0:00 My son's oatmeal
Today, I made my son oatmeal, my children oatmeal, because I, a lot of times, make breakfast on Sunday. And one of my children stuck out his lower lip and he he was complaining about not getting enough oatmeal. And the funny thing was last week, he was complaining about getting too much and he didn't finish it. And so then I had an opportunity to have a conversation about being thankful. And it was actually good.
I even started to write a rap song after that. I was inspired. And then I came to breaking new bread, and it was really neat because there was a lot of talk on thankfulness. And I think the reason I'm so inspired is because I'm I'm just... I'm over overwhelmed with the things of this world.
And and so the things that my children are struggling with, I'm struggling too. And it's so easy to be absolutely blessed in the the ways that you can never imagine. Yet all you can see is that one little thing that wasn't exactly how you wanted it to be, and then you start to complain. And in the conversation, I talked with my my children about, you know, when you complain, you're you're you're not complaining against dad. Just like the children of Israel weren't complaining against Moses.
You're complaining to Vince, the the god who provided you, dad, who made that oatmeal for you and you and ultimately, as Christians, everything that we were provided is a gift. Even if that be death, even if that be suffering. And that is a reality. That's not that's not just something we say so that we can be positive, and we can say something over and over again to override those thoughts, and we can overcome by affirmation and things like that. And that's, of course, a thought that I have because I had spent a little bit too much time doing self help.
2:30 Philippians one twenty one
It always comes up in the track group when I haven't properly prepared. It's the one that comes up every time. It is Philippians one twenty one and I think it represents... I said it's my favorite because it represents to me in a nutshell why I'm a Christian and the benefits of being a Christian. Philippians one twenty one.
For to me to live is Christ and to die is gain and also it's something that I can remember because it's a short verse, one of the shorter verses in the Bible and I've spent hours trying to memorize a single verse and for whatever reason, just doesn't work out. But but I can remember this one. I can remember what it means anyways. And part of it is because it's it's it's an odd phrasing. Says for me, to live is Christ.
And it's odd because to live is not Christ. I mean, logically speaking. To live is a lot of things, but as I go through life, go down my timeline, and I work through things, I do a lot of things and it... I wouldn't have exactly said that was Christ. That is Christ.
Like, that linkage exactly. You know, live Christ, the equal signs in between, live is Christ. You know, I wouldn't have said that. And I think it it's what always kind of that choice of phrasing that that Paul used inspired by God made my brain think a little bit deeper about what it meant to live or what it should mean as a Christian. You know?
Paul gives a hint about his life and and how he lives when he talks at night, and I don't remember the exact verse. I wasn't able to find it when I was preparing. But he he talks about how the fact that he has learned to abound in much and little. So he... He's learned
four twelve.
What's that? Philippians four twelve. Philippians four twelve. Let's let's just read that real quick. Four twelve.
5:27 Learned the secret of contentment
Or maybe not. Maybe it's just didn't get enough oatmeal or had too much oatmeal. I don't know what it is. But whatever it is, whatever it is, he learned the secret to abounding. And so he says, for for for me to live is Christ.
And I I think that that encapsulates it. It's that I I I think that when we we meditate on him, on Christ and his suffering, I've
learned that
a lot a lot a lot about living is is perspective. You know? You can always find somebody that's a little bit worse off than you. So it's easier to look at your own suffering as a little less because, wow, someone else lost it You know? But as a Christian who is called to remember Christ weekly, and I think this is this is one of the reasons why it's so important to, why the Bible calls us to remember him in the breaking of bread.
You know, do this in remembrance of me. It's because it brings this into perspective. It's that constant focus in Christ. And and so and so when we've when we have meditated deeply on his sufferings, when we have considered what this means and how deeply he suffered, and we're thankful for that, then it puts everything else in perspective. And so we we can now appreciate we can now appreciate the suffering that we experience because there's a meaning to it.
8:01 Suffering for Christ
It it... The freedom he gives us in our life because it's not just, you know, when you're younger, you think I'm gonna go to heaven. That that might be why you're motivated to accept him. But but he he gives us opportunity to have a life that is free here in this world. Not free from suffering, but free.
