoring to you. So we're gonna continue in our study of the book of John. We're gonna primarily be in the first half of John chapter 16.

So if you wanna turn there, we'll get there in a minute. But let's consider the sweep of John, if you will. Where we are in our study, where we are in the the structure of the book. We're somewhere between the anointing that that occurs in chapter 12 and the eventual betrayal, which comes up in chapter 18. And now the Lord has decided, and John takes a lot more time, five, six chapters worth of effort to to devote to this final teaching that that he wants to impart to his disciples.

So it reminded me, it sort of hit me, kinda hard. My my son got married a couple months ago. Now, hard to believe already. And, I I I felt this this desire, this this... I don't know, some some thing that was stuck inside of me that just had to come out.

And it was that that last little bit. You know, Daniel, I've done I've done the best I could, and I messed up a couple times and maybe more than a couple. But but before you go, this is the last thing I wanna tell you. And there was a few of them, and you can tell it was a little bit emotional, not surprising with me, but they're very important matters. And and so I get the impression the Lord had that that feeling, this impendingness.

And and in a sense, you can see that when he says, you know, I've longed to share this night with you, to share this last supper with you when he talks about, you know, the the last supper and and imparts to them what we've done just recently, earlier this morning, to remember him. And now now we we move along, and we're gonna talk a lot about how he's gonna leave us or leave them, and in a sense us, and and where we are in that process or that economy, if you will, and the holy spirit and the teaching around that. So I'm gonna start with a short passage in John chapter 14 verses 16 through 18, and then we'll jump to John fifteen twenty six through the the first half of the chapter there. John fourteen sixteen says, and I will pray the father, and he will give you another helper that he may abide with you forever, the spirit of truth whom the world cannot receive, but it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

I will not leave you orphans. I will come to you. Now now chapter 15 verse 26. But when the helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the father, the spirit of truth who proceeds from the father, he will testify of me. And you also will bear witness because you have been with me from the beginning.

Verse 16. These... Or or verse one of 16. These things I have spoken to you that you should not be made to stumble. They will put you out of the synagogues.

Yes. The time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he offers God's service. And these things they will do to you because they have not known the father nor me. But these things I have told you that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them. And these things I did not say to you at the beginning because I was with you.

5:08 Sorrow fills disciples' hearts

And when he has come, he will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment. Of sin because they do not believe in me, of righteousness because I go to my father and you see me no more. Of judgment because the ruler of this world is judge. I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. However, when he, the spirit of truth has come, he will guide you into all truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears, he will speak, and he will tell you things to come.

He will glorify me for he will take of what is mine and declare it to you. All things that the father has are mine, therefore I said that he will take of mine and declare it to you. So as a general outline, we'll discover these things as we go forward. Who is this helper or the spirit of truth? What is his function, this helper spirit of truth, and why do we need him?

Okay? We'll take a little detour and and and try to understand what the Lord's telling us about why he's teaching this now. But, those are the three things I want you to to to sort of concentrate on as we walk through. Who he is? What's his function?

And why do we need him? So I think the the easier place to start is in the why. Why do we need him? Really, Devin and Vinay last week, set this up perfectly, and and no surprise, they followed scripture, and and we had the great opportunity of hearing two sermons with three points in them. Right?

So six points, last week. We we heard that living the Christian life required some cleansing. You remember taking those bad vines out, some abiding. We had to abide with him, and and Devin gave you that example of Jacob was not abiding with us until he came into this room. There's also some obedience that we we have to the Lord.

Bene went on and said, you know, with all that we can be the friend of God, but we're called to be the light of the world. And unfortunately, darkness hates light, and that's something that we needed to understand, and the Lord, prepared us for this message today. So he's really told us about how we... Or how he has asked us to live in this world, which is enemy territory. Let's contrast though to what it doesn't say.

It doesn't say, go and hide. Wait for me to rescue. Fight. Revolt. None none of that.

Pick a leader. Rise up. That... That's not that's not the message that he's saying. He's saying bear much fruit.

