0:00 Introduction and personal experience
Happy to be here this morning and we'd like to begin with a word of prayer. But just before I pray, I'd like to share with you a little personal experience, maybe a story from my childhood. Actually, when I was a teenager, does that still count as childhood? So, I worked at a restaurant, a barbecue restaurant in the South called Winks Barbecue. And I started there washing dishes.
And in in the in the barbecue restaurant, you have an opportunity to move up if you want to. You know, there's this hierarchy there. Washing dishes is low rung on the totem pole for sure. But I worked there for five years, from '13 to '18. Worked at this barbecue restaurant.
And I'll and I'll say this, looking back, it was a great experience for me, learned a lot of life lessons there. And one of those I want to share with you just now, but those a lot of things that I took away. One was being able to get get accustomed to being around food, learning how to cook a little, you know, that kind of thing. Not scared of the kitchen. And one another thing was how to appreciate good barbecue, which Bob Markovich can just score it off the charts when he smokes his barbecue.
But then, when I was, as I was going through this process of moving up to different positions, one of the, you know, there's there's the dishwasher I told you about and this is a barbecue restaurant. So, we served hush puppies and there, we actually had a dedicated person to do nothing but hush puppies the whole night during the rush and so, you got to move up to Hush Puppies. Then, you got to move up. There was different different places on the what we call the line, the front line there and there was a barbecue spot, there was a steam table spot, and there was a grill spot and so then there was another guy over here, man in the deep fryer, which he's the, that's different than hush puppies. That's for all the deep fried stuff.
So, excuse the detail. When I was learn, when I got into a place where I was getting ready plate food, one of the, the head cook there, he he shared this with me and and something I remember that was good advice. He said, if you'll just fix the plate the way you would like it, you'll satisfy most of the most of your guests. Majority of the people will be satisfied if you'll fix it the way you would like it. And you know, I found that to be true, good advice.
It's it's kind of rooted in a in a biblical principle, isn't it? Do unto others that you would have them do unto you and so, this morning, as maybe a little disclaimer, if you will, this morning, this message is something the lord's been teaching me, something he prepared for me and I'm going to just give it to you like he gave it to me. Kind of the way he prepared it for me. I'm going to I'm going to share it with you. So, let's pray.
As we go to prayer, I'd just ask you to maybe listen to the prayer. See if you can agree. See if you would ask these same same things to the lord as we pray together. Our heavenly father, we we do come before you this morning. We recognize you as an all powerful and an almighty god, one who's holy.
We also recognize your love for us and the fact that you prepared a way for us to be reconciled unto the lord Jesus Christ, reconciled into yourself and yes, you've prepared a place for us for eternity. Father, we we know that one of the purposes to today to to coming together is to encourage one another, to be among brothers and sisters, but to hear from you, to hear from your word, to hear what you have from us, to open ourselves, to to lay ourselves bare before you, to say, holy spirit, reveal things to us, teach us, lead us into all truth. Father, we ask to be edified this morning. We ask to be built up. We ask to be equipped to to be of of benefit in the kingdom.
We also pray, father, that you would draw us closer to you. We want to enjoy what you have for us. We want to be recipients of your love and grace. We want to walk in step with you. We want to have fellowship with you.
4:29 Prayer and opening the word
Some of you have probably remember being part of Uncle Dave meetings, his family meetings as he would come into town. I do recall this would have been back in the nineties when Uncle Dave was here for a week of special meetings. This particular portion that we're getting ready to read was the memory section. So, some of us memorize this back then and it's we're going to begin John chapter three and verse 16. We we read here for god so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life.
For god sent not his son into the world to condemn the world but that the world through him might be saved. Verse 18 and if you'll notice the word condemned in this passage. He that believeth on him is not condemned, but he that believeth not is condemned already because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten son of God. And this is the condemnation that light is coming to the world and men love darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. For everyone that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved or corrected, exposed.
But he that doeth truth, he that does the truth comes to the light that his deeds may be manifest. We have in this little passage here what I'd like to draw our attention to is this concept of light and darkness. We we had this is reality that man left to himself will gravitate toward darkness. We recall the the people of of Noah's day. What what do we read in Genesis?
