Doane Roger Intro to mission trip Q&A — 1 Corinthians 12
2 passages in this message
- 1 Corinthians 12:4-7 the text
- James 1:27
In this message, the speaker reflects on a recent short-term mission trip to Haiti, thanking the congregation for their vital prayer support. While sharing honest impressions about serving in the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, the sermon explores how practical service—specifically construction work—plays an essential role in fulfilling the Great Commission.
The sermon centers on 1 Corinthians 12:4–7, highlighting how the Holy Spirit provides different gifts, ministries, and abilities to work toward God's purposes. Just as Noah used carpentry to carry out God’s call, every believer has unique practical skills that God can use. The congregation is challenged not to overlook their own abilities, but to make themselves available to serve wherever God directs them.
The speaker also draws from James 1:27, emphasizing the biblical call to care for the vulnerable through their partnership with Children of Promise International. By sharing firsthand experiences and pictures of their time serving orphans and local communities, the sermon encourages the church to step out in faith and discover their own unique place in God's work.
Outline and transcript
0:00 Good morning, everybody. Good morning.
Good morning, everybody. Good morning. I'm gonna make some remarks, and then we're gonna show some pictures, and then we'll have some more time for questions from you. If you see some some of those pictures that prompt some questions on your part, just note them, and you can... You'll be able to ask them later.
But first, I want to express our tremendous appreciation for your prayers for us. We could not have done it without it, and we are so appreciative for them. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, and it's a place I never wanted to go. I think the only other place I think of offhand that I'd never want to go is Ethiopia, and Josh and Christa spent several weeks at Ethiopia a year ago. But the Lord has a way of getting you to places you don't want to go, so don't come up with too many places you don't want to go.
A former president of Haiti said, and and Haiti receives twice as much per capita charity as any other nation. He said, charity has never helped any country escape underdevelopment, and underdevelopment is rampant there in Haiti. And I was encouraged. I didn't even know I had it with me, but I had a World Magazine with me, and one of their lead stories was on Haiti. I had it with us all week and didn't even read it, but I read that.
I saw article last night, and there's an organization called Hope International that's active in Haiti to help them to manage their resources and to develop, to address that underdevelopment situation. So I was encouraged by that. There's lots of work, lots of good things going on in Haiti. So mission trip. One of the questions I had, does construction count as a mission trip?
1:54 A trick to get some of us to go
So, I guess construction is... Goes hand in glove with mission trips. But one Corinthians twelve:four-seven, Now there are varieties of gifts but the same Spirit and there are varieties of ministries and the same Lord and there are varieties of effects but the same God who works all things in all persons. We see here that there's different ways to accomplish the Great Commission. And I was encouraged to see that the Trinity is involved here.
Verse four, the same Spirit. Verse five, the same Lord. Verse six, the same God who works all things in all persons. And we saw God at work, the Trinity at work among us there in our in our week of service. But before we leave First Corinthians 12, I want to challenge each of you to think of what unique role you might have in in the Great Commission.
3:15 The team that came together
So don't diminish that and be willing to be available. Before we go to the pictures, I'd like to read a verse in James chapter one. This is a good reason in itself to to go serve in a needy area where there's children involved, especially especially orphans. This is pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and father to visit orphans, to visit orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself unstained from the world, to visit orphans in their distress. And I can say that it appears that those orphans there were well cared for.
They certainly were... Seemed to be content. I forgot what else I was gonna say. We'll go right to the pictures, and then afterwards, we'll have some more discussion. And, we'll bring the team up here, and I'll serve as a moderator to maybe put some questions to them so that you can learn more about us.
4:45 The whole reason for going
Transcribed by machine from the recording, so it has the odd mistake in it. Any timestamp plays from that point.