Not free from suffering, but free from suffering. Not free from suffering, but not embodied from it. Free from it. For for me to live is Christ, to die is gain. I think part of that connection, he has a verse right beforehand.
So, he says, for me, for... Oh, wait. Actually, I think I wrote that down wrong. For to me, I for to me to live as Christ and so before that, he's he says, I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed but I will have sufficient courage so that now as always, Christ will be exalted in my body whether by life or by death. So often so often I, you know, I get up in the morning and then I I don't feel too good and and I have a lot going on that day and I kinda worry about, can I get through today?
You know, I know I will. I'll survive, but I'm not looking forward to it because I know that there's going to be a lot of turbulence that I have to deal with. And just the just knowing that number one, I can thank God for every single one of these things that happens today, no matter how uncomfortable or worrisome that this could have a major impact on the rest of my life today. You know, there... Something bad could happen.
My job is to deal with other people's issues, basically, trauma. That's a lot of people's jobs. Tends to be why you get paid is to solve problems. Just... I I I just...
10:50 To die is gain
And both of those things can create, you when you when you worry about them that can bring a lot great deal of suffering and for us and for Paul, death is gain. We can take actual pleasure and we're we're we're not we can't just we can take actual pleasure and we're called to look forward to this time when we're not in these broken bodies and we're not in the sinful world. To die is gain. So we we can be thankful for the fact that we can live in Christ and that death is gained. We look forward to heaven.
We look forward to a time when it won't be... We won't have to deal with our sinful spirit. We'll have perfect bodies and and we'll get to be with Christ. It won't be... I won't have to wrestle with the things of this world or trying to not think about the things of this world.
I won't have to be overcome by, I mean, everything in this world from the desire for material things that seems to get my my lust for for everything in the spectrum to to to the... To my desire for, you know, attaining of things and my own pride, those will no longer be a problem. I mean, when you really think about it, the peace that you will have... And we can have a great deal of that now, but it's never gonna be perfect with our with our sinful with still having a a sinful self but when we're in heaven, we'll be with Christ. He will light our world.
He will he will be the light. I don't know exactly how that'll work out but it'll be... His presence will be right there. I don't I don't know, like, if I'll always be able to see him, but, you know, and how that works through space and time. You know, there's gonna be a building here and...
Or am I always, like, in the same room? I don't know. I'm not sure how it works out, like, how it is that we can always see him and apparently he lights heaven or something. I've... But it's real.
It's gonna somehow affect us in a way that's that that's that's gonna be the greatest joy that we could imagine here just a lot more, you know, all the time. And that pain and suffering, the struggles, the temptations, it won't be there. So not only in this life, Paul Paul goes on to talk. You know, he's talking very much in the in the context of ministry and and we have to think that way too for ourselves. You know, for him, to die is is gain was not just about the fact that he was going to personally gain but that Christ was gonna gain as well because it says it says, Christ will be exalted in my body whether by or by death.
That's right before verse 21. So I assume that he's also talking about the fact that he won't just get the joy of being with Christ, but he will have the additional joy of knowing that he exalted Christ in this life through his death. And most of us, if things stay a little bit the same as they were, probably will not have a martyr's death like he did. There might not be quite the same exaltation, but I do know that even outside of that, when you see a Christian who is thoroughly been meditating and looking forward to homecoming, to going home. There is something amazing and and and and exalting to Christ even in that death.
That have you seen, if you seen a Christian die, it's a lot different than than than others. Even in a painful death. In fact, in in that painful death especially. Christ, the the the knowledge of where where we are going and what and and and the reality, the close reality of that has a transforming effect. So, anyways, I just wanted to share that that verse.
It was it was, inspiring to me, and I I I really have enjoyed it. And I can't remember many verses, but this one returns again and again because I gotta gotta remember something in it. It's... It seems to encapsulate what I know of the experience that we're called to as Christians.
Good morning. Let's open in prayer. Heavenly father, thank you for this opportunity we have to look at your word, pray that your holy spirit would would guide us as we we look at it, that we would understand it and have the courage to apply it to our lives. In Jesus name, amen. Amen.