That the the thoughts and intents that men men and women's heart and thought, they were on evil continually. Light and darkness and we would think it's it's a it's really kind of a bizarre startling thing to thing to think that like if we it was presented before us, if I came up here today and said, hey, here's evil or here's good, it's pretty startling to think that we would gravitate toward the evil. Men love the darkness because their deeds were evil and this morning, I'll I'll I'll suggest a title for this little talk. It's bring it into the light. Bring it into the light.
And so, Just looking at this verse 18 once or or excuse me, verse 19 once again and this is the condemnation that light has come into the world. Men love darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. For everyone that does evil hates the light, neither comes to the light. Our our title this morning is come to the light. It is it's the basis on verse 21.
As we as you bring it to the light, your deeds will be reproved, corrected, exposed. If you do truth, you come to the light. And so, flip over with me just a few pages perhaps in your Bible to John chapter eight. John chapter eight. And here we'll begin reading in verse one.
This is the lord Jesus as he's he's out among the people. In John chapter eight in verse one, we read this, Jesus went up to the Mount Of Olives and this is when he was by himself and probably he's having his morning devo time right here. He's praying to the father but he comes back in verse two and early in the morning, he came again into the temple and all the people came unto him and and he sat down and taught them. Notice who was in the audience. There was the scribes and the Pharisees.
They brought unto him a woman who who had been taken in adultery and when they had set her in the midst, they said unto him, they said to Jesus, master, this woman was taken in adultery in the very act. Now, Moses in the law commands us that we should we should stone her but what do you say? John gives a little commentary here in verse six. He says, they said this, the scribes and the Pharisees, they asked this question, tempting Jesus that they might accuse him but Jesus stooped down and with his finger, he rode on the ground as though he didn't hear what the men were saying and they continued talking and asking him the the same question and he lifted up himself and he said this to the to the those in the audience. He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her and then he stooped down and continued riding on the ground.
And the people that heard it, the people that heard what Jesus said, they begin, they were convicted by their own conscience. Went out one by one beginning at the oldest or the eldest even until the last, Jesus was left alone and the woman standing in the midst. This woman was caught in adultery we don't know all of who were there. Some think that maybe even her her husband was leading the charge coming in, bringing this woman and we know that they were they were riled up. Here, they're they're they're ready.
They think they've got an open shut case ready to stone this woman, ready to cast judgement on this woman and so, there, we we read about what Jesus did. There's three things I'd like to like for us to notice from this. Three three things. One, the first is that every person there Well, they left and we might conclude this, every person there had sin because Jesus said, he that is without sin, let him be the first to cast the first stone and I'm going to I'm going to I'm going to suggest this, is that they were there with the sin, unconfessed sin, undealt with sin. You see, their conscience.
The the scripture tells us that their their conscience convicted them. When Jesus said, he that is without sin, there is something struck in their heart and they said, they realized, oh yeah, I've sinned. I've not dealt with this. Maybe whatever it was, maybe there was other adulterers in the crowd. Maybe there was other ones there that had had had you name it.
Plug it in. But everyone of them left. They were all there ready to judge but had sin on their own that hadn't been dealt with. Here's second thing we'd like to notice. Age.
The age of the people there. It says that beginning from the eldest to the last, everyone of em. It didn't matter about age. The all all everyone there, no matter what age they were, so there was nobody in that particular group that had come to this place of arrival. There were still people that have led their life even at the eldest person there.
The eldest person there who was dealing with unconfessed sin. Third thing that we'll notice, I stop short. Look at verse 10. The third thing I like us to notice is Jesus' reaction. So, we understand that everybody there was dealing with unconfessed sin.
It didn't matter their age and here in verse 10, we read this, what was his reaction when when when Jesus had lifted up himself? He saw none saw none but the woman and he said to her, woman, where are your accusers? Hath no man condemned thee? And she said, no man, lord. And Jesus replied to her and said, neither do I condemn thee.
Go and sin no more. Do you hear that language, that same language of John chapter three? Jesus didn't come into the world to condemn the world. But through him, the world might be saved. He came to offer salvation.