Shine in a dark place. It's a solitary mission for each one of his disciples to bear witness of him. Sure, he encourages us to be with other saints as we are today, and we do through our our daily walk, our weekly walk, whatever, But he calls us to an individual mission with direct instruction, not to call to a nation or an army, but he calls to you and to me to have our individual walks daily with him. So what's the response of the world? It says that the world will hate us, will hate him, does...

9:07 Hatred and persecution of believers

So if we skip ahead to to verses two and three in chapter 16, we see just how deep this hatred is. It says, he will put you out of the synagogues. Now putting a Jew, an Israeli at that time, out of the synagogue was tantamount to pushing him out of society. You know, as as much as they they they messed it up and and were were not following the exact covenant or the promise that that that the Lord had called Abraham to, still they had this societal grouping where they gather they gathered. It was at the synagogue.

It's where where most of the the social atmosphere or the the the congregation of who they were, it was a big part of what they were at that time. So in a sense, they would also be removed from their families. Their their... The people they grew up with, those that had mentored them. In many ways, it's it's it's disconnecting.

So it would be an awful thing to be put out of the synagogue at that time. And yet, they were part of Rome. Right? I mean, Rome was ruling, but they still had this microcosm that they were part of. You know, I I have had the opportunity to do some work in The UK recently, and I had to travel there this summer, and and so I I'm getting acquaintances with a couple people.

And we were emailing back and forth, and the one guy around the July 4 said, you know, I kinda know what it feels like now for you guys to have July 4. Right? That's our Independence Day. And you remember, I mean, does anybody follow the newspaper about The UK where they had this Brexit thing where, you know, here's England, long a wonderful big nation. The sun never set on part of the nation of the British for a while, but they they joined this European Union.

You know, and it was supposed to be better. It was supposed to be this economic powerhouse, and it did and it does, and it's got great concepts, but but still they felt like they were underneath something. They felt like they were contributing more than they were getting. They felt like... And and they voted, right, to be independent.

I I think there's some some idea there. You can get the impression that how maybe the Jews felt being under the oppression of Rome. This was supposed to be good. I mean, Rome builds roads. They have armies.

How can you argue with the success? But yet, these people were there wanting to get out of that, to to remove themselves from it. So says not only will they kick you out of the synagogue, but what else? They'll kill you. It's one thing to be cast out.

It's one thing to fear losing your friends and your social life and and all those... Whatever came with that synagogue, but to be threat... Under threat of death. Well, now that's pretty harsh. That's difficult for anybody to consider.

These people do it in the name of God. They'll figure that they're serving God by killing the Christians. So so this is the message that the Lord is providing to his close disciples. You know, we don't have that persecution today, but we're to live as if we did. And we might wanna practice now living as if we did because the day may come when we will live as we do, have that type of persecution that we might face death because of it.

So I don't wanna get on my political hobby horse because that's not where I'm going. We know that society is going to drift down. So it's essentially the setting of stage. The Lord has called us to be in this world. He's asked us not to hide.

He's asked us to shine. It's a solitary mission for each one of us. Well, not you, but does it make you feel lonely? Does it make you feel like, as the Lord referred to, an orphan? All by myself.

13:50 Good news: we are not alone

This is the primary answer to why he's teaching that now. You're gonna be in a hostile world. They will hate you and even seek to kill you, but I want you to know you're not alone. I'm sending you a helper. Now the translation...

With all the translators that I've read several different ones have struggled to put a single word on this Greek word, parakletos or clitos. I'm not sure exactly how to say it. I need to bone up on my Greek, I guess, but it's the same word. It translated in several different translations as helper, comforter, a counselor, an advocate. The NIV in different translations translates to two different ways, counselor and advocate.

A counselor with parentheses, comforter, encourager, advocate, spirit, friend, comforter with parenthesis, counselor, helper helper, advocate, intercessor, strengthener, standby. So I think it's... We're trying to understand who he's sending to us. Right? Who is he sending to us?