Happy New Year. My message today is actually about not things that have changed, but things that are the same as last year. Just a reminder to myself and to the body here of things that have stayed the same. So the first thing that I'd like to look at to remember is that we're in a battle. Right?
16:39 Our adversary Satan
So our adversary seeks actively to prey upon upon the world, upon Christians, those who proclaim the name of Christ, and we're called to be sober and be vigilant. Sober and vigilant. This is a very... Something that, is given great weight here in this passage, vigilant, being very watchful, not to be slumberful or just to move on but to pay attention to. Opposingly, looking at the captain of our salvation, he loves and cares for us very much.
Ephesians chapter five speaks on that. This passage is often used in marriage counseling I'm sure, but I really like the picture that it gives of Christ. Ephesians Ephesians chapter five. Ephesians five verse 25 says, husbands, love your wives just as Christ also loved the church and gave himself for her that he may sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word that he might present her to himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. So here opposing Satan's desires, we have the one who loved us and gave himself for us, and he desires to purify us so he can present him...
Us to himself as a bride without spot or wrinkle. Perfect. That's his desire. He wants the best for us because of his great love for us. And so as a reminder, it's very good to know that Christ is the victor positionally, and someday, he will cast Satan into the lake of fire.
We know that he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. Right? Christ is the victor. And so today, the question we have is to whose side are we going to align ourself with day to day? Positionally, those who are saved have aligned themselves with Christ.
We've identified with Christ. He is our captain. Captain. Day to day, I find that I'm tempted by Satan. And that day to day, there needs to be a choice, not year to year, but day to day, minute to minute to follow Christ in every way through his word.
20:08 Put on the whole armor of God
Ephesians six verse 10 actually. Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to withstand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the whole armor of God that you may be able to withstand in the evil day and having done all to stand.
Now let's look at the different pieces of armor that God has given us. It's his armor. He's commanded us to put it on. What are these pieces of armor, and how can we utilize them day to day? The first piece of armor in verse verse verse 14 says, stand therefore having girded your waist with truth.
First piece is the bolt of truth. And it's very important to align the temptations that we go against, our philosophies in the world with the word of God. The word of God is truth. I was watching a video recently on physics, and it was just a very general introductory video. And it showed a man, and he was sitting in a chair, and there was a wall behind him with, like, a grid on it.
And he said he was gonna start rolling across the the stage on his swivel chair. But in reality, he was standing still or sitting still, and the wall behind him was moving. Right? And so it looked like looked like he was moving, but really that wasn't what was happening. You're being deceived.
And so we need to look at the word of God because it has the big picture. It would allow us to zoom out and see exactly what was going on. So it's very important in day to day life to put on the belt of truth that we can align, we can focus through the lens of scripture. Secondly, it's the breastplate of righteousness. And so in verse 14, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, again, something to put on.
And I believe the breastplate of righteousness speaks of the righteousness that we have because of Christ. We are clothed in our righteousness. And quite often, Satan desires to tempt us into thinking that we we can't do it and we can't do it. Tempting us into believing that somehow we're not we're not good enough for God and we're not good enough for God, but because of Christ, when God looks at us... When he looks at us, he sees his son.
And we have that standing positionally in Christ, and we must never forget the righteousness we have in him. Thirdly, we have the shoes of the preparation of the gospel of truth. The gospel of peace. I'm sorry. The gospel of peace.
This is this is interesting. It says, and having shot your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace. And I'm reminded of how often sharing the gospel isn't very spontaneous. It requires... It may happen spontaneously, but there's...
Should be preparation in our hearts, you know, spiritually, but also practically in in in how we're going to do it, that we have a plan. I think most of all that we prepare our hearts, that we'd love those who we're speaking to, that we'd have the the love of Christ in us. And it's important to realize that inactivity in this area, when we just don't go out into the world, when we stay, we're very vulnerable to the enemy. I'm I'm in school this last semester, next semester, and it's amazing how good a job other religions do at sharing their message, how consistent they are. And they have different motivations.