He came to offer freedom. He came to offer release from the bondage of sin. This woman, well, here she was. She was taken in adultery. She obviously, we would we would consider maybe we categorize it this way.
Most of the time, adultery is is done in the dark. It's done in in secret. You're trying to hide it and here is being exposed. It's being brought into the light and yet, there's all these other men, these self righteous ones that are there. They have the same type of sin that needs to be exposed and need to be dealt with.
Bring it to the light. The what was Jesus reaction? It was it was no condemnation. It was forgiveness. It was acceptance.
It was love. This this is this is characteristic of what we see when we bring it to the light. No condemnation. In fact, Paul writing in in Romans says it this way, Romans eight verse one, therefore, there is now or there is therefore no condemnation to them who are in Christ Jesus. Oh, The three things that we realized right here is that everybody there was dealing with unconfessed sin.
It didn't matter your age and the third thing is that there's no condemnation. Jesus' response was, there's no condemnation. Bring it into the light You remember back in the garden, Adam and Eve, well, they had it perfect. They had, they were in paradise. They had this wonderful garden and we're told at at a couple places in scripture that the that god visited them, that he would walk with them in the cool of the day and we can only imagine what kind of a a cool, neat experience this would be as god reveals himself at different times in various points of history.
15:40 Adam and Eve hid themselves in darkness
And when they, this is Adam and Eve and when they heard the the voice of the lord god walking in the garden in the cool of the day. So, you you picture this, Here comes here comes god. Now, this is on the day that they had they had committed that sin. This is on the day they had disobeyed god. Here he comes as he had done before walking in the cool of the day and and he says or or we said, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the lord god among the trees of the garden.
Adam and Eve hid themselves. We could say it this way. They were in the dark. They were in the shadows. They were running from god.
They had unconfessed sin to deal with and you know what their unconfessed sin did? It broke, it damaged, it affected their relationship with god. They had enjoyed... Or not relationships, excuse me, fellowship. Their fellowship with god.
They had enjoyed sweet fellowship, walking in the cool of the day. Here he's ready and they're fleeing from him. They're hiding. They're in the dark. And it takes god pursuing them or god saying, hey, Adam, where are you?
Calling out to them. Trying to bring em back. Bring it to the light. Bring it to the light. So, we'll we'll notice this.
When we when we harbor or when we have this unconfessed sin in our own life, as believers, it affects our fellowship with god. We go squirrel away and hide. We don't enjoy the sweet fellowship like we had before. We're in the darkness. We're loving evil rather than than light.
We're we're choosing to be separated from from this fellowship that we once enjoyed. Bring it to the light. Perhaps, we would do well to remember the fellow by the name of Aiken. He was he was in in the in the army of the Israelite nation under the commandment of of Joshua. As Joshua was leading the people in to the new land, the new promised land.
Now, god had already come to Joshua and said, look, I've delivered the land. I will give you the land. All you have to do is go in and possess it. I will fight on your behalf and with this, he gave some qualifications or guidelines, rules, whatever you want to say. God had a reason and he said, go in and possess the land.
You'll be victorious but I don't want you to take of anything of the land. In times past, he had let him enjoy the spoils of war. This time not. And there was definitely things for them to go in and enjoy like those grapes that are described for us, the grapes of Eshcol, and those other the the land flowing with milk and honey. He, there was all these things for them to enjoy in this land.
But he said, don't take of the Babylonian. Don't take of the enemy's things. Leave that. I'm going to annihilate. I'm going to destroy everything.
And you're going to start fresh in this land. And so we we understand that this fellow, well, he went in and he did. He saw... He he stole, and and as a result, he broke god's instruction. He he he committed a sin and so Achan, what he does...
Well, let's... I'm just going to read read his little testimony during his confession to you. Again, you can just listen to this, just one verse as, as we read about this in in the account. Listen listen to what Aiken said. When I saw the spoils, a goodly Babylonian garment, this this set of clothes, and 200 shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold that was of 50 shekels in weight.
So he sees these things and evidently, there was no one else around or he saw this and he he he figured he could he could get it. And so he decide... Well, he says, I coveted them, then I took them, and behold, they are hid in the earth in the ground in the midst of my tent and the silver under it. What was he doing? He was hiding these things.