One that will be a helper, a friend, an advocate. An advocate is like a lawyer, and I don't know if you've ever dealt with lawyers, but there's some lawyers that, you know what, if I'm ever in a fight, I want that guy on my side. Right? Because he advocates for his cause really strongly whether he believes in it or not. He advocates for you.

He's your... He... In a sense, you're paying him. We're not paying the Holy Spirit, but he is... He's gonna advocate on our behalf.

It's like the Trinity. You know, I can't explain the Trinity, but it... It's as if we need at least three aspects of the Lord to understand who God really is. The same way for the the the Holy Spirit, and the spirit that he is gonna send, there's just much... Too much to say it in just one word.

So why the spirit of God? Why is he sending the spirit of God? Because others, in spite of our best efforts and help, are not perfect. You know, my my wife can testify to that, I'm not perfect. And, many of you, the rest of you, if if you haven't had the chance, I'm sure you would one day know that I'm not perfect.

But it's as if instead of... In spite of that, we're called to be one. Right? We're called to be one as husband and wife, and and I had this idea that it's kinda like a three legged race. Have you have you ever you ever been in a three legged race where you strap two...

One of your legs and one of their legs together, and then you run down the race course and try and win the race. Right? Well, frequently, 75% of the people that start running down the course, where do they end up? Ground. On Right?

And they're stumbling over each other, and the one saying, no. I'm supposed to be... You're supposed to... And the other one saying, told you. And, you know, it...

It's it's that that difficult struggle that we find ourselves in. But the holy spirit is is going to attach himself to us, and we'll talk more about that. The ones that do good are the ones like Jim and Tammy, you know, where where they they get together, they communicate, they say go, and Jim picks her up and runs down the course with her. Right? I'm sorry.

I'm sorry. I got that wrong. Tammy picks him up and runs down the course with us. Brother, you shouldn't have sat in the front row. So spirits are gonna be the best helper, comforter, and advocate for us.

18:07 What the Spirit of Truth does

You have been with me for all this time. And and in a sense, they can't help but tell the story. Right? You know, you remember the time... How about that one time when...

And and we went up and and then it's as if those stories are right there in their heart on the tongue... On the edge of their lips, because that's what a witness does. Right? In a sense, a witness in court is compelled to tell what he knows. Now in court, the judge sits there and compels the witness under penalty of whatever, you know, putting him in jail or whatever it is to tell that.

But these guys are compelled, and we'll feel compelled just because of what they know. I I mean, we we heard about it earlier today, I think it was John chapter 12... Or no. It was Acts chapter three. I I can't...

I don't have anything else, but what I do have, let me tell you about it. In the name of Jesus, get up, walk. Peter and John couldn't help but tell what they knew at that time. So these 11 had been with him for a long time, and imagine men living in close proximity. I don't know if you've ever left with you know a bunch of men, guys, ladies, maybe it's the same for women, but you learn a lot of things about living with people, And and they had lived with him and they had learned, and yet they could know he was different.

He was special. He could live up to what he had said. You know, it makes me wonder, what's your story? How's your story about when Jesus touched your heart? Is it right there at the tip of your tongue?

Is it always coming out of you? Is it like when you got married? Or maybe it's easier for me now when my son got married. Oh, what happened to you this summer? Oh, we had a big summer.

My son got married. I wanna tell everybody. I got a new daughter. I'm so thankful that, her her parents have seen fit to loan her out to us on occasion. So...

But how about when Jesus touched your heart? How about when I was 16 years old and and a guy that, you know, wasn't the bad guy, He wasn't the one messed up in a bunch of problems. He he seemed like he had it all together, but on the inside, he knew. I knew. I didn't have it all together.

I couldn't do it on my own. I came to that realization that if if if I was gonna have to live this life, I couldn't do it without help. Lord, I need your help. That's my story. What's yours?

You know, it doesn't have to be the same as everybody else's. We don't all have to have been, you know, at the at the awful low point in our lives where where the Lord crushed us to that point and then brought us out in a miraculous change of life. I'm so thankful for those stories, and if you got one, tell it. But then there's the other one where, you know, I just came to the realization. I I I didn't know what else to do.