The motivations are salvation itself, whereas ours were commanded to by the Lord, but also ought to love and even obligation to them because of what Christ has done for us. So let's, this year, this week, today, let's prepare ourself and then go forth in obedience in sharing the in sharing the gospel of peace. Next, we have the shield of faith. We know that Satan often attacks with doubt. We know he attacks Satan or Satan attacked Eve.
First of all, with doubt in the garden and then with a direct lie. He said, did God really say? And then said, no, doc. God didn't really mean what he said. So, doubt and then a lie.
But god has given us a shield of faith and we're to use it to deflect the doubts of the devil. The helmet of salvation. And take the helmet of salvation. I think that this speaks of just encasing our mind in in our salvation that we cannot lose that. That we need to completely encompass our thoughts and the fact that in Christ, we are saved eternally.
There's nothing that can be done to make us lose that salvation. And lastly, the sword of the spirit, and this one's very clear. It tells you what it is. It's the word of God. We're given the word of God to use.
We know that sharper or it's powerful and sharper than any two edged sword. It's what the Lord Jesus used in the wilderness when he was tempted by Satan. I think that was a good example to us. We're not gonna be able to use the word of God unless we read it. So, again, that's a daily thing and sometimes even an hour by hour thing, but also to memorize it.
But doing a little bit of memorizing recently, and it's been a great blessing to me that I can meditate on it. Because I I can read the scriptures and I can glean a lesson from it, but I tend to forget it. Whereas if I memorize it, it's there. I can I can meditate continuing on this passage in Ephesians chapter six does not end with verse 17? It goes on 18.
I think 18 and continuing on a little further is very, very vital. It says, praying always with all prayer and supplication in the spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints. So we see that the prayer is always... This isn't an occasional thing, but it's something that should penetrate or permeate, I should say, our entire life. Prayer.
Prayer and supplication, lifting up other saints to God. Again, not a sloppiness. He says, being watchful to this end. It requires great great purposeness that we pray, that we wouldn't sink into the temptation of thinking that our prayers don't have any value. Perseverance and supplication for all the saints.
I don't... I really enjoy that on on Wednesdays, we often have a list of families from this local church that we pray through, and I think it'd do us well to pray for each other by name, at least at least weekly, something that I could start doing. It'd be a great exercise to do. And thirdly, one of the major points moving on is that the Lord is coming soon to snatch us up and may we leave... Live every day in expectation of that.
29:15 Our eternity is secure
There's no fighting for eternity. First Peter chapter one and verse three says, blessed be the god and father of our lord Jesus Christ, who according to his abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, To an inheritance, incorruptible, undefiled, and that is not fade away reserved in heaven for you. Who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation, ready to be revealed in the last time. In this, you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials. That the genuineness of your faith being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, whom having not seen you love, though now you do not see him, yet believing, you end of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
So as we leave today, it's an encouragement of the things that have not changed, that we're in a battle, but that Christ has given us the armor to be victorious practically in that battle, and that he is soon and that our eternity is secure in Christ.
31:25 We have such a high priest
We do have a great high priest, and that's what this portion is about. Hebrews chapter eight verse one, this is the main point of the things that we are saying. We have such a high priest and so he's just spent more than just the last chapter, but the entire previous chapter speaking about the high priesthood of the Lord Jesus Christ. And and so he says, just wanted... Wanna make sure you don't miss the point here that we do have this high priest.
He's ours. He's he's up there in heaven and he's ours. He's our high priest. And then he makes three points that... In the next couple of verses that that perhaps we could say they summarize this thought, this wonderful thought that had been given.
And so the... So we have such a high priest who is seated in the right hand of the throne of the majesty in heavens. And so the Lord Jesus Christ in the previous chapter had been presented as the priest after the order of Melchizedek and and a contrast was drawn in that chapter between the the priesthood of Aaron and his descendants versus the priesthood of the Lord Jesus Christ. And the... Perhaps the perhaps the main point made or one of the main points made in in chapter seven is that is that he lives forever.