They were... It was pretty much in the darkness. Right? I mean, we've got another illustration of of sin, and he's hiding. You see, Aiken, he didn't he didn't confess at any point along until after he was dead on exposed.
They lost a war against the battle of AI. They lost lives in that war. Israelites lost their lives. And and so god reveals to them... God reveals to to Joshua their sin in the camp.
There's opportunity to confess. There's opportunity to bring it into the light but Aiken, he he he knows he's done wrong but he hides it. He tries to hide it. He tries to conceal it. You see, he's not dealing with this And it goes through...
He's from the tribe of of Judah. They go through this process. They finally select the tribe of Judah. Then it goes down to his family, and all of a sudden, right to him, and here he is, Achan, guilty. And he's like, finally admits, I did it.
And then we just read what what he said. We won't spend long time on this, but notice there's a four step process in that verse that we just read. It says, first, he saw. First, he saw. Then, it says that he coveted.
That means he strongly desired. He wanted it. The third thing it says is that he took it and then the fourth is he hid it And so we see this process, we see this process and we we can we we see a similar process as explained in James. And and so, where did it lead? Aiken and his whole family were judged and put to death at that time.
He hid it. He kept it in the dark. And so our our our the the thing we want to think about today is bring it into the light. Bring it into the light. Whatever it is, bring it into the light.
23:34 Proverbs: He that covers sin will not prosper
This is the word of God. Proverbs chapter eight and verse 13. He he says, he that covers his sin shall not prosper, but whosoever confesses and forsakes them, the sin, shall have mercy. Now something that we probably need to do is that we need to we're we're all so entrenched in our American culture that we would when we read a verse like this, we automatically think materialism. We automatically think like, okay, whoever covers his sin will not prosper.
We're thinking prosper in material ways But no, we need to think of it differently. We need to think of it in a spiritual sense. In fact, do this. Go back to the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus reveals God's economy and how that man and God's ways of thinking are totally different.
And here here's what the way we we should think about this. When we cover our sin, we will not prosper spiritually. What does that mean? Well, we saw it we saw it with Adam and Eve. They were not prospering spiritually anymore.
Their fellowship had been broken with god. The fellowship was affected. They're not prospering in their communion with god. The very reason that you and I are created that god would say, I want to create a man. I want to create a woman.
I want to have fellowship with them. I want to have a relationship with them. We're affecting that. He that covers his sin will not prosper. He will not enjoy the things that I prepared for them.
We saw it too with Aiken. He that covers the sin will not prosper. The things that he thought would bring, the things that were enticing to him, the things that god had told him not to deal with, he got em. Oh, yeah. He got those Babylonius threads, right?
He got the new garment but did he get to enjoy it? It's buried in his tent. I don't know about you. I was just thinking about this. I'm like, every time I buried something, it got dirty.
You know, like, and here, these are clothes that I'm supposed to put on. How are you gonna bury it and not let it get ruined? He wasn't enjoying it. The things in the dark, well, they're appealing. In fact, we gravitate toward them.
They bring pleasure for a short time. Sometimes not at all. He that will cover his sin will not prosper spiritually. But if you if you will confess them and forsake them, what's there there for you? Mercy?
A recipient of mercy. A recipient of God's grace. We think about mercy and we're not getting what we deserve. I wonder how it would have been if Adam and Eve when they heard the god's voice in the in the garden, if they would have run to him right then. How what if what what changes would have happened there?
What if he would have run to them? So, god, we're sorry. We have sinned. I took of the fruit. What if they would have run right there and confessed it?
What if Aiken, the very day that the battle had happened, thirty six men die. What if Aiken would have went front and center and said, Joshua, look, I know I I disobeyed god. I took of these garments. I was going to try to hide it but here it is. What if what what what would have played out different?
He that covers his sin will not prosper. He that for confesses and forsaken, well, he's going to be a recipient of mercy. You see that woman that day standing in the midst of those men? She was a recipient of mercy. Woman, where are your accusers?
I don't see any, Lord. Neither do I condemn you. Bring it into the light. That's the that's the thing. We want to bring it into the light.