This makes sense, Lord. How can you use me? Well, you know what? There's somebody out there just like each one of you, just like that person that was at the lowest spot and and was out of the the... I can't relate to that person.

I'm sorry. I can love him, but I don't know where he was. I don't know if he was buried in booze or or dug himself into a drug habit. I can't I can't commit... I can't relate to that, but I can relate to the guy that's been struggling his way up the ladder trying to get to the top and and realizing where it's at.

I I understand how that guy feels. I can I can witness to him? You You think about these guys that were hearing this story. They had the same thing. Think of John's story.

Think of Peter's story. Think of Thomas's story. He was listening. I didn't believe until I saw it in his hands and in his side. Even since then, Paul, the chief of sinners, once persecuted the church, Paul Holland had wonderful things to say.

If, you know, it was announced earlier, if you can pick up the the help, thing that he had for witnessing to people five things on your hand, and when you wake up, you're... Good. Pick it up. It was... It's a good thing.

23:04 Contributions of Father, Son, and Spirit

Okay? And then he sends him as if on a mission with a purpose. He... He's sending him the spirit of truth with a purpose. The father says he gives them in the sense of a gift, presenting that spirit for the believer.

Also in the sense that he he he... It proceeds from the father says. In other words, he generates it, not that he creates it because it always was. It's not a new creation, but as if it continually comes from the father. This idea that the spirit and the father are one, and it's being provided not just as a, you know, a flash and as an event, but continuous provision, as if a stream flowing, it's always coming, proceeding from the father.

So before we move forward, let me ask you, what's the difference between sending and giving? Says the son gives and the father... I'm sorry. The son sends and the father gives. What's the difference?

Not much. Right? And I think that's just... Isn't a contradiction. It's really a complementary issue.

They're so close that the son asks and the father gives, the son sends and the father provides. They're they're they're they're one. There's no separation between the two of them. They are one God. So the spirit, we talked a little bit about him being a helper and and a comforter and many other things, but it also says that he is a spirit of truth.

Truth embodies which is what is true, what is right, what is in perfect alignment with God. Truth. He's a spirit of truth. Says he abides with us, so he's with us. He's in the same area.

He's in our lives. He's abiding. He's living. You must be close to abide. Says he will be there forever and always.

As Ray pointed out, never leaving us or forsaking us. It's exclusive to believers. You know, those that don't know him don't have the spirit. Those that do have the spirit within them. They still have the spirit bugging them, but they don't have them in in them.

This is the reason for these nonbelievers causing trouble, doing things in the name of God, but don't have a relationship with God. The spirit, on the other hand, testifies he knows Jesus. The disciples know Jesus. Those people that were religious at the time didn't know him, and therefore, they hated him. Do you know him?

Do you know him? It says he dwells with us, and we talked a little bit about this. The spirit dwells with us. Consider living with some someone. Now I have friends, good friends, but some of which I haven't lived with, and so I don't know them in the same sense.

There are some that I have lived with though. You know, I I grew up, learned to live in a house with my parents first. I was the first one, son born, but then I had to live in a bedroom with my brother, which didn't last too long, and he ended up getting the other bedroom, and then my parents thought it was good to separate them. Then then I had to live in a dorm room with some roommates. How many of you have ever done that?

And, you know, having to figure this out, this is a big shock. I've lived in a tent with some scouts or a scout master, and and you you you get to know somebody pretty good when you're shoulder to shoulder, or shoulder to foot, depending on how you had to fit in that tent, for a week. I had the opportunity and the blessing to live in the same bed with my wife. So we sleep in the same bed and you get to know somebody in a special way there too. Some say they've been in a foxhole, and you learn to live with that person out of necessity, and I'm told you can get real close to that person.

But what doesn't someone know who lives with you? Your thoughts, your feelings. My wife reads my mind pretty well. Gentlemen, you can probably say the same thing, but not a 100%. In many ways, I'm glad she doesn't know everything, I think.