He has an everlasting priesthood and that's the strength of the priesthood that we have. And and and so in the in the twenty third in in the twenty fourth verse of the previous chapter says, he, because he continuous... Continues forever has an unchangeable priesthood, therefore he is able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through him since he always lives to make intercession for them. And so we have the reality of this priest who... Who's...
He's there for us. And as as our verse in the eighth chapter said, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the majesty in the heavens. So in our minds, get a little picture that's painted here of the Lord Jesus Christ. Well, of the the father on the throne there and seated there right beside him is the Lord Jesus Christ and he is he is there for us. He's there forever for us.
He'll never not be there for us. He's our great intercessor and so and so that's the first point he makes that let... Let's not miss this picture that he's up there seated at the right hand of the father and he's making... He's he's applying his priesthood for us. The second point is, the second verse, he's a minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle which the Lord erected and not man.
Now here he's he's sort of drawing a contrast between what they had under Judaism. They had the tabernacle, the physical tabernacle, the tent that's set up there, and the priest going in and making atonement yearly as it describes in the next chapter, I believe. And so so there's this tabernacle there, but but he says, oh, no. No. No.
Not that tabernacle. It's he... It's the sanctuary, the true tabernacle as as though, wait, wait, it's not this thing that you've had. There's there's some spiritual reality that's being represented for it, and that's the real thing. It says, the true tabernacle which the Lord erected and not man and he's making the point that it's not an earthly tabernacle, it's a heavenly tabernacle.
So so I I think it's kinda neat because he's he's saying, you know you know, it would seem like what is earth is real on earth is real because we could reach out and touch it and handle it, but he's saying to us, no no, the real thing, the true thing is the spiritual thing. The spiritual thing is the true thing and that's what will be with us forever. So he's the minister of the sanctuary and the true tabernacle which the Lord erected and not man. So this true tabernacle I I suppose the idea... I'd be open to some other thoughts but the...
I suppose the idea is that it's the church that that that building is made of God in which the Lord Jesus is the great high priest of that of that church. Then the next point is made in the third verse. So it says, for every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices, therefore it's necessary that this one have something to offer. So if he's gonna be a high priest, he has to have something to offer and and and that's actually sort of a reference back to Hebrews five one which says this, for every high priest taken from among men is appointed for men and things pertaining to God that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins. So it says, well, if he's gonna be a priest he has to be able to offer this gift.
And and so say, well, what is the gift that Jesus offers? What is that gift? And, of course, to... This would be reminiscent of some of Andy's remarks, that gift is the Lord Jesus Christ himself and his death on the cross. So we'll read three verses from Hebrews 10 to kind of get the point of it, this gift.
Hebrews
10 verse 10, by that well we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of the Lord Jesus Christ once for all. For every every priest stands ministering daily. This is going back to the earthly priesthood. Every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifice which can never take away sins, but this man after he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever sat down at the right hand of God. He offered himself the...
That was the wonderful gift that he had to offer, and I have four or five more minutes here. So he makes, I think I think, three sort of sub sub notes or sub points under this idea that he's the priest that's there making the sacrifice and and the first sub point is in the fourth verse says, if he were on earth he would not be a priest since there are priests who offer gifts according to the law. So he... So he's saying, you know, now understand that if he were here on earth, if he were an earthly priest that he could... Or an earthly...
If he were on earth at this time, he couldn't be the priest because the earthly priesthood is is... Has to be descendants of Aaron and obviously the Lord Jesus was not a descendant of Aaron. So so if he couldn't be an earthly priest, then of necessity his priesthood would have to be a heavenly priesthood. And so we're... So the next point he's making then for us is is that our Lord Jesus Christ has a heavenly priesthood and of course we already had that in the previous chapter because in the previous chapter it says that that he he continues forever and has an unchangeable priesthood and so he's up there in the presence of the father, our great mediator because that's the idea of the priest.
And so first of all, he has to be... The first sub point is that that his is a heavenly, not an earthly priesthood. And then the next point is in the fifth verse and it's talking about the the... Both the priesthood and the gifts that were... That are earthly.