28:04 Three sins to bring into the light
You release yourself from the power of the bondage. If you confess and forsake, you're released. You're recipient of mercy. If you keep it in the dark, you stay in bondage to what's in the dark. You see, Aiken was in bondage to a piece of garment and to silver and to gold.
He was in bondage by it. He continued to hide it. He continued to think, one day, I'll be able to get it out. He just continued to stay there until his death. Adam and Eve were running.
They were running. All those people there, they had stones in their hand ready to throw. But they had all unconfessed sin in their own life, and they were convicted by it. Bring it into the light. Bring it to the light.
I don't need to name the statistics for you. They're all over. But we do need to deal with the reality that that that this pornography is so accessible. And listen, every one of those people standing there had unconfessed sin to deal with, and it didn't matter the age, The oldest to the youngest. And what does that tell me?
I need to think about the oldest to the youngest in the body of Christ and say, what are you dealing with? Do you need to bring it to the light? And as and as it's brought to the light, you're gonna receive mercy. You're gonna receive love, acceptance, forgiveness, release. Bring it to the light.
Second thing, the second sin I'll mention that if we could self examine. Well, let me tell you this. It's a Christian sin, okay? It's pretty well accepted among Christian culture. It's pride.
Me, myself, and pride. Might say with a little the little saying is me, myself, and I. Well, I is right in the middle, right? I is right in the middle of pride. P R I D E.
Me, myself, and pride. And he's probably think, well, I don't deal with that. That might be a little red flag. If you if you think like you know better than somebody else, if you think I got it all together, if you think that I'm right, it's possible you're dealing with this thing called pride. And listen, here's the thing about pride as we're we're talking about secret sins, hidden sins, things of the darkness.
Pride is something that we're sometimes unaware of because it's kind of one of those things that tend to be in our blind spot. It's hidden because we don't even know it. We don't even realize it. J Vernon McGee, he's he's with the lord now but we... Some of you benefited from his bible teaching.
He used to tell... He told this story one time. I liked it because it's a hunting story and so he was telling about a time where he was hunting in California. I also liked it because it was refreshing to think about. There's actual hunting going out on in California and so, here he is.
He's out squirrel hunting and he's out out in this area in California and there's a storm approaching and he's where he could see the storm approaching. He says, he kinda knew the area where he'd hunted before and he knew about a cave that was near nearby. And so he sought refuge from the store into this cave and he gets up in there in the cave and he's getting back and and the rain, sure enough, the storm's coming and it's raining and he's feeling pretty good about himself that he was smart enough to take take cover from the storm. He's enjoying it. The rain's coming, you know, and he's sitting there a little while and he thought, yeah, I'm going get out my my flashlight and see what's in this cave.
And so, he turns on his light and as he looks around, there's this big spider building a web right there and just lowering down right on... Right right behind his shoulder. And as he looks looks down toward his toward his feet, he sees this centipede thing like crawling, you know. And as he's looking around, the light exposed all these creepy crawlies in the cave. I don't know if there was bats or not in there but you know, you get the picture, right?
What happened? The light exposed it. Now, what at first, he was there and he was feeling fine. He was feeling fine. He got out of the storm and he feeling okay there even in the darkness of the cave But as soon as he shone the light, it revealed these things.
What we need to do is take the light of God's word and shine it on in our own heart. You know what? When we shine that light, one of those things that might maybe will be revealed is pride. Pride. You see, if there's contention, the scripture's clear.
In Proverbs, it tells us that that strife does not exist without pride. That's the key ingredient and so if there's tension or or or argument, there's pride involved. Okay? Pride's a real issue that we need to deal. Will we be willing to bring pride into the light?
That's that's the question. Will we be willing to bring pride into the light? Third sin. Third sin I'll mention for us as a group is bitterness as a result of broken or damaged relationships. Bitterness as a result of broken or damaged relationships.
Now how do we keep this in the dark? We keep this in the dark by kind of something like this. Hi, Libby. How are you doing? You look great today.