But what's closer than living with somebody? Well, it says here that the spirit will be in you in you, closer than a friend, closer than a wife or a parent, knowing your every thought, motive, and belief, knowing your fears, your struggles, even your sins, close beyond comprehension. I have truly leaned on that in the last few days. I truly appreciate that the spirit's with me and in me and will make his best attempt to work through me. But it says that this indwelling will be a future event.

It says, I will pray. I will send. He will be in you. Jesus says, I'm going away to him who sent me, and yet you don't ask where I'm going. And they had asked, but not really, you know, like, I really wanna understand this.

What... What's going on? It was more along the lines of, boy, I'm really gonna suffer if you're not around. This is gonna be awful. You know?

29:20 Irony of Jesus' departure

Now can you imagine them sitting there and saying, how can that be? You taught us, you fed us, you defended us, you've led us, you've done so much for us, and yet you say if you go to the point of being dead... To being killed, if that's really what you're saying, how can that be good for us? It's it's mind blowing to hear that. But he says, if I depart, I will send.

In fact, unless I depart, he will not come. So how is this loss in an advantage? They expected a leader, maybe somebody like Moses or Aaron. Maybe they anticipated a warrior like David. Maybe even somebody like Gideon who shrank...

Had to shrink his forces and yet still conquered. At least somebody that would stand up, speak, argue, fight for them. How does that happen when he's not here? Leaders come in many forms, but few of them lead from the grave. A memory of a leader can only last so long, and still somebody takes that mantle and takes that memory and carries it forward.

So it just doesn't understand it. I think the only way we can understand this is to consider, and I'm gonna use a word that I want you to be careful about. Okay? I want you to consider the limitation of Jesus as a man. Okay?

Not that he couldn't, not that he wouldn't, but that he chose to put himself in a body of a man. Now let's... The best example of this or explanation of this is in Philippians two where it says that, you know, being in a form of God, he did not consider it robbery be equal with God, but made himself of no reputation taking the form of a bond servant servant and coming in the likeness of men. He was in appearance as a man. That man had two arms to hug, 10 fingers to touch, two legs to wide...

Or to walk, two eyes to see, one mouth to speak. He chose that. His miracles didn't include being in two places at the same time. He had great ways to get places, but he was one man with one purpose, one life to live here on earth purposely. Not that he couldn't, not that he didn't have power, don't take anything away from him.

We made a choice. Now he's saying the spirit, the third part of the trinity, the the spirit of God, the spirit of truth will come, and he will live in each and every one of you, always and forever without fail, closer than we can imagine even in us. In some ways, in partial ways, that intimate relationship that was in the garden with Adam and Eve and now somewhat more restored because the Lord wants to be in our heart. And now he also gives us that individual attention, that special indwelling that we couldn't have in any other way. So let's return quickly to what he does.

33:20 The Spirit convicts the world

In this case, the judge needs no convincing. The spirit of the world is convincing all of the sin of the world, and that the world is this part, this physical being, this physical world here on earth that's ruled by another, other than God, that's leading us away from God. He says he convicts of sin, those actions which are against God's way. Missing the mark, wrong in God's eyes. He convicts of righteousness, the opposite of sin, those actions which are correct in God's eyes, which he accepts, hitting the mark, following his will, and of judgment, discerning between the two what is right right and what is wrong.

Also, in terms of who is right and who's wrong. Says, sin because they do not believe me. That's the ultimate sin. Don't believe in the Lord of the universe. Entire history of man in the bible points to this one where the Lord is raised up after he has been crucified.

He's acceptable sacrifice. Man is incapable of our own pleasing God, but there's one right way to him. Belief in his son who died on the cross, was buried, and rose again the third day of righteousness because I go to my father and you see me no more. The ultimate acceptance of the sacrifice is a risen Christ, seen by many and witnessed to have ascended into heaven, accepted by God. Judgment because the ruler of this world is judged.

The ruler of this world, Satan, in the hearts of men is wrong when he says, if there is a God, he has no claim on your life. He's wrong when he said, you are the God. What you think is right, or the creation is God, or another man is God. All of them, lies that he wants us to believe. Jesus' life to that point, his eventual crucifixion, and thereafter is testimony to the judgment that this ruler is wrong.