It says they they serve the copy and shadow of heavenly things as Moses was divinely instructed when he was about to make the tabernacle. He said, see that you make all things according to the pattern shown you in the mountain. Okay. So so he's saying he's saying now you have this this reality, this spiritual reality which is heavenly and the Lord Jesus is up there and he really is seated at the high at the right hand of the majesty in the heavens. He's really up there.
This is a spiritual reality and and he's saying, but these earthly things, they're they're put here for a purpose. They're pictures to illustrate what we really mean, what what is what is what is our Lord Jesus really doing up there? And so say, well, let's take a look at the... That... At the earthly priesthood and we'll...
And it's something that's being enacted in our presence or or enacted as we would sit and read the Old Testament scriptures and we can look at them and say, oh, so that's what he's doing for us up there, what what these priests are doing down here. And so it's... That's the sense of a copy. I always liked the the word shadow because a shadow is kind of interesting. So you...
You've you've seen people do this shadow art where they'll they'll put their hands up there and they'll make a bird flying across and you see a shadow going. It's very very interesting. And and the the the essence of a shadow or two... There's two things about it. A shadow is indistinct.
It it it's indistinct and yes, it's very suggestive of what it's shadowing. And so the the priesthood of the Old Testament is a picture of that spiritual reality of our Lord Jesus who sits as the great high priest in the heavenlies. It's a picture of it. It's indistinct and yet it's very suggestive. We can learn very much from it.
Now the conclusion he... That he draws or the point that he makes in connection with this point is that God had told Moses, see that you make all things according to the pattern shown you in the mountain. Why was it... Why was all this detail of the of the Old Testament? Why was this important?
Why was it important that Moses would do that just right? Well, it's because up there in the heavens, there was this spiritual reality, and God wanted to make some some picture or illustration of it, a copy, a pattern, something that would help us to understand what that's like. And so he says to Moses, over here when you're doing this thing, make sure you do it just the way I told you. There's a reason for it. It's going to be illustrating a truth, some truths that are so very, important of heavenly spiritual things.
And then the the the final subpoint of my three subpoints is found in the sixth verse. It says, now he has obtained a more excellent ministry in as much he is the media... As he is also mediator of a better covenant which was established upon better promises. And so so what is the sort of conclusion of all this is that that our spiritual high priest, the Lord Jesus, who's seated seated on the right hand of the throne of God in the heavenlies that it's a better priesthood, it's it's based upon it's based upon a better covenant and it's based upon greater, more wonderful promises than the children of Israel ever had. And and now I don't have time to go through the rest of the chapter, but the rest of the chapter is basically quoting an Old Testament scripture from Jeremiah 31 in which in which he talks about the new covenant and he talks about the laws being written in their in in their mind, in in their hearts, and and I will be their God and they they shall be my people.
Wonderful. Now the only problem I had when I got into that was that it's talking... It's... If you read it, it's explicitly applied to to the Jewish people. And I thought, oh, dear.
Does that really apply to me at all? Is that is that is that for me? That... This promise is for them. And then I noticed that in the tenth chapter that about half of that is quoted in the tenth chapter, one of the verses there.
And in the tenth chapter, it it doesn't actually return... Refer to the children of Israel at all. It refers us to them and it and and it it these promises that he'll write his word in our hearts, he applies it to the church today and it's the basis for the wonderful promise that we have in the tenth chapter that says... Or the wonderful truth that therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus. And so so through that we have these wonderful promises of a better covenant that's based upon our Lord Jesus Christ and we praise his holy name.
Amen.
Perhaps since our time is up, I should just close in prayer. Oh, Father God, we thank you that we have the the wonderful truth of of of the Lord Jesus Christ. We we have him for me... For to me to live is Christ and to die is a... Is gain.
What what a promise to have this this wonderful wonderful savior whom we can live for. What a what a wonderful thing to have that in the presence of of of a mighty enemy, Satan, to realize that we have a high priest that stands up there intercedes for us. And father, we thank you for the Lord Jesus Christ and for the beautiful, wonderful truths that we have in the scripture concerning him and praying in his precious name. Amen.