I can't believe that she did such and such to me the other day or like that was this false persona. We keep this relationship, this friendly false relationship, but inside we've got this bitterness because there's really a broken relationship between Libby and I. There's something I've never dealt with and I harbor that and I keep it and it turns into bitterness and it does affect my relationship with her and you know what? It needs to be brought into the light. Bitterness as a result of broken or damaged relationships needs to be brought into the light.
It needs to be dealt with. Listen, it's the same formula. He that hides his sin, he that covers his sin will not prosper and if you think your sin is a Christian sin like pride, like I'm okay, well, you're fooling yourself. Satan is a deceiver. Satan is the father of lies.
Satan wants to keep you in the dark. Bring it to the light. If you think that, oh, I'm not bitter but you still got a damaged or broken relationship, you're fooling yourself. Bring it to the light. He that covers his sin, he that denies that he's got a problem with another brother and sister in Christ, he that allows it to be in in in in broken state of of relationship, you're covering your sin and you will not prosper.
You will not prosper spiritually and you see, it doesn't only affect you. Just like Aiken, it didn't only affect him. It affected his family. It affected the whole tribe. It affected the nation of Israel.
Your sin, your covered up sin just doesn't affect you. It affects your family. It affects this body. You see, bring it into the light and you'll receive this. If you will confess and forsake it, you'll receive mercy.
36:06 Ephesians: Walk in the light, reprove darkness
Now, he's going to list some sins here. I've I've I've called three to our attention but this will will will will go through this. The fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not be named once among you as becometh saints. Nor filthiness, nor foolish talking, jesting, which are not convenient, but the rather giving of thanks. For you know that nor whoremonger or any unclean person or covetous man, which is an idolater, they have no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
Let no man deceive you with vain words. For because of these things cometh wrath, the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. Be therefore not partakers with them. For you were sometimes in darkness, but now you are in the light of the Lord. Walk as children of the light.
What are we saying this morning? Bring it into the light. Walk in the light. Notice verse nine, for the fruit of the spirit is in in all goodness and righteousness and truth. Proving what is acceptable unto the lord and have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness.
But rather reprove them. We're hearing that the same, we're hearing the same words of John three again but men love darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. They wouldn't come to the light because that meant their deeds would have to be reproved or exposed. But we're saying come to the light. Come to the light.
If you have and have no fellowship with the unfruitful works, rather reprove them, expose them, bring them to the light, for it is a shame to even speak of those things which are done of them in secret or in the dark. But all things are reproved, corrected, or made manifest by the light. For whosoever does this, make manifest his light. As we wrap up today, I'm going to ask you well, two two questions or one's a question and one's a one's just a piece of advice. Here's the question.
Would you be willing to ask the Lord right now, what do I need to bring into the light? Examine examine yourself. Just ask the Lord. Would you be willing to do that? I mean, you could do that in your seat right now.
Just ask the Lord. Lord, what is it that you want me to bring into the light? Here I am. I would have been one of the people holding the rock. I would have been one of the people ready to judge.
I would have been one of the people there with unconfessed sin in my own heart. What do you want me to bring into the light today? Would you be willing to do that? Then here... Here's the next thing I'd like us to consider.
40:16 Be a right hearer for others
A child might confess to a parent. A friend might confess to another. A brother and sister in Christ might come and confess and hear hear this please. Would you follow Christ's example? And they're bringing something out of darkness into the light to your attention.
Would you say there's no condemnation? Would you offer them mercy? Would you offer them love and acceptance? So that... What's the advice?
Be be the right hearer for your brothers and sisters in Christ. Be the right hearer. Let it come into the light. We're all gonna benefit by this what's hidden coming into the light. But we don't want to create another catastrophe where it's rift and judgment and follow Christ's example.
41:31 Concluding song and prayer
Yeah. I was wondering about search me, oh, God. Do you know that one? You don't know that one? Alright.
What's the number of victory of Jesus in him? Do you know? Is it in our hymn book? We're we're concluding we're concluding this message. But if you be willing to ask God, what do I need to bring in the light?
And would you be willing to be a hearer like the lord Jesus and give that same response? Heavenly father, we we we just put these matters before you. Father, we we pray for, courage to be obedient to the things that you're revealing to us even now, and we ask this in the name of the lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