So he... The the spirit convicts of what is wrong, what is right, and who is wrong, and who is right. Now we understand from Jesus' words himself what he is trying to accomplish by this teaching. Now we don't always get this as clearly in the in the scriptures. We have to search for it, but I think this one's pretty clear, so we should treasure it when we do get it.

He is telling us now so that we don't stumble, so that the disciples don't stumble. If if you're gonna trip over something, it's nice to know it's there ahead of time. Right? You know, the rock in the path or the bike in the garage or the clothes basket in the hallway. You know, if somebody says, watch out for that, we have a chance to avoid it and not trip over it.

And that's what he's saying here. Don't lose your faith. What's coming is persecution. Don't trip over that fact. Know that it's there.

He didn't take it out of the way. He didn't take it off of the path, but he said, no. It's there. Be prepared. Maybe he's even foreshadowing Peter's denial here.

I don't know. But he's saying, look. It's gonna be there. Understand it. But he's also saying, you know, it's it's gonna be painful.

This is not an easy life. You're gonna feel like you're alone. I'm gonna provide the help, but it's gonna be painful. Now what kind of pain do we know in life? There's a pain of touching the stove, and what do we get out of that?

We don't touch the stove anymore. Right? There's the pain of, you know, my hip is not working. What do we get out of that? I need to get it fixed.

Right? So let's let's do that. But but there's also pain that the runner has, you know. We just saw the Olympics. That pain that the runner has is as an athlete calls...

What what's pain called in athletes? It's weakness leaving the body. Right? We gotta struggle through that. It's that kind of pain.

It's there for a purpose. It's to make you stronger. Some pain needs to be pushed through. Jesus is pointing this out. It's coming.

You better be ready for it, but push through. Keep moving. He says, I didn't tell you before because I was with you. He was there. He could handle things.

He could explain things. He was physically there, but now I'm not gonna be there. So you need to know this now, but I want you to remember it. Do not be unaware, not be surprised. It's like my dad telling me something ahead of time.

Hopefully, I look back on and say, you know, he was... Something going on there. I guess I should have listened. Lord also says that he has more things to tell. You cannot bear them now.

Our capacity is limited. But this idea of progressively revealing and for us to learn from milk to meat, from building block on top of building block, we... That's the way we learn, and that's the way he's telling us we learn. There's more to come, but I'm not gonna be here, so there is somebody that can help you. It says that the spirit will, I'm gonna run through these quickly, guide you into all truth.

Says he will not speak on his own authority. In other words, he's not another god. I'm not sending a new guy. This isn't another message. It's the same message.

It's one god. He's so close that he's he's gonna speak on authority of the father and the son. Says he will tell you of things to come. Prophecy and predicting the future is a very powerful thing. It gives us hope.

It gives us confirmation. It says the spirit will glorify Jesus. The ultimate purpose of God's plan is to point to Jesus and say, that's the plan. This is the pinnacle of what I've accomplished. He says he will take of what is mine and declare it to you.

All things that he says are from the father. All things that the father has are Jesus's. All things that Jesus are declaring through the spirit are from the... So the point is, and that's a confusing passage, but the way I take it is they're just rock solid tight. There's no seam between the message of the father, the son, and the spirit.

So now we have the spirit indwelling within us. That's the message he is trying to convey is the one that Jesus was trying to convey either. So let's summarize quickly. Why did Jesus send and the father give the spirit? Because he knew the hard lonely mission that was left for believers to do.

He knew that they, we can't do it without the spirit. Who is this spirit? Well, in various forms, he's a helper, comforter, counselor, advocate, friend, intercessor, strengthener, a standby. He's sent by the son, given by, and proceeds from the father. Truth abides in him, and he abides with us forever.

He will dwell with and in every believer. What does the spirit do? Says he bears witness of Jesus. Says he convicts of sin, of righteousness, and judgment. He guides into all truth, speaks it is as it is communicated to him.

There's only one message here. He tells of things to come. And more... Most importantly, he glorifies Jesus Christ. That's his purpose.
